1. I had really heavy gauge La Bella flats on mine, had to re cut the nut for the E. It sounded awesome & they stayed until I sold the bass
2. I play with the ashtray covers still on
3. Overpriced but I like it. I have a friend who collects Eko's
4. I had a Jazz back around '94 with a boomy E and G string; it's more common on Jazzes from what I can tell but extremely rare. I've owned a dozen or so P basses and never heard of it on a Precision. New strings, followed by a decent set up followed by changing the pickup seem to be the way forward when it comes to investigating
5. Friday at Zanzibar in Liverpool was surprisingly quiet but we played well. Saturday at the Americana UK festival (we headlined the 2nd stage) was probably my favourite gig of the year - played well, great crowd etc. Sunday was a quiet wind down gig in Stratford which was enjoyable enough and we played pretty much everything, unveiling new songs too. A great weekend
6. I had an email this weekend but no notification email which was unusual. I'd not logged in since Friday so had no idea until I logged in today and saw the red triangle. Just thought I'd raise it
7. I saw him last week in Basingstoke. Georgie Fame, Albert Lee - some serious players. I like Wyman but he is probably the least talented in that band. The drummer and piano player were amazing and the horn section were really fun to watch. It was a little show band for my tastes in places but Wyman was doing what he wants to do. I don't know about other nights but he walked on and said "this isn't a career move for me" which I liked. I'm pleased I saw him.
8. Sorry been away on tour - you have a PM if it's not too late. Otherwise, no worries
9. What are you after, just postage or a small donation to the site? I'll take the heavy gauge Rotosounds if nobody wants those two sets. Cheers
10. I got drunk before a gig where the backing vocalist of the support band was at least a foot shorter. Having done our big entrance walking through the crowd I got onstage and went to adjust the mic stand. I lost my footing and fell off stage before we'd even played a note. You can't claw it back from that!
11.
Apart from his looks etc. I think he sounds alright. He does seem to have half a mattress stuffed under there though... Can you palm mute if you play finger style? Am I missing a trick here?
Personally I play with the ashtray cover on so I can't do that. Bill Wyman plays with his thumb so can easily palm mute.
12.
The differences: Too much foam under the strings in a live situation. At 1.45 the bass player tries to play a line which he screws up because the notes die instantly. It doesn't work and sounds awful to me.
One thing I've noticed it it definitely sounds better when I play down the neck, the impact is slightly lost once you get further up the fretboard. Personally I don't have a problem with this guy's tone & I remember the clip when I saw it on Jools Holland's show. However, I do have a problem with his pickguard choice! Just goes to show we are all different
13. Both my Precisions have foam under the (flatwound) strings. If you don't like the technique I guess you aren't going to be a fan of my playing. I do it because I like the vintage thumpy sound & it suits my band
14. I bought mine just to look at the nice pictures really & I'm pleased I got it. I'm a bit surprised by the more negative comments, it's just a bit of fun really.
15. Broke the E string once at a gig circa 1998
16. Adding to the already good advice, don't bite if people stir it when you've left. Go with dignity and they'll miss you. If you go complaining you could lose friends. I too know what you mean, one bad attitude can drag the whole thing down. Best of luck
17. Thankfully, I'm happy and settled with mine
18. I appreciate that rOB. Because the Americana scene is quite small but loyal I know the 2 main promoters in Leicester (we played there back in Feb at The Donkey & had a fantastic time). I guess we're now just looking for a halfway home venue between Liverpool & Berkshire for Sunday so it doesn't have to be Leicester necessarily anymore. Thanks for the offer
19.
oo when and where are you playing in Leicester?
Unfortunately this one has now fallen through so we're looking for Sunday night too
Hi burritobass, you're best looking for your gigs down the Mathew Street side of town, either at the new Erics bar, Rubber Soul, The Cavern Pub or indeed the Cavern itself although it may be a little short notice for some of the promotors. Get in contact via email, you never know.
Thanks, my singer & drummer have pretty much tried everywhere - it wasn't short notice originally either. I think we've just been unlucky but cheers all the same
20. Sounds like your playing the wrong venues.
21. We signed an Indie deal at the start of the year and our album came out a couple of months ago to some favourable reviews in the National Press. The radio play has been a little quiet but fair. I'd like to have been a little busier gig wise but we've definitely gone quality over quantity. There's talk of the follow up album happening pretty fast too, maybe even a 2012 release. So generally pretty good. Away from playing my GAS that had been dying a death for a couple of years finally ground to a halt and I've downsized my kit to sensible levels - much happier with that too. Long may it stay the same too
22. As a massive Fender fan I think Fender got it really wrong. The recession kicked in, people are struggling so they jacked the prices right up. My most modern bass is late 80s now so it doesn't directly affect me but it was a poor move
23. I too would warn against the weight; at least with two single bags you can carry them together or separate them as required. I was amazed at just heavy the double bag was when filled with instruments. I sold mine on pretty quickly. Try before you buy would be my thoughts.
24. I too had bad experiences with Silverstone - he tends to deliver (eventually) but the customer service is the worst I've ever experienced. Hence the threads on here, of which WoT posted a few links
25. Purely as a point of interest 1976 was something of a transitional year at Fender (change of serial number position etc) and because it was the Bi-centenary year the 76s are always of interest to collectors. I too can confirm the F was only on the Jazz basses and P-basses are always plain. Great picture too btw
