1. That is a seriously cool looking Jazz!
2. After bass I went on to mandolin. Small but it does chuck the sound out a bit. Not louder than an acoustic guitar though. And the 8 strings are strung like an upside down 8 string bass (or a violin!) so it comes a bit easier than uke which is strung like a madman!
3. The biggest change I ever had was swapping a plectrum played P-bass for fingerstyle on a Jazz back in the 90s. Without touching the dials on the amp it made one hell of a difference. I also moved my hand further up the strings so I got much more bass. I've since changed again a few times over but that was the most extreme
4. Welcome to Basschat
5. I'm happy with my beaten up old Ampeg USA gear thankfully or I'd be GASing bad
6. In recent months we've had talk of Rick Danko, Randy Meisner (courtesy of me that one) and a few other legends of 70s country rock. I'd like to throw Mr. Skip Battin into the equation. Forget the classic line up of the Byrds (& I love Chris Hillman), I think the band was really cooking during their "Hairy Byrds" era with Clarence White. Floating ladies aside here they are in action I've just picked up the Sierra Records release of his unreleased 1973 forgotten classic "Topanga Skyline" which is awesome enough for my wife to come running downstairs demanding to know who it was so she could burn a copy onto her Ipod! Interestingly he has Chris Etheridge playing bass on the album and doing a damn fine job as I've come to expect.
7. Bumped into my friend today who is selling this. He's shifted it away from the site so this is now gone.
8. Thanks for the responses folks
9. Excuse my ignorance here but I connect my amp head to the cab via 2 jack to jack cables. Both are great quality as I don't like to skimp on cables. My backup head is solid state and has a single speakon cable socket as an alternative to the 2 jacks. Is this just a different option or are speakon regarded as a better signal? I'd be interested to know. Cheers
10. I used to be master of the scissor kick & I have desk tapes which prove I could do so without dropping a beat (admittedly the basslines back then weren't exactly rocket science). I'm just shy of 6'3" and the audience always used to take bets on whether I'd knock myself out on the ceilings (I never did) These days I'm a bit calmer so no cool tricks for me
11. I don't. I briefly owned a Roland amp which had it built in so I'd blend a little in but I never gigged the amp
12.
Welcome! Horrid or not, we'd love to see that P-bass!
What he said! I love your avatar btw! Welcome
13. Welcome to Basschat
14. I'd have a whole series of 50s-70s fenders that people would describe as museum pieces
15. Looks great Chris & I'm pleased you are getting more use out of (some of it at least) the bass than I did.
16. Four pages of feedback? Wow! Just stopped by to say I bought a Hercules stand from Nick, great guy to deal with
17. Do you get a good country rock tone? The one thing which put me off was I didn't think it was going to give the most typical country rock setting. What bass do you play through it?
18. Thanks Faceman, it does.
19. Great pics & thanks for the detail. Answers everything for me (don't need the serial number as I'm happy to take your word plus I don't know Rickenbackers like I know Fenders!). A lot to think about. Cheers
20.
It always seems to me that we spend far too much time talking about the gear and not about what we actually do with it.
Well said that man!
21. I like his honesty "REASON FOR SELLING IS BECAUSE IAM IN A BAND AND I WANT A NEW BASS EVERY 5 MINS"!
22. Can't believe I missed this thread, somebody got a great deal by the sounds of things
23. I don't want to get any hopes up (hence no PM) but I am in the market for a Rickenbacker bass and have funds. What do you think of this? Does it play well? Is the neck good? What's the weight? Can you guess it if you can't weigh it? Have you tried it? Any issues? Original case etc? Sorry for all the questions! We had another similar thread yesterday with the similar lovely pics but not much detail. I have found a couple of nice Rickenbackers out there but I'm always happy to keep it in Basschat if I can. I was probably going to go new but if I can find a nice 70s 4001 I'll go with that. Cheers, Tim
24. Likes Classic looking basses Precisions Rickenbackers Danelectros Gibsons unusual looking retro basses double basses Ampeg Orange Old Fender valve amps Jazz basses semi acoustic basses Not for me Headless basses a lot from the 1980s pointy headstocks I like more than I hate. Each to their own say I and there is no room for snobbery. I've played some great examples of what I hate, it's just not for my tastes
25.
I've seen him with a P a J and a Ric on youTube but not seen the Hagstrom. Lemmy listed a Hagstrom in his itinery on one album though i've never seen him play one! C
Here you go then I know he played Rickenbackers but I've only seen him with Fenders and the Hagstrom. I'm off to find a Rickenbacker clip
