1. I heard via a mate's Facebook at 1pm this afternoon. My first thought was "must post this on Basschat" closely followed by "I bet they've all beaten me to it. A great player and sorely missed by many, I'm sure
2. Most models don't come with them these days BUT it is actually a very simple thing to do. I've had them on mine for 15yrs (a fair few basses too) and first time around I was nervous about drilling into my pride and joy. So I got a musician mate who was a carpenter to do it. Most music shops will do it for a small fee - it's literally 4 tiny holes so isn't going to cost mega bucks. If you are half way handy with a drill, just go for it. I do my own these days
3. Looks great with the amp too
4. Having always played P's and gone for vintage tones I'd recommend 3 pickups. The Wizard Trad in third place & probably the cheapest. It's a nice pickup that delivers a really good woody thump. Second place is Seymour Duncan's SPB-1, vastly superior to any Fender stock pup I've heard (ducks for cover!) First place though is the pricey Seymour Duncan Antiquity. It really is stunningly good & not just good looking
5. I saw this on Rick's page too. I wish them the Tom Petty-est of luck for a speedy return
6. I used 6 basses on our last recording sessions, 4 were different P-basses though (black nylon strings, flats etc). I used a Rickenbacker on one track & upright on the more rootsy stuff (that actually wound up being held back for the next record). I believe too that you should listen to the engineer as (s)he does know the studio best BUT also agree, yes, you are the paying customer. I'm afraid I'd only follow Lozz196's advice if you had no worry about the budget. Bass tends to have the least input on recordings (sadly with vocals ironically so often being overlooked too - on demos at least) so it's best to just know your chops and get the part down as quickly and as best you can. Quite often tones can be fixed in the mix more too
7. When these came out pretty much *everyone* on Basschat was raving about them. I tried one in the shop and I'm pleased I did - it was rubbish! I'm sure the Vox Amplug fans will be along to redress the balance shortly but the thing just couldn't take bass frequencies. It made me wonder from the old threads if they had good ones & bad ones with me just being unlucky. I just had a regular P-bass though the one I tried
8. I was born in 1973, awesome year
9. I've bought from that seller before.... twice! My parts were a great deal cheaper & in much better shape. Go figure!?
10. Clothed Naked
11. To some bands the tone AND image has to be a certain thing. I've never been told what to play but I'm afraid I've imposed my tastes on other band members
12.
Was joking in the band practise, the more members in the band the less costs pP for the rehearsal room. Obviously the other way round once you get paid gigs - that's when it's time to get rid of some. What's the ideal number of players to a band to you?
I guess the trick is to rehearse up your 10 piece soul band but go out as a solo artist!?! A 3 piece is too many if one of the band is an idiot but generally I seem to be in 4 or 5 piece bands
13. Following the recent death of Levon Helm, I see Chris Ethridge had also been ill http://answers.yahoo...20191330AAAb1s5 Reports online suggest he has now died. RIP
14. I've not had a bound neck without the dots either
15. If you are worried a cheap modification is changing the valves to retro harma ones which delays the break up as the volume goes up. It's what I use
16. I've played with them on for about 15yrs now. I guess they took an adjustment but now it's second nature. It's for the pose though and in no way enhances my playing
17.
Seriously how cool is the guy with the Porsche?
In the fridge, daddio! Orange too
18. Why is everything "collectible" these days? I saw a few similar items in plenty of skips back in the 80s. That looks like it was fished out of one of those skips! Don't get me wrong, I'm sure it could be fun to do up but not everything is a lost classic
19. Can you play sober? Honestly, we try not to!
20. Drums as my Dad was an ex pro drummer so at the tender age of 8 I figured I'd be a natural. Unfortunately I was rubbish so left it a few years and picked up on bass in my teens. I now play a bit of mandolin, fair guitar and can blag it on a couple of other instruments (lap steel, banjo & harmonica) to varying degrees. Bass is home though
21. You can but if you play live they usually just go through the PA
22. Pretty much agree with Loz. I've had nothing but good experiences but I put the homework in and walked away if my gut instinct said it was a howler. And the one time it did go wrong (just remembered) I paid with paypal so had no issues there either. I dread to think how many I bought & sold during my GAS years
23. I'm pleased I started this thread as I don't feel such a muppet now - I'm in good (bad) company it would seem!
24.
The Danelectro DC is well known for being a fantastic sounding cheapie. The body is some kind of hardboard composite and the bridge is barely adjustable. Really fun to play aswell. They were everywhere (in stores) when they were reissued in 99/2000. Lots of people must have them.
Beat me to it! I did a session around 99 / 2000 on Andy Lewis (Paul Weller Band)'s Dano Longhorn and it was one of the easiest great tones I got. I had to adapt my style to pick playing but what a great piece of kit. Not sure if it's considered cheap but I seem to be favouring a sub £500 Hofner live at the moment. There sure are a lot of great cheap instruments out there
25. Can't believe in 23yrs of gigging I did this; arrived at the venue to soundcheck and started unpacking. I took the cab out of it's flight case and put my Orange Terror head on top. It then dawned on me I'd forgotten my leads bag! The head takes Speakon too so I was stuffed. The soundman didn't have one & the guys in my band hadn't even heard of Speakon. The support was an acoustic solo act. Of course I didn't even have a jack to jack or kettle lead either. D'oh! We're done so many kit shares and acoustic sets recently I don't think I'd taken my own rig since last November. I wound up going through the PA via a borrowed lead and fashioned a passable sound but genuinely can't believe it didn't occur. Has anyone bettered that? Forgotten your bass?
