  1. Having not had a Jazz for a while, I'd been halfheartedly searching the web for one. I wanted an American one to complete an American Trilogy with my T-bird and Ric, plus I'd never owned a US one. Ideally not too new. Last week I saw Dennis Dunaway live with the original Alice Cooper band and said to my wife, almost apologetically, "sorry I am going to have to get one". Classic and Cool Guitars (whom I bought a '78 P-bass from many years back) had this 2008 model. There were a few mods that were surprisingly exactly to my tastes in the badass bridge (never owned one but remember reading about them when they were very much the latest thing back in the 90s) and the cool white pickup covers. The precious owner had put P bass knobs on it but kept all the original parts. Balance wise it is nice, just a shade over 9llbs and with a through string body. I say NBD, it actually arrived on Friday and I took it straight out to the gig I played that evening. Definitely a very nice Jazz and one that adds to what is a nice and varied collection.
  2. Four but I'd love to bring this out for an encore
  3. A little known UK band from the late 80s called The Dogs D'Amour. They caught me at just the right time and made me want to be a musician and not just a listener. For those not in the know, they always looked the biz, had the coolest instruments and sat somewhere between the Stones, the Faces, T-Rex and Hanoi Rocks.
  4. These guys are good http://www.northwestguitars.co.uk/bass-bodies/
  5. I've been lucky because in 30 yrs I had a head go in soundcheck and beyond that it's been a bass slip off the strap only a couple of times and one string break back in the 90s. I hope I'm not tempting fate.
  6. I'm another 14/15 93% score - I fell due to not being a thrash metal guy. This is definitely what the Internet on a Sunday afternoon was invented for!
  7. I think this is the gold standard. I was on two basses and just one decent amp / cab for a few years. What changed was I just acknowledged that I like buying nice basses so the number has crept back up over the last 18 months. It's all good stuff though. I would agree my six basses, although different, are excessive but I like having them and I am playing more than ever before.
  8. I managed that for 5 years. It's certainly harder when on forums. I'm not as bad as I used to be but definitely getting the bug 2 or 3 times a year now.
  9. I generally don't but we have a couple of stop start bits where it helps to do so.
  10. Since Photobucket went silly & we switched server, threads like these are not what they were. So her's my Hofner from Friday night.
  11. Me too & I'm not going to ruin my recommendations by searching him out!
  12. An Art Centre show to over 100 people; Brilliant night, although the seated audience being so up close and looking down on us (the seating!) meant it took me a couple of tunes to get into my stride. Great to bring out both cabs and have a more traditional bass set up.
  13. Saw him at Wembley on Thursday and it was an absolute masterclass in how to put on a rock show, from start to finish. I bought my ticket before I knew the old band were coming out so when I heard they were added I was delighted. Dennis is one of my many heroes and he didn't disappoint. I fully agree, the Mission were like some bog standard sixth form band and really punching above their weight on that stage. We missed The Tubes (childcare and travel).
  14. I prefer the colour scheme on the Jazz but I do wonder whether you wear the bass or the bass wears you.
  15. Did anyone else practice more in the downtime? :)

I just sat in the corner of a darkened room, muttering to myself and rocking back and forth.

I put up some shelves.  They'd been on the long finger for eighteen months!  Thanks BC.

Don't give Mrs S any ideas SpondonBassed.... I didn't tell her BC was down, in case similar tasks were "found" for me ;)
I didn't get any more practicing done, as I had a gig during that time....
However, my bank account is probably healthier - as I couldn't gain access to the marketplace.....

  16. I saw the article and thought it was great. I was really pleased to see it. I'm sure a lot of people start out on bass because of players like Rick Savage. An early influence for me was Dee Dee Ramone but now I am older I would rather listen to James Jamerson or Carol Kaye. I still smile and feel good when I see a mention of Dee Dee though.
  17. Over the years I have played a range of styles but always been in a band that reflects my tastes at the time. I suppose this has restricted gigs and when I was younger I'm sure I could have had greater success if I had been less focused / belligerent! That said I have released records, toured, had record deals etc etc, albeit on a more niche level. However I have always enjoyed playing. My father was a pro session drummer in the 60s and gave it up because although he was earning, he didn't like the music. He's not really played since his early 20s. I think this explains why I have the take on things I have and why it is still fun nearly 30yrs down the road for me.
  18. 20 pounds is the postage... and the weight too?
  19. That much leather is also going to weigh a tonne (my 1st reaction was the same as everyone else incidentally)/ A nylon bag or you may as well use a hard case.
  20. There have been a fair few threads stating the reliability issues were fixed. Granted not as many as the amount of threads early on saying these kept packing up. I'm on my second one and it is still going strong. *first one was only sold on to fund an upgrade to the Ampeg PF50t (& I know the guy who bought it, he gigs every week and still uses it).
  21. Wear what you are comfortable wearing. Whether it is an over the top Kiss style outfit or jeans and a tshirt, you shouldn't be too focused on this. Have a look at what similar bands wear and see what you would be happy with.
  22. Seems completely legit to me.

  24. I had a Japanese Fender Jazz in the 90s and it was stunning, as indeed is every CIJ / MIJ Fender I have ever owned. I wouldn't say that is a bargain but it isn't priced out of the market either.
  25. They appear to have lost the, ahem, improvements from the 2015 model. That looks great to me.
