1. Having dropped a bunch of weight this year (eating less & exercising more, incredibly) here's me at soundcheck yesterday. Say it with flowers! And onstage
2. Cheers - a fairly nice review too although my Dad seems to be hellbent on telling everyone we got reviewed in the local paper instead of focusing on the bigger things
3. Beat me to it on the earplugs comment! Last year (i.e this year) was good fun but I naively hadn't realised just how loud a room full of people slapping away would actually be. Having not bought any gear since the last one I guess I'm unlikely for 2012, unless I break my Orange amps mug
4. I was using Peavey from the late 80s until around 2005 - same combo & it never let me down. I couldn't care less what haters say about gear (Rotosound strings get knocked sometimes & then there is the anti-Fender brigade). Live & let live, I say. It'd be boring if we were all the same
5. We did our first album on vinyl having pressed on CD and it's become something of a vanity exercise really. We started selling the record at £15 and it just didn't sell. We now offer it at a tenner and it still hardly sells. The CDs will sell but even offering free digital download with the vinyl people tend to buy CD. So with the new album (that was very much conceived as an old fashioned "record") it's just available on CD with a small gap at the end of the "last track of side 1" to show it was intended as a record. It's also worth mentioning your mastering is for a CD mix so you also need to factor an album remaster into your costs for the vinyl pressing. It's great having the album on vinyl...maybe not so great having another 390 copies sitting upstairs! Oh & most firms are pretty similar price wise
6. Thanks Mike - I've posted so fingers crossed
7. Apologies to the mods if this should be in a different section, but my band has a gap in our gigging schedule and will be around Liverpool on Friday 11th November. We'll be available to do some stripped back acoustic Americana show. Not massively bothered about any fees, just so long as we can pass a hat around AND we're not just playing to just the bar staff. We're up playing a big Americana festival the next day before going on to Leicester so will be at a loose end. If not Liverpool, anywhere nearby would be better than not playing Can anyone help? Either with support slots, venues to try or any pointers. Cheers in advance EDITED to include wider catchment area
8. Never liked Great White although I did like some 80s Rock, back in the day. I am sure there are those who do prefer Great White. Hadn't heard the Quo do it
9.
I tried a 5751 electro harmonics gold in V1, was quite good, what Harma Retro did you guys use please?
ECC83 Retro Harma Valves as mentioned in my signature strip. Takes a little of the grunt off so the sound doesn't break up quite so early. It's a subtle difference but a step in the right direction
10. I too did the Harma Retro mod. It's been my only head for a while now
11. File under "not for me"
12. I just had to comment because Sami Yaffa & Hanoi got mentioned. Awesome stuff, happy days
13.
Greetings Burrito... It's a bit of an odd sensation comparing our post counts that I should be giving you my opinion on how much your girl's Dad's bass might be worth! But anyway... At the top I would have said around £2600 in good unmodified condition. Changing a bridge often leaves remnant traces of having done so, as does changing a scratchplate. It's rare you can change an original s/p for an off-the-shelf replacemment without having to 'stretch' the original screw holes a bit - and in many cases fill them and re-position them slightly, so the same applies - remnant traces will always be present and these decrease values quite markedly. De-soldering has the same effect on value. My guess at best - with original parts included - would be around fifteen hundred quid. That finish isn't too popular either, so maybe even a little less. Hope this helps. Cheers.
Post count means nothing - I have a lot of chat but nothing to say. I figured between £1500 - £1800 depending on the condition of the parts not fitted.
14.
Is he going to let you borrow it?
Oh yeah, definitely - he's a top bloke.
15. I was around my girlfriend's house last night when her Dad came over. It's the second time I have met him and he's a bassist too. He'd told me he had a Fender Precision he'd bought in 1973 (I checked the serial number and his memory serves him well). Anyhow, he brought his bass over. He's got the original non-Fender case but has changed the pickguard, pickup and bridge. I gather he has all the original parts but I don't think they are in a brilliant state (all working fine though). It was his main gigging bass for most of his career so one that screams mojo rather than a museum piece. The frets have a fair bit of life on it but it would probably benefit from a refret at some point in the future. He'd quite rightly never sell it but I was curious as to what people thought it'd be worth. It's pretty lightweight too incidentally. I loved playing it! It's quite cool having a girlfriend who's Dad is a player - she did look a bit bored when we were discussing the pro's and con's of flats verses roundwounds and at my age I should know to keep such conversation away from a partner! Anyway, pics attached. Correction poor phone snaps attached
16. My thoughts too
17. Funnily enough I was chatting with my mate in the guitar shop today about Far East countries picking odd names - in the late 90s they had a brand called Diana and now Delilah is a new one surfacing. I had an old Diana tuner for years
18. Does anyone know which breed of dog it is that will actually be able to tell the difference?
19. Courtesy of Basschat came these excellent recommendations; Might not be to most of your tastes but it's 100% me
20. I'm in the quietest band I've ever been in and I'm always guided by soundmen / venues, purely on the grounds they *should* know their venue & client base. I agree with the majority of the comments posted thus far
21.
Why would you be selling a bass? Sorry don't understand the question... ;-)
You've obviously not got divorced then? Most of mine have gone now but life is too short for regrets
22. I've been playing with the covers on since the 1990s and I don't reckon there is any tonal difference to speak of. Just a question of taste. I think it looks good & I've been doing it so long that I don't feel they get in the way. And I reckon 1982 would be about right
23. We have deps for all of us that are rehearsed up & ready to go should the worst happen. We pay them more but as has been said, the show must go on
24. I flightcased my cab so I now just stick the cab on the flightcase when we gig. Job done
