Rehearsal - hours in, and how to encourage other band members
JTUK replied to Gust0o's topic in General Discussion
My own view is that it is pointless perseversing with something that is too much hard work. Getting the band good is hard enough without the fundementals just happening. I think you could back yourself and go and work with other players and keep this ticking over to see who drops off even more. Getting out of the house and out of your own little playing circle is the hardest but most essential thing you should do. How many times do you read band woes here...?? and why, because the options are limited..!! The more people you know, the more people you can call on to get the right member..plus if you are in this circle, more people are actively doing stuff, and more opportunities crop up. If you work within a county, then your name or goal should be getting around something like half of it. That means you know guys in the next town who know of how to call you.. they see you out and about and therefore know what you kind of do... But if this is a bit daunting as of now..the least you should be doing in getting into a circle in your own town..and then build it from there. This takes time so start straight away.... but it is a numbers game. I think you know who is playing about ..get them to know you and then build. In your book should be a mimimum of 10 gtrs... and some of them will not be suitable at all for waht you are doing, but if they know 10 plus ...you get referred and onto a whole bunch of gtrs who will also know other players. You should have you playing togther so when you get a chance to play... you should make an impression. Network, network, network ..!! it is more important that your skill-set as some will be way above you and some way below... but you'll work through that quick enough, by being good at other things...transport, decent gear, good attitude, cool dude, etc etc -

If it is not working, then wind it up. -
What is the best way to turn someone down? (in a band setting)
You just have to balance up how much you need their talent against how much you don't want to be in their company.
This..pretty much. Do you want to know how it will work..?? if you think you already know..just say thanks, but no thanks, it isn't going to work. Nothing more to explain, really If you are feeling benevolent, then get him along, check him out and then say thanks, but..???? I never get this friend thing in bands..... it is the worst idea to be in bands just because you are friends.. as long as you don't hate them, that is enough. -
............. I'd guess that most pub bands operate in a "buyers market" - which means they're at the beck and call of the buyers, those being pub landlords, like it or not.
Only decent ones....landlords that is. If I make an enquiry about a new venue to us, I always think I should go along and see the lie of the land. I will also talk to other bands about their experiences there but these don't always relate. Sometimes, you just know it is not going to work on the phone and putting bands in Duo pubs is one of them and not for us. Having said that..a good landlord is worth making a few compromises for..and at the end of the day a good vibe at the venue gets past a lot of obstacles, but for some places it isn't worth it. If you approach any gig with a negative position, why are you doing it...?? so we don't. Desperation to play gigs doesn't make you popular though, it just satifies the individuals need to get out and play...which again, is not the point, IMO.

We wouldn't walk out if already there and half way through a set.. no point in throwing away what you have half earned, but we regularly review if a place is the sort we want to play, and if we didn't like the landlord/booker/owner/clientelle etc , we wouldn't do it again. In one town around here, we have blown out 3 pubs...( just need to fulfil a last date there in Dec) as not the sort of places that we want to play so therefore down to just the one. Sometimes, it is better for us to stick to a one main venue per town anyway.

TC RH450 ... & which 12 or 2x12 cab (othe than TC cabs)
JTUK replied to Tradfusion's topic in Amps and Cabs
Hm - we tried an RH450 with dave.c's Aguilar GS1x12s at Dusty's Essex bash and it was decidedly underwhelming. It sounded much better with TC cabs, and the Aguilars were much happier with Dave's Hartke LM1000.
I don't suggest GS for this amp...only the DB series. -
There are plenty of places we will not play as the venue doesn't suit us... We wont be cramped in...or paid below our rate, or if it is a nuckle-head pub etc etc .. We have enough dates in the diary to make this choice... Volume-wise we are powerful but there are plenty louder around here...not saying that is a good thing or a bad thing but dragging round a 3k rig and then you can't hear the drums is a bit silly/stupid/clueless because the bass is too loud. oh well...

TC RH450 ... & which 12 or 2x12 cab (othe than TC cabs)
JTUK replied to Tradfusion's topic in Amps and Cabs
I'd be looking at TC cabs, I'm afraid, as I think the amps are mapped to the cabs...or something that had a mid bias as opposed to scoop. So Aguilar DB series, 10" or 12"...pref the former. AE112 or AE210 The AE212 is slim as well so that is worth looking at. Mind you, with the NEO issue, you might have to keep track of discontinued lines -
We did a wedding a couple of years ago, somewhere up north IIR. It was in a small marquee at the back of a pub. At first the landlord seemed like a nice bloke, a bit of a wide boy but friendly enough. He did get the staff to ask us to turn down a couple of times during the first set and we tried. We turned our sub off, took all instruments out of the small PA and did turn down. We really weren't that loud though, and you could here people talking at the back of the marque during intro etc. In to the second he stormed over and pulled down every fader on our desk, mid song, and in front of the wedding party who were in full swing. He started to have a go at us and when we argued that we were there to entertain the guests and couldn't go any lower he told us to do it or pack up and go home. He said, in a loud voice, its my pub, i dont care about anything else, you do as i say. The wedding party were very apologetic, but we didnt make a fuss as it was their day but what a ass hole this guy was.
hmmm so the landlord was quite happy to take the money for the wedding plus a good few £££'s in sales, and then tries to ruin the wedding ... NICE one..!!

Probably just there for stage set-up and a few prompts.

FWIW, my feeling is that Eden were a serious rival to SWR when they first came out..and both followed the over specced build. The old SWR's are superbly made inside..and I'd expect the Eden to be the same. When that company philosophy changed I am not sure..for SWR, it was pre Fender. My 1990 SM amp has not missed a beat apart being knocked off stage under power..which is why I know it is well made as the tech confirmed it under repair. It runs unbelieveably hot and was indeed designed to ...so I would put more store in the early editions, myself. Once both companies decided to run budget lines, that was the end of the company ethos, IMO.
-
The venue either suits you or it doesn't so you have choice to play or not. I tend to watch the 1st set and see how people are having to communicate and that dictates how loud we should be. Bands are now taking in tops and subs which wouldn't be the end of the world if they use'd it better, and I am against subs as my bass doesn't benefit in small places anyway.

There are some gigs that are more than just the bass and drums making the groove. If the drums are out, then the bass might have to move, and so will everything on top of that which is why you can't throw these things togther. If the drums miss it..and that is not so much the guy not playing well...he just didn't play the exact nuance required and it doesn't work..at best, and it is a right mess at worse. This is why SD themselves rotated the sessions...and you wouldn't say that they did this because some guy couldn't play... they just did it to make the track work. So, not a case of someone thinking they can play a groove and a few licks..at all, IMO.

I have to find a dep for this sat, and I know the player well and he will do fine, but some sets are ok to dep and some aren't. Pete's gig is not deppable, IMO... unless you have a great pad put together. This is something I have been meaning to do but it is not ready yet so I sent a live CD out to the dep and got the response...'blimey, I'll have a listen and do my best... ' and he isn't used to playing anything this side of the 80's.... opppss..!!! Now, playwise, he is great, but this is just going to be a real roasting for him..!!! and we aren't paying him much more than he would get for a pick-up band date..!!

There are deps and deps and this is why you really always want to know what you are in for. Recommendations are all very well, but unless you know the person who recommends them, playing-wise, that can be fraught and hit and miss..which you really don't want to do if it is your gig...you really don't want that on a gig you are depping into either so we generally use people who are in that 'swim' of things. In your case, you weren't in much of a position and had the choice to go blind.... or delay the start for however long... and I'd probably have done the same unless you had a deffo ETA of your guy. Tricky one....

Complete loss of use of plucking hand - eek!!
Keep an eye on it. If it continues SEE THE DOC .
THIS.. -
Like these tracks, King of the world is the type of thing they do best..and most things they do are great, IMO. Tom Barney made his name as a MM sub, IIRC, and he steps out from that here. I saw him live with Ricky Lawson when SD were last time over here..

Subject to you playing one and liking it..I think Eden used to be quality gear Like oftens happens, small cutting edge company sells out to Large corp and the product line and ethos is overtaken by an accountants vision and therefore not quite the marque it was..but you may be able to say the same about Boogie...and others, of course. SH, I think it is probably decent bang for buck. People like new things and maybe the lighter-weight thing is a factor.
-
hmmm... never been much of a fan of any of their amps tone-wise but have you tried it with another cab supplementing the 210. Maybe you are having to drive it hard to get volume in some situations and I don't think they do this very well..and EQ becomes super-critical.
Are Bb players lazy? Are many guitar and bass players lazy for often playing in E and A(usually minor),or whatever they tune their open strings too? It's no big deal to play in different keys-especially as a bass/guitar player.Sometimes the horns have to play in uncomfortable keys and sometime the guys in concert have to,it's just the way it is. If it is a big deal,it means you need to spend some time learning new keys.
Yep..it is not like a gtr to want to change into horn keys....
Better suited such as skez
This one..????? http://basschat.co.u...x-212-cover-fs/ Take your point about 10" over everyting else though, but this could work as a one can set-up. I use 2x112 of 2x210... and take either as per the stage. If you want lighter, then that rather says get rid of the TE. Or.... keep the TE rig that justifies the carry, so bigger gigs, and just get the 210/310 to do everything else.
-
If lightweight is the pre-requisit, then maybe you have 3 decent choices. I would have put the GS212 in the mix, but that is quite heavy, albeit on casters plus you are still thinking of touting the TE cab which must be a beast..!! On the face of it, I'd go UL310 IF modular..... or else Markbass for power AND weight

How much is this bass worth? Aka: Is it worth repairing/replacing parts?
JTUK replied to gapiro's topic in Bass Guitars
It is all down to the core elements. I don't think you can make a silk purse out of a sow's ear, myself... but if you could find some pegs for not much pennies and then get use out of it, it will be worth the exercise. Whether it is worth the trouble, who knows and only you can say. If it were me, I'd give it away...which is what the seller presumably did. -
I would fancy the UL310 the most but wouldn't want to be running it with the TE1518 myself so with that in mind would go for the highest power tried cab and go for a one cab solution.. FWIW, I would think you might get other choices here for the £400.... and maybe better suited..???
