1.
A high quality driver OTOH will have a very rigid yet lighweight cone that will exhibit lower smoother break up at high frequencies thus giving cleaner mids and more extended highs we previously associated with 10s. Being bareface compact owners we know all too well that a good modern 15 driver can compete with 10s for mid/highs.
hmmm.... really..?? is that why everyone seems to need to pair it with a 12 on top...as they either can't hear enough or they need a top end. Not such a one cab solution if the head count round here seems to pair up these cabs.
2. hmmm... 2 300watt amps into 8ohms gives you 300watts. If you can unplug one amp and link the cab.. therefore using it as an extn cab, you'll get closer to 500watts into 4ohms. Why would you want the two combos...the extn cab on its own would be the cheaper lighter better option, IMO. The only reason why you would want a two channel amp is if you were to bi-amp...and this is a zillion miles away from that anyway.
3. I think he is ok...those Wooten video's were good fun for a short while. He isn't a Lars Ulrich though, just not really my thing.
4.
I wouldn't pay £27 to see anybody.
Local but name line-ups round here charge from £15-22 for gigs, so I wouldn't say the MM gig was exhorbitant.. You pay your money and take your choice. No big deal. Get your back sorted... so you can go do great gigs and not wince too often..!! I know the number of a great russian lady whose sorts all that sort of thing..............
5. I use them and very happy with them... They weren't as quick as I didn't have a standard template for the cabs but they were thorough and efficient and good to do busniess with...only taking about a week or so, if that, and that was to double check some measurements. Recommend them in an instant.
6. No one is sticking to the line that a price tag makes things better, surely, but you should get to know what is justified and what isn't as far as you are concerned. I considered what I have paid for my stuff to be worth it...and I KNOW it suits me. Expecting to walk into a shop or buy a name on spec and then to be totally sorted smacks of stupidity to me and to be very risky indeed.
7. We had a meet and said optimum gigs per month were about 3. Sometimes we go well past that and so these little things creap in. If you are gigging a lot them you don't need rehearsals so much until you want to change the set... and then we get 4-5 on notice and crash them through once and then decide whether to gig them. You have to have the homelife, work and social and then gigs balanced between all...but if you are that far apart in your thinking, then someone has to move. £200 is a starter fee round here and some pubs can't/wont go beyond it. Top rate is £300..AFAIK, but no one is drawing those sorts of figures, IMO, even though one or two bands might get it, that just puts the pressure on the other bands gigging. It becomes like poker but it is pointless killing the goose.
8. Be on the look out for another one..and then dep the gig out on one of his blanket bookings. Every band has these little hiccups every now and then.
9.
I feel your totally missing the point. Motown was a company that was churning out song after song for the general public, the broke down barriers between races, making black music desirable to white people. They were a hit making machine. The whole motown thing was more than just the songs and changed culture for good. At The Gates are a Sweedish death metal band that have 4 studio albums and no hit songs. People aren't missing out because there is nothing to miss out on. Fair enough its all your opinion and your entitled to have it, but it has no grounds to stand on as an argument front. Not every bass player wants to be a session player.....some do it just to enjoy playing the music they enjoy.
Ok..not a session... but if someone said play this song with this sort of feel, it might help to know what they are vaguely talking about. I doubt many here lived through classic motown times and were exposed to that sort of stuff in real time... but by the time you start playing with others, you'll get it. One of my first auditions was all about 60's soul..they were all older...so if I didn't know it then..I knew about it thereafter. I don't say you have to like it, but I think it helps in countless situations to be aware that there is more to your own genre/favourute stuff. As I said..building blocks... and you are dismissing so many gigs if your tastes/influences are so insular.. but there you go.
10.
Thing is it's a kind of music that my parents used to turn off on the radio because they weren't fans either, and I've never had the desire to listen to that sort of music myself, and as a result I've never heard much of it. I think we can all think of a list of bands and bass players that other people should be aware of, but I bet you it's different for everyone. I don't feel I'm missing out not being aware of much of what these two did, just as plenty of people don't feel they're missing out by not being aware of what At The Gates did. I would say that I know I am fairly bad at listening to music outside my comfort zone, and would never really sit through something because it would make me 'musically more rounded,' I'd just sit there thinking how much it sucked all the while.
ok.... but on a session or something..someone says this needs a stax/motown type feel...? There is a host of work within genres and styles that transends time... it is all building blocks, IMV.
11. I would have thought that anyone with an ear for music who has to play a lot could pick out Aretha and Springfield, for sure...and Gaga as well. I think Gaga is a huge step on from say, Madonna but she is now beginning to go round in circles. Still, she has her fan-base and they'll buy anything from here until they get bored. I think both Gaga and Madonna were marketing marvels but musically ..er.. well, Madonna was sh*te and couldn't even sing. At least Gaga can hold a tune with a catchy riff. Aretha and Springfield were amongst the best of their era and still hold up today. I don't see how you can not be aware of their work....and it isn't so much a generational thing..it is a music thing. Some things you just have to be aware of, IMO..!!
12. I've got good gear to do what I want it to do. I play live so I need stuff that works well. Do my basses make me a better player..?? yes..that is why I bought them. Could I make a cheap bass work as well...?? not sure, when I consider all things.
13. Had to do it more times that I'd like. Now it is all part of managing the back and keeping the posture so these things crop up less frequently. I am more careful now but don't avoid working the back and am not especially light with my gear. I'll lift most things..CAREFULLY.. that is a easy one man lift of about 70lbs.
14. Since I don't like 15"'s I'd add a 210 Don't see the point of adding a 4x10 at all as 115 + 210 should give you 600 plus watts potential depending on the cabs which is enough for an Ashdown MAG. If you must add a 115, then you should be getting 600watts again from the pr.
15. Know the player and the circumstances... I have a few dates with support acts and it makes sense to have a clear stage etc... and I kind of put my rig forward....but I do want to speak to the guys first. If I am in the same position and a rig is offered, I always ring the guy first and talk it through..and mostly I have declined what is being offered, but that is my choice and another story. If I was doing someone a favour, or vice-versa, it is only right to have a chat about it. I'd be put-out if any old herbert turned up and expected to plug in just as a matter of course. In your shoes, the very least is the borrower should be told to call you and have the chat..!! What is it with rockabilly bands...????
16. We have a couple of agents contacts..can't say they do anything for us, but I've had to turn them off as the Spam is stupid. There is being supportive of the scene and then there is accumulating 5000 'friends' and spamming them which seems a complete waste of time and admin to me. And I also agree, that whilst informing people of an event is ok...you can be a right PITA to friends that you never really see anymore, if all you ever do is invite them. There is a fine line between people being interested in your next gig and you making sure they are going to know all about it. If you are a covers band...you'll turn people off quick enough just by not being able to rotate your set enough without wearing out their patience as well. It is a useful tool, but as someone said above.... you can have a false enthusiasm as dealing in the virtual doesn't make those people turn out. Its an add-on not a substitute, IMO.
17. I am always surprised how many people never get out there. Glad it went well...onto the next one
18.
Not too worried about having to do so, and yes, as a band we have just been told no jeans, trainers or t-shirts, it was the no socks think that struck me as totally pompous and archaic Club Captain - didn't know golf (outside Ryder Cup) was a team game
Some clubs would lighten up touch for a social do with 'guests'..apparently this club doesn't. Hope it works out.
19.
Too flouncy for its purpose, mate. Like a velvet kitchen, a flock toilet.
and you suggested mint..?????
20.
TBH after looking through this thread it seems to me that no matter what colour the plate (except tort) CAR looks f***ing awesome.
Got to be white pearl/cream though... has to be IMO I now have new colour scheme for a build.... CAR with white pearl/cream, RW block and bound.
21. hmmm can I interest myself in an NV412...? no horn though..??? nice dims..!!
22.
I get "Facebooked" to death with gig/event notifications to things I'll never go to from people I hardly know.
This is quite true... which is why I only event onto my wall and also the Band FB wall. It becomes a complete pain to others otherwise and you get FB'd by people you have never met.. Maybe that is why we are crap at it...but it seems so lame to me Our Website and FB is upto date, and people can come if they bother to check out what we are doing. There is no substitute for putting the hard yards and getting out and being seen tho', IMO.
23. Looks a steal to me.
24. I agree.... I think it is pure profiteering by the accountants that drive production cost to the cheapest place..maybe understandably from their POV. This tech isn't the youngest so I guess the weight is an issue for him as well...but he'll say the same thing about Booigies as well...although I agree he'll see more gtr amps that basses from that maker. I can only report what he said.... FWIW, he also said the design stage of the pre amp of my bass amp was wrong or rather not as he would design it, so he seems pretty confident of his stuff. and I do actually know of his pedigree. I just think he has no axe to grind....he calls it as he sees it and having been in the biz for so long, I would imagine he's seen a lot.
25. Not had a detailed look inside many Ampegs, but an amp tech I know hates working on the things. He says cheap components and awful lay-out...plus they are such a handful on the bench as well. Whether that would be any different if they were made in the U.S I am not sure, but then at least you could more justify the price premium on the basis of western build costs etc etc . I'd agree with Gareth... most companies would trumpet U.S made.. if that was the case.
