1. Yes, maybe it is not unknown elsewhere but I never buy off spec only myself... if I find something I like the look of, that is the easy part. The next part is getting there to see it. I am not sure I'd call myself ultra picky but I need to see and play the thing otherwise it just isn't a goer. I might buy second hand on a punt if I could knock the thing on for the same money but the only time I did that was with a Sei J5 and QC is not going to be much of the problem there, for sure... you still have to like the little idiosyncranacities any kit may have so even that is not a sure thing. I certainly would never buy a mainstream production model from a catolgue and this type of episode really reaffirms the sense in this, IMO. I hope Gareth gets this sorted to his satisfaction asap.
2.
Sorted for £500 34" 45mm nut 18.5mm string space at Bridge and 18mm depth front back at first fret 22mm at 12th mucho fast
Just from these pics, I'd say this has to be a lot of bass for £500...
3. I can see some good guys and some maybe not so good guys in this... not sure how far the trust still goes, but it appears a few things may go on behind the scenes that you would have to really be on your toes to check..and that just should not have to be the case in buying this type of bass from this type of maker. It sounds to me like you have a chance of getting a bitza which is outrageous and I am surprised that EB don't go mad over this. For a start, their QC rep has been dragged through the mud online which is difficult and time consuming to repair...and I just don't know why they would stand for it... I'd expect distributor deals to be lost over this... but maybe that is me being naive..??? or..?? I am sure MM can make good basses and I have owned one..which I regard as the best bass I've had outside my current stable but there is no way I would be accepting any more offerings. Gareth will make up his own mind and knows the QC he expects but I'd go with the consensus here and get the money back and also take a step back.. The only thing that will concentrate minds is when they start losing business over this sort of crap. From my POV..where is the trust in all this..?? it might not be stretching it to imply the OP has been taken for a mug-punter..albeit, G was onto it and didn't fall for it...but any company that condones this sort of practise wouldn't be getting my money any time pretty soon
4. Narrow thing neck to me might mean two things.. Narrow refers to spacing so a jazz type neck would take care of that. Depends what spacing you want to compliment this at the bridge. As necks are so personal, I'd get one custome made..probably by Sims if I only needed the neck and already had the body sorted.
5. I have loads ready to clean up should I run out of new sets, but some of the older strings..and some of the newer ones..which it my peeve atm.. are useless.
6. fugly..the pair of them, but the early Wal looks a nice deal.
7. I use a Korg and it is ok... I think my hand held is better though through the same basses as it holds the pitch better and more still. I have another amp to rack up so I'll go the same way again, 3u lightweight case and wired in tuner. Racks can be too deep though so a lot of carry space required....
8. You can keep the lot of them, I wouldn't soil my hands with some. Seriously, you'd put some straight back in the rack as soon as you looked at them. And as for the sounds they make ha ha ha !!!
9. I owned one..decent for the time... will probably will still be decent today if looked after. I'd much rather pay the pennies for one of these that a lot of the cack around now for the same price
10. When I talked to Malcolm about custom sets, he said they could do anything and since both my basses are the same config-wise, I asked for the winds over the bridge to be a bare taper core on all strings. I would imagine he wouldn't be adverse to accomodating that sort of taper..not to the core, of course, for the bigger strings, up at the pegs. Build was 3-4 weeks which was fine with a bit of forward thinking and it sounds like they are busy...which is great. I honestly do think these are my new DR handmade strings versions and they are made in the U.K. Upto now, I can't fault them and with a bit of care..as you would with any strings, I hope.. they are lasting very well. I'm a convert.
11. Don't think it matters, IMO, as the single 12" boxes x 2 I have do very well down low. I'd not want anymore and I run either amp flat on the dials. 2x210's also have great low end so as long as what you have comes up with the goods, I tend to dismiss theorical or pratical ponderings as it doesn't apply to me. I'd be interested initially in the AE112/DB112's or AE212 in terms of carry. The sound needs to work of course, that is a given. I am not sure about the handle/handles position on this new HD112, but my leanings of Ceramic over NEO makes it worth a look. As a general POV, I'd say the 12's sit well but project less well than the 10's.
12. Quieter acoustically or amped up, or both..?
13. Promoting any band is a real slog and you need something to set you apart. Bands are two a penny and there is only so many times you can hassle your mates to turn up. Sooner or later, you'll have to have a compelling reason why people will come out and support you. Had a very good laugh recently when a local band wrote up their own press review... it was truly stuff of delusion..but the point is, they have to go and deliver against that...and that is where it all becomes obvious. Mates will only trawl round the pay to plays a few times.
14. I agree... I always say a single 12" is crap by comparison to two.
15. to answer part 2...yep, they are, so any use of wood is a waste IMO..
16.
Come on people. Start selling your AE212's!!
Indeed I'd go for either AE112 or AE212...but the HD12 is also tempting. hmmmm
17.
I wouldn't do it, personally. But, I'm sure it can handle a fair whack.
Neither would I... This is always the problem when people take little rigs with P.A support. I'd be asking what the monitor mix is ..and if I wasn't satisfied the bass would go through them..and therefore help out your rig, I would want an alternative set-up. You may well end up making do on the night which may well spoil the whole gig. I always take my bigger rig for this type of thing knowing I can push the 550w amp to around 7 on the dial and I know from experience that is loud enough for the drums..no point is going any further and blowing a mix. If you don't know... go on the side of caution. Also..because the rig probably isn't man enough for the gig...there is no way I'd let anyone else get anywhere near to pushing something I would be wary of myself. If you don't know the stage set-up... you need a rig you KNOW will do what you want it to do... as things always get pushed a tad more than you might want...or can hear.
18. I think the handle is wrong on the HD112... might work if only the one side though.
19. hmmm now that is interesting.. You say the HD212 is heavier than the DB212..?? My DB210's are 61lbs...which is heavy enough. HD112 at £550...hmmm..!! in a better way
20. hmmmm..not for me. Not sure about the low frequencies being a factor off axis, myself, but don't want to go off on that tangent. I like the look of them....and I can see my using AE or HD altho the latter might have to wait until we see U.K prices. I think £600-ish for a single 12" was a bit stupid myself esp as I don't see these as a one cab solution at all...but that applies to any 12" cab, IMV.
21.
11 pages lol. Well, the conclusion may well be an upgrade to a Classic Ray.
If this comes off, then I would settle for that. Not sure what the price diff is but best let this resolve itself between you and the other parties, maybe..?? I hope you get a good result out of it.
22. I am glad he has followed the AE type styling. The HD212 would be too heavy for me but I would be in the market for a harder edge type 12.
23.
If the band pays, and you need the money, don't leave unless it's going to drive you mental.
This... but only if money is the defintive factor, not part of it. Otherwise, get out quick. It isn't working, never seemed likely to and is never getting better. What do you need to stay for...? If you spend the hours watching new bands that you spent on this old band, you could quickly find an new scene locally. Get out there and make friends... and talk amongst all the local muso's..you'll be surprised how many aren't doing anything...and you'll need to sort this wheat from the chaff as well, but make new contacts and don't be beholden to mates who waste your time musically..or anyone else either. NETWORK.............
24.
Not sure which is worse, the bass or the carpet.
PMSL You could throw up on that and not notice
25. We don't..and unless you have multiple members in and out of the account, there is no point..and that can be fraught anyway. We have one person doing the accounting for a particular transaction and then take it out of gig money. If the sum is large, one person will pay it, and the band owes that person, so we set aside gig income against it.
