Total Watts

1. Am really interested in this new head from ashdown, the ctm 100. My biggest concern is its loudness. A couple of weeks ago I tried the orange AD200 and I loved the amp, and it was pretty (extremely) loud. Problem is that it is a bit more expensive than the ctm 100 (about 450 euros difference). So now I'm leaning onto the 100 watter head from ashdown but I'm afraid that its a weak head. Will there be a big difference in loudness between the ad200 and the ctm100. I can't really understand how valve amp power rating or things like this work, for example will the ctm 100 be louder than a 500 watt solid state amp? Anyway but I can understand that when it comes to all tube amplifiers the speaker cabinet makes a huge difference - Im planning to hook the ctm 100 up to an ampeg svt 410 hlf (500 watts @4 ohms). Don't know if anyone here is using a ctm100 or anyone has ever tried one but is this amp loud (meaning that master and gain almost full would bring down walls)? do you get a nice clean headroom or does it get dirty real quickly (even more than the orange)? Sorry for all the questions but I do appreciate if anyone can help me out. thanks!! Ben
2. my budget right now is around £800 for a decent head and the hiwatts I came by costed around £1400 for the head. I know 800 isnt much but I do believe i can get some decent second hand deal within this range. (note that im talking about the v4b not the v4 which costs tons more - although i have no idea what the difference is)
3. yea i get that hiwatt and ampegs are oceans apart, Im just playing a safe bet and will probably go for an ampeg right now, I know that the tone's right and it delivers the low end i need. Ill just have to save up and wait a couple of years for the hiwatt. Found an ampeg V4Bh on ebay....owner described it as louder than his previous 3 pro and growls 'like a tiger'. What do you think about this amp? will it satisfy my low end cravings? (its made in Us)
4. Wow, cheers guys...cant thank you enough! Come to think of it, I NEED that low end. What do you guys think about the ampeg V4B H? its a 100 watter but like I said, im comfortable with a 100wtt amp right now. or should i go with an svt classic just to be safe?
5. cheers mate, that was very helpful. I actually wanted to buy a hiwatt custom 200 cause i had tried one about a year ago and just blindly fell in love with it. Unf, i couldnt get a good deal on one and to buy a brand new hiwatt stack would mean that i'd have to sell my kidneys. I figured this head would get me as close to the hiwatt as possible. Volume wise is not a problem for me cause my band is still in the rehearsal room and for now, all i need is rich good tone and low end. Plus if I buy this head ill have a guy fit a master volume in it.
6. Hey guys, I'm about to buy the marshall super bass 100watt mk1 (for bass guitar obv.). Now i never tried this amp out and its not possible for me to try it in the near future, so I just wanted to see whether you guys have any experience with these amps... I mean im confident about the tone but I'm really worried that it wownt deliver when it comes down to the low end. Im confident on buying say...an SVT Cl or an Ad 200 ....but i just want something more authentically vintage sounding. Does this amp deliver those low freq? its gonna be rigged into a 4x10 svt hlf... thanks
7.
When I had one, I used it with a sound close to that classic valve break-up sound, I don`t like full on gain, just a bit off of completely clean is enough for me. This was with the Gain on 2, and the Volume on 2 (through a Marshall Bass 412). The amount of volume available was incredible. Stick the valves in that clean it up a bit, and this amp will do what you want no trouble. It doesn`t have the most versatile of eqs, but to be honest, it`s such a good sound it doesn`t really need it. I only swapped it as I wanted a bit more versatility.,
Thanks a lot! that helped me big time! if anything ill buy the Orange and if i dont like it i'll just sell it. I'm sure it'll sell like apples being new and having such great reviews. Thanks guys!
8.
If you're nearby you can try mine,.
Ah cheers mate, but unfortunately I'm not. I live on an island and its hard finding the new amp models in the few music shops we've got. All the things I buy, I just buy online. So thats why I'm posting
9.
If there's one thing the OBT does NOT lack, it is low end! To be honest, I'm a bit puzzled at linking "clean tone" or "dirty tone" with "low end" or "no low end". I had never previously thought that having one would somehow prevent you from having the other.
No you're right, they're two different things. Thankfully, thats settled and it looks like this amp sgot plenty of low end. About the clean or dirty tone. I've read that this amp is really really dirty and I'm afraid I wown't be able to get a clean sound out of it. I mean, sometimes you get those situations were you lower the gain (and work around) to get a nice clean warm tone but the amp just then looses all its power and low end. And frankly, I don't wanna be in that situation! Now I dont know whats the issue with this amp...
10. Ahh. But lets be honest here, does this amp, in its original form, has low end capabilities?
11. Hi there, I'm really interested in buying the new orange bass terror head (the 500 watt lunchbox head). I've heard its loud, got a great warm tubey tone and its light weight. My only concern is the cleanliness of this amp. I've read in many posts that its the holy grail of dirtiness. Now lets get something straight, I do love a dirty bass tone with a little growl to it, but everyone need a little versatility. I'm looking for a clean usable sound, with that 'subharmonic' low end bass tone that doesn't distort that much and still retains its Loudness. So I'm afraid this amp lacks in low end and a clean tone. Maybe I should be looking at the ashdown ABM 500 or an ampeg svt?? or maybe not?? THANKS!!
