1.
Same here, I`ve found that to get a sound that works well in my covers band, I have to choose a middy/clanky sound that I don`t like. But it works really well in the mix.
Well, of course, sounds get diluted when everyone is playing full-on, but I think you can help that with a band mix as opposed to the bass being the one who has to make the room for everyone else. I don't find I ever have to use a sound I wouldn't want to use in order for it all to sit right and the more instruments you have to contend with the trickier this might seem to be..but I don't play in units of less than 5 with full keys and possibly horns and I can always hear myself very clearly It is a bad room indeed for that not to be the case...IMO.
2.
At the time I wrote that there was a nasty red "-2" below the post. As I said before It's a "net" 2, there could have been 5 positives and 7 negatives at that time for all I know. Now it's sitting at +4 and I'm of the opinion that people are just clicking the positive arrow in sympathy or trying to show that they disagree with the negatives. Is that post really worth a net +4? Sorry to the OP but it's the sort of doom prophecy thread that's been said countless times before which I would not normally have participated in, but I felt that the -2 when I saw it was deeply unwarranted and felt compelled to speak out against this nonsense. And yes, speak out instead of meaningless clicking of arrows.
Ok.. understand your point now. I've said many times before..really disagree with anonymous ratings, myself. I can honestly say..even with a few trucks with a few..err.. posters, I have never neg'd them. I would negate their views in a post if I felt that strongly about it... not tick boxes. The other thing to learn here is that some things aren't that important, so go and play golf or something, rather than sit here all day arguing about not much of a hill of beans..!!
3.
For the record I can't remember who any of the people I routinely disagreed with were. There were a lot of them, but usually it was just one or two doing the arguing and the rest sporadically putting the boot in without contributing anything to the argument. I don't think they got any warnings. But like I said I honestly can't remember who any of them were - even the ones who actually had something to say. And for the record I didn't have a personal problem with any of those opinionated, argumentative people, but the mobs that would form around them I imagined were probably a set of utter pricks.
Not quite the language I would use..but I kind of broadly agree if you get set up against the growing herd. Now, of course, you can give snidey little minus points without having to offer an opinion or argument. Never been one for cliques..if you are friends with someone, you are friends, but when a herd becomes too strong and determined to forge a path or agenda..it is time to leave them to it.
4.
Well, at time of writing there's a net two users who would rather click on a down arrow than have a conversation with you. Negative rep for expressing an opinion which is neither objectionable or anti-social. Way to go, whoever you are.
I think this is true..which is one reason what I wouldn't want it. but..how do you know there are two users doing that..??? As for the OP... it can be a struggle to get active in more than a few threads...and I am not sure you can say why that is. Time of year, general apathy, head down at work..?? all sorts.. I still check in but it is easier to walk away and do something else now.
5.
Warwick red label.
Good to know but not tried them. DR and Newtone are others.
6. This thing is that you need to keep the meths as clean as poss so a simple decent size plastic container and lid is enough, IMO. If the silks get wet...they'll fray which is one reason I was interested in brands without winds..!!
7.
In my experience it's not Fenders any more than any other manufacturer that you're likely to find in a shop. They are never set up how I would want them.................
I went into Gtrgtr the other day..and I swear I couldn't find one decent bass set up well...IMO. That was for starters...
8. As above..it lasts and it functions. It was very big in the 80's for that reason. It will still do a job but there is so much more choice and far better gear today..IMO.
9. Of course, it might be down to the sound you then end up getting. Was watching a recent Sky Arts couple of shows...with Gary Moore and then Thin Lizzy. Lynott had one of the most atrocious sounds from a pick...truely appalling... and that might have been reason why some changed from pick in the first place.. Not saying it need be the case nowadays but getting a sound was the reason I changed eons ago. Would I want to re-EQ the bass for a song or two in a set nowadays... ???
10. yep...deffo band defining moment there... :lol;
11. ha ha ...don't know what to say.. Precious, childish, break-down, whatever........ No point trying to play-on..........just have to admit the game is up and pack down and have a laugh with the audience over it..??
12. Seems like a popularity contest to me... and I doubt that will be what it is intended for and will be discredited. I have seen forums split the camp like this before and then the whole thing that made it a general community ended up as a very small active content.. You might still attract new members so you can appeal to advertisers .................................... You'll get self serving cliques or groups and a herd mentality which might even hunt in packs to promote their own end or products. This needn't be premeditated but that wont stop it. .........which will promote a backlash from a few who then will go off and find another forum and you'll lose good members and be left with a jolly little club... It will be no good thinking...this forum is different because of the people who are here..they all think that. The single most valuable resource here is people and their opnions/experience...diverse as they may be, as that encourages new members. If you lose that..you could become a club and end up like the MM forum
13. LEDs on basses are a good idea...UNTIL you have to power them. You'll go through a lot of batteries unless the bass is powered. I don't normally run them unless the gig demands it, which is rare...so on balance I would say LED's on a bass is a waste of money, IMO.

PA equipment

Find the singer/frontman first as he may well have his own stuff.... As for decent stuff and bang for buck.. I am assuming you just want tops and the power/EQ section. PV is decent enough and cheap... but depends how discerning you are with Vox and I'd avoid if poss. But probably best budget stuff around...and is very durable JBL isn't what it used to be and the horn units have been fragile, IMRE... what a let-down and come down from a great height..!! Mackie gets good reviews and is decent enough. If the band has a degree of stability and you think ti will last..look into e-bay for HK and Martin stuff and down a level, EV. Way better starting points and your vocals will thank you for it.
15. I just lay mine in round coils in a decent sized container. Don't soak for too long and I don't straighten the winds...as this might weaken the string at that point. As long as the strings go on the same bass as they came of off...you can get upwards of 5 'cleans' per set if you are careful. Meths will go off after a time as well...so once it starts collecting stuff like dirt and grime etc ...get new Meths.
16. Not sure on the criteria you have decided on for your choices,...but I'd try and get the examples you want in the same room and play them all...and decided from there. None of them are basses you should be buying without demo...and I'd say that about many other basses as well. see and play the specific bass that you want... Too many potential nasty surpises otherwise...!! IMO.
17. Have just txt my mate about them.
18. [sub]£250 the pair or each..?[/sub]
19.
As opposed to....? If it was an originals band would the answers and suggestions be different? If so, why?
No..not unless it was a career.
20. 2mtrs max in lenght, 1.5mtr is ideal. You using speakons..??? and does your amp have 2 speakon outs..or do you have to daisy chain through the cabs..?? Not sure if the cabs have 2 speakons to allow for this so you might have to go 1 spk-spk and 1 jack-spk The two spk outs on the Amp head would solve this admirably so you could go with 2 spk cables for the cabs if that allowed it..
21. Whose P.A was it...? why do they not have any DI boxes supplied..? And if they don't, why are you using them? This stuff is normally covered by the tech rider, IMO.. All the gigs I have done recently, the Bass was externally DI'd so this is obviously an area that the engr wants control off. My DI's on the amp are post and pre...with output levels on both...but even that might not satisfy the engr who will use his own..in 90% of cases.
22. Far from trying to negate cliques..I think it could be a tool to promote them. Either someone is willing to stand by their posts and POV or not... and if they aren't then they should leave the thread..not read and possibly postr neg marks without contributing anything at all. As for OT... again, you will be cutting down on the number of threads to get involved in...and again, not good, IMO. If you don't like a thread or the way it is going you can then use that 'type nothing' facility
23. yes..bin it whilst I am still in credit.
24.
I'm quite surprised that the built-in DI is post-EQ only. So, yes. If you like the amp, just buy a separate DI, they're not that expensive.
Me too...this is a basic function, IMO. I have this covered on my amps but also have a ToneHammer as a DI pre, if my amp fails
25. It's only a covers band... and it's only banter. At the end of the day, no one is getting fired over it... but if you cut threads short like that...we'd have even less threads to contribute to.. That is why I wouldn't have taken the suggestion itself seriously and we would have all moved on The thread did high-light quite a few attitudes though.
