I would assume most people listen to the song but with a keen ear on the bass.

Not at all but I do try to look after them & when selling on people always comment on how good the condition is. They're just tools of the trade though.

I started with a 2nd hand Peavey combo that stuck with me for years and years. I always dreamt of Ampeg because all the players I liked at the time advertised them in the magazines. I moved onto Ampeg a few years back as I was working so could afford it. I did downsize to an Orange micro rig for a while before returning to Ampeg with a vengeance because I missed it. I do wonder how long it'll last as it is a really heavy rig and I am not getting younger BUT it just sounds fantastic.

In the early days I tend to write chord progressions / keys / intros / things to note on a postcard but very quickly I don't reply on anything. I'm pretty comfortable across all the songs in my bands.

If I may just steer this topic back on track a little - There were a few rock stars who, for whatever reason, weren't subject to formal complaints around (or since) Op Yewtree despite high profile relationships with young girls. Whether your view is that of "predator" or "different era" I think as this is a bass forum the thread would be better suited as an opportunity to discuss his playing rather than anything else. Nobody wants potentially libelous comments. I say this knowing it is of course a potentially sensitive subject for some.

I've noticed online recently bass players seem to be the new drummers when it comes to jokes... as far as I can tell, if you don't value the roles of others in a band you don't fully appreciate music. I'd love to be a good drummer (it was my first start in music and despite a pro drummer Dad I was terrible!)

I think the vast majority will encounter issues with paid work clashing with bands. Even rehearsal can mean I spend a day thinking "I hope I don't get off late tonight!"

I saw him 5yrs ago and he was finally starting to look his age. I think he is criminally underrated by both bass players and his ex-band. The last thread on him was just teasing him (about 6 years back) and he's a very solid, understated player who can be very tasteful when allowed.

Reminds me of my attitude when I was in my late teens / early 20s. I thought it was going to be sillier. Good luck to them, although I suspect at least one of them will be a customer services manager inside of 10 years.

Rick Danko - The Band didn't hit the radar with me until my late 20s and that was despite The Black Crowes referencing them in my teens when they were my favourite band. A shocking oversight on my part. Also despite Mum's really cool record collection, Curtis Mayfield's bass player Joseph "Lucky" Scott was also someone who managed to avoid me until adulthood.

This is totally my dream band and it will happen one day. Pipeline. Red River Rock. Tequila. Let There Be Drums. To many to mention.

Too many "bits" that jump out from several songs rather than one piece in particular. And it would change every day too!

Basses do hold the tuning much better. It depends as well on string bending, vintage gear and heavy rhythm playing. So long as it is on mute I don't think it is a problem- obviously coupled with talking to the crowd whilst it happens so you don't lose them.

For me it's purely mood dependent, although I naturally default to a Precision - I've spent months and occasionally a couple of years on something else just because the mood has taken me.

A lot go through this (me too!) and it is a form of addiction. I'm 1,000,000 times better than I was but even now I do have to watch things. It's nice to get new things but it isn't the be all and end all. I did the same thing with a Rickenbacker and spent 3 years on a Squier to prove I had calmed down. Three mid range basses is plenty for me now but I do occasionally have a window shop.

The ability to stop any band member from whinging on about stuff that doesn't matter and to be able to placate any argument. I sound like I've been stung but it really hasn't been *that* bad over the years.

The Police were one of the first bands I liked as a kid (that I didn't get into via my parents record collection) but Sting has consistently disappointed me throughout his solo career. However the new album seems to be a return to the early days (by numbers or otherwise) so I must confess to being more than a little curious about the new album.

I was watching Drive By Truckers on YouTube this week and saw Patterson Hood playing one. I did have a Bouzouki for a couple of years which I tuned like a mandolin. With the longer scale length it meant some of the chords were impossible but if I went down that route again I'd simply tune like the top 4 strings of a guitar. A great fun instrument and if I had more space I'd get one again.

I found an acoustic bass strung with flatwounds sounds better than the stock. Ultimately I prefer an upright bass when playing acoustic and certainly see no shame in just plugging an electric bass in at these things.

[/quote] I'm another Realist convert... although I wish I'd tried the J-Tone everyone is raving about. The Realist is great but was quite expensive when I consider how little I mic my bass.

When I play guitar I prefer a purer clean tone with just a little bit of old school slapback echo. That said it's fun to add a bit of everything. I tend to avoid distortion but amp's natural breakup can be fun. Basswise I don't use anything. I can't think of an effect I don't like but I guess anything too an excess can be a problem.
