1. I live in a terraced house and I worry about noise. Or did - my neighbours are remarkably less concerned! So now I stop tip toeing around and just stick to sensible levels and times. Double bass and acoustic guitar don't really make all that much noise but my concerns with your list would be the trumpet and the sax. That said neighbours can be more forgiving if you are not 7yrs old and making up for lack of talent with sheer enthusiasm. The basic rule of thumb I think is have a set time you practice and don't deviate. After 9pm is rude and so is anything much before midday. Bear in mind some of your neighbours might work shifts - we don't all live in the 9-5 world. The council response might have appeared unhelpful but actually people don't speak to neighbours enough and it's amazing how much a simple conversation can pre-empty a lot of negative feeling. I've dealt with a few neighbourhood disputes professionally and they are a real pain. If you were to stick to a set time within the flat and go to your neighbours with this as a proposal I reckon you'd be surprised by the response. It shows you are considerate of their feelings. Sadly none of this seems to apply to the girl next door to me with her foghorn voice, getting herself in the most ridiculous domestics with her poor boyfriend and then the, ahem, making up part is carried out with similar volumes!
2. I use Rotosound flats exclusively now...sounds like I need an endorsement Never understood the Rotosound bating that goes on here sometimes. It'd be boring if we all liked the same gear
3. I've been playing with covers on for 15yrs. They only got in the way for about 5 minutes and then you get used to them. If you are having any doubts (your post doesn't suggest you are) you could use carpet tape to see how they look & feel. Actually just drilling straight into the bass rarely makes the holes messy but to guarantee you get a clean hole all you need to do is just made a small indent first where you are going to drill and then you wind up with a clean hole. Line the cover up where it goes and make an indent with a point. Take the cover off and then you can drill straight down into the indent. It's a fairly simple job but I must confess it is a bit nerve wracking on the first bass the very first time You'll be fine
4. Just stopping by to bump this thread back up there
5.
And featuring our very own Burritobass.
Great news for those kids who want that "Tim Emery sound" I knew the piece was coming, although I've lost 2 stone since that pic was taken so I'll have to request a follow up article!
6. Carol Kaye. Oh & Cat Popper
7.
Let me know if you consider selling your '79 stripped P Si
I'd rather lose the house first!
8. Sorry, it doesn't say. Yes, UK only though
9. That's the way they roll in Beavercreek
10. I once worked with a very snobby musician who told me he looked down on bands who use gigbags!?! Crazy! Personally I mainly use hard cases but do have a gig bag for my Jazz. Gigging it's always the hard cases though. That said my double bass is in a bag! It's never simple!
11. I'm in exactly that position now I have a couple of things that are not worth selling as they are worth more to me than the resale value - cheap acoustics and my 70s parts bass. However the stuff that doesn't get played so much or has a value is what goes. I can see my all original 1978 bass going (it's museum quality) but needs must. I'm holding on but.... I don't believe there is such a thing as a keeper. If you have to, it goes. Ultimately there are loads of good instruments out there so you just have to be sensible. I could sell a load and still have a bunch left so not all bad
12. Welcome
13. Welcome Josh
14. Welcome Steve
15. Hey Vic, welcome
16. Welcome - you'll struggle with Hofner strings I'm afraid. They may have to be a special order or Thomann may do them mail order. I put Rotosound Trubass on my violin bass as that was what McCartney did. There is also a Hofner bass forum if you google it and they may be more help.
17. Continuing my "Buzzards Gotta Eat" instrument sale I'm also offering my Hofner Beatle Bass 500/1. I've only had it 6 months and it was bought to use on recordings. I've got the Verithin too but that is more me so in hard times I figure the violin bass can go. It's the entry level Hofner (£300) and also has the £70 shaped fitted case. It's in great condition and I'd let this go for £195 firm price, no offers. It's strung with rotosound trubass black nylons for that Rooftop era McCartney sound. Just seen this on EBay for £245 collection so figure mine is a better deal There is a feedback thread for me if you wish to check me out but I always post within 24hrs of getting paid. Here it is sat with the sunburst family. Thanks for looking. Solo pic attached too. More pics on request (it's too late now to start taking photos I'm afraid)
18. Minty, sorry it's already priced considerably under market value & I'm not wild about losing it but needs must
19. Due to a change in personal circumstances this year I'm downsizing my kit and first on offer is a 1979-81 USA Fender Precision Body. It was covered in detail in this old thread & I put a lot of time in stripping it (devalues it but just looks soooo cool); http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...=stripping+bass Because I enjoy things like eating food most days and not losing my home (a little tongue in cheek here but things really are a little tight right now) I've decided to let this go for £250 incl UK delivery. These tend to be on EBay around £500 (I paid just shy of that) but I figure the stripped finish coupled with my desire to raise funds fairly swiftly warrant the lower price tag. I had two basses built from 70s parts and I've reassembled the stuff that was more to my preferences into one killer bass. This body had a lot of tone to it but was the one 70s body I owned second & I think I bonded more with the first one. It's not a brick but it's heavier than average. The neck from it was dated 1979 and the pots from it early 1980. How do you date the body? The US seller reckoned this was late 1980. I have no way of weighing it here I'm afraid but it is certainly manageable. A good chance for somebody to have some real vintage mojo on a cheap budget. Pics attached but there are more in the thread link. It does look cool as heck, I'm sure you'll agree. There's a feedback thread on here for me - check me out, I'm very easy to deal with (that said I'm not into low ball offers right now, sorry can't afford to be) & I always post within 24hrs of getting paid.

21. My Dad was a drummer so I started out as the world's worst drummer at the age of 8. That was definitely my Dad pushing me. In my teenage years I revisited music & I always had people tell me I "looked like a bassist". I took this statement as a compliment but I'm suddenly wondering if that was meant as an insult!?! I've gone on and played guitar (lead, rhythm & acoustic), mandolin, harmonica, lap steel and banjo onstage (to very varying results!). Bass is my main instrument but I agree with the OP it's really about playing music. Bass feels like a second skin but if a really cool band came along and wanted me just to play mandolin I'd go with that over playing bass for a band that wasn't quite right.
22. Mine's 4/4 & I didn't realise....nor did anyone else. I don't reckon the difference is all that noticeable. Clearly it wasn't for me anyway Nice maths Wayne
