1. White Tort pattern
2. Been lucky enough not to play to small numbers of late, and I would find it dispiriting to say the least. The venues round here have to work very hard for numbers and the first thing a venue/pub will ask...is have you got a following? Of course, that doesn't magic up 20 odd people all the time, which is what they really want you to do to add to their regulars but they are also quite ruthless with bands who don't/can't do this. Some pubs have a one booking rule and depending on that gig..however it turns out...determines if you get booked again. Bands realise this and work equally as hard to get numbers... as of course, this determines whether you are worth the money. Funnily enough, there are more ticketed venues about now, around here, so it is odd that people will/have to pay to see a band at one venue, that they can go elsewhere to see them for free.... This puts more emphasise on the bands roll..... there are no freebies anymore, but if you can do the necessary, you end up as one of the bands that all venues lok out for. Bums on seats and beer sold..it is entirely a numbers game.
3. I must get new basses every few weeks then...lucky me...!!
4. I don't use Ashdown, but you can't argue with the fact that they seem to care about after-sales if this thread is anything to go by.
5. For that money, look out on e-bay for a Trace Elliot combo, As long as it hasn't been abused, it should do ok for a full band. If the band is loud, the EQ will be limited but should work for a smal venue/pub
6.
If you want a real laugh, park in the captain's parking space to unload your gear
although I would think the captain would have had a hand in this booking. I can think of a few that would NOT find this funny
7. Read the rider and that is pretty standard. If you sit down for dinner, you'll need to wear a jacket and tie... but since you will not, you go straight to the smart side of being in the club house. You took the gig..sounds reasonable to abide by private members rules, in this case. Definition of jeans is denin..although trousers with poppers and stitch-on pockets should come into this..most don't hold this up. The members are their partners will dress up, so so should you. That is the way it is...
8. You generally find that dress codes in Golf clubs are a good thing.. certainly, IMO... but they relax it for social nights that extend outside the club, generally. Two things strike me here.... it is a members gig, so members will have to adhere to the code of their club and do they know what they have booked ...??? I expect..but you should clarify... that smart casual will be ok... and talk to the organiser. Members will not be able to wear shirts out and jeans etc ..but guests might do. You need to clarify this as they are paying. It shouldn't a problem as functions generally have this 'smart' dress thing anyway.
9. Can't quite get a feel for whether you want to do this for you or your mate... If your mate is upset, and you are rethinking YOUR schedule, lay it all down and say, you'll be off in 10 months, no question, and if that is ok with them...plus they aren't number one priority music-wise, then do it if you feel it will work. I normally blow things out on the first get-togther if I know it isn't going to work...but some guys are slow into things so 3 rehearsals should show some BIG improvement. I certainly don't think you should flog a dead horse...and I don't believe in being in bands just because you are mates....it HAS to work musically. So, once you have rethought all the above... then maybe. The things about originals is that that has to work as well. Some people think an originals band has some sort of kudos or whatever but sh** music is sh** music. If you think the writer has something and you'll enjoy the input then ok... but getting a set together after 4 months and gigging it twice seems a huge waste to me if you have other things deserving attention. Original bands round here can't keep their members because if they are any good, they are poached by covers bands doing more dates in a month that some do in 2 years. What are you doing what for..????
10.
Do we really have favourite notes? I mean, really?
Nope.... not when all the notes sound good right across the board.
11. Manufacturing capabilty not withstanding...I wouldn't pay western rates for China, Korea, Mexico and the like. They don't have the wage or employment costs, IMO, so any parity with the UK or U.S for example, is straight in the makers bin, as it were. I do make a point of buying U.S made amps..hand-wired pref, and U.K basses. They still have to hit the spot and then I don't mind paying the premium. Generally...
12. I think there is a case for regulation and for it to be simplified....we hardly need a free-for-all though. And I agree, it is unlikely, IMO, ...you only have to see what hoops you have to dance through for outdoor licenses.. due to H&S etc...so unless they bin that, I can't see them deregulating to any degree.
13. Not really. but I'll phrase in keeping with the whole sound, or hopefully I do. I just listen and react to what ever part of the music gets me... but funniliy enough I don't latch onto lyrics.. never have a clue what the words are...but I probably bundle the vocal line as just another melody and that may or may not be the essense of the song from my POV.
14.
I am trawling through micro heads at the moment and have been thinking about the whole TC thing. Actual proper RMS measurements aside, I have been playing through a rig that has full-on speaker control/management (multiband compression and EQ for flatness) for 3 or 4 years now and have never been happier. All the big PA systems feature speaker controllers which optimise their rigs. The best sound I EVER got was through a d&b audio rig. I had more headroom than I ever thought possible. It was just a delight to play proper dynamics on my Double Bass and hear them be realised through the PA. You can bet your bottom dollar there was a lot of DSP doing it's funky thing there. I have never been anywhere near any TC bass kit and am not commenting one way or the other, just thinking aloud that it seems that TC are the first to bring DSP to the mainstream for us. The whole watts thing is........... ummm........... unfortunate, but the DSP thing is a welcome new flavour.
agree, certainly about the mapping and controller. Some of these higher end cabs don't work half as well without the controller element which is why I reserve my thoughts about TC cabs run on their own. What isn't in doubt though, IMO, is that the TC setup cabs and amp can sound very impressive and as long as that had enough watts on stage, that would be fine with me. There has always been this watts and watts thing anyway so as long as it fits the individuals bill, then ok. As for the PR thing... should have thought things through and that is unfortunate.
15. Is that a pressed chassis...??? cheaper production model ..??? if so I wouldn't be putting 400w into one.. I'd be think 400w the pair.
16.
yes been through the list, waiting for Manson's to get back to me, but they are more expensive than say the bass merchant, also the gallery may be able to deliver in a week, again waiting for them to get back to me. the gs212 would be a def if it was 4 ohm
Ask them to price match
17. Talking of stock... have you been through all the Aguilar stockists like Gtr/gtr or Mansons...plus of course, the usual suspects? http://www.aguilaramp.com/shop_international_dealers.htm
18. Never tried it but I have a GS112 pr and a DB210 pr. The driver is the the same in the DB/GS 112's but the cab is tuned differently. My instinct says no to your idea of mixing them..but I'd say the GS212 would work great on its own if my 2xGS112's are anything to go by. They are scooped, IMO, but the horn is good. I find with clean strings, the cab is very easy to set up with a decent amp. I like the 10's for when the strings go a bit off...but none of my strings are dull compared to some. This makes EQ so easy, IMO....or dispenses with it, in reality apart from timbre for the room bias. I'd say the GS212 could be an inspired choice if you can demo it.
19.
C on the low B (or in my case low A) string. Proper fills the room
yep..liove that low C.. I've had a few women come up to me and say that note goes right through them... I, of course, wish I could say, I have something else that could right through you as well... boom tsh..!!!
20. I think the point about expensive basses on commision sale is very valid...as any bass not getting taken very good care would be as well, of course. I think shops have a very narrow line to tread here..... tyre kicker or buyer, good day or bad day, stressed or chilled etc etc .. and I doubt they can win if the customer is always right. If the seller has expressed certain wishes to go with the sale... all the shop can do is try and adhere to it AND try to get the sale. I am sure anyone in retail will have a horror story or two.. so damned if you do, damned if you don't.
21.
And ALWAYS end on Freebird.......... already got my coat and running for the exit
Actually.... you could make a point of avoiding doing most of every set every other band does. I'd want to see a band do something different well..of course, you might not be instantly popular..and there are much easier ways to do things for quiker gratification... but I think you'd win out in the end. So, be discerning and more original thinking...and avoid the sheep
22. Be as good as you can be and better than most.
23. 2x10.... preferably from the same maker if the cabs are good enough.
24. Online, in the last year or so, I've dealt with Thomann, The Bass Gallery, Mansons and GAK.... Would use any of them again in an instant. They all did exactly what they said they would in a very quick time
25. I'd give Arron Armstrong or Wizard a call. The gauge can be variable as can the winds..I think that is the art of a pickup maker. I would think something like 4000 winds would be ballpark ..although that depends on the gauge, so you need a mechanism that can do that accurately and does not fatigue.
