1. I really enjoyed the show, a near capacity (rare) local show. If I'm being honest I didn't really enjoy the last couple of shows which was worrying me but we really redressed the balance last night
2. I have them on both my Jazz and Precision. They are easier to work around on the P-bass but I've played with both for so long now that my style has adjusted accordingly. I love the big F on the Jazz bridge cover
3. I'm surprised the wig wearing hasn't come up more - I was a huge Kiss fan as a kid (still am) and Paul & Gene have both had some help. They are far from alone. Alternatively, a lot of ageing rockers shave it all off and this seems to be acceptable too. Overall, who really cares? Springsteen, Tom Petty et al are all rumoured to have had help - live and let live, say I. It's a fact of life that the vast majority of men (increasingly women these days) suffer some form of hairloss as they get older. You go with the cards you've been dealt
4. It took me 15yrs of playing to take the plunge & I too could have done with a much earlier heads up about them. I actually find brand new flats far too bright & zingy - an opinion I rarely hear voiced on Basschat!
5. I find nothing so odd about Basschat that makes me laugh out loud or find it sadder than anything else in life. This other site I go on is where I get to read detailed accounts of TV shows I chose not to watch, hear about meals other people are having that I wasn't invited to and then it dawns on me many of these people I haven't actually seen for over 20yrs and they are my friends. Now that is just crazy!?! It's called Facebook
6.
Each to their own. I saw this finish on a Strat up in Denmark St today. Much avocado-ier in real life. Def not for me
Probably one of the early 2000 models as they were much darker
7. I get it free as I insure my kit with musicguard. I pay £12 a month direct debit on £4k worth of bass gear. If you are thinking of insuring your kit it could be a good way of killing two birds with one stone. I assume they offer it on smaller amounts
8. I think I've played all the main ones & embarrassingly owned a fair few of those ones too
9. I'm afraid I avoided the Jubilee stuff but the Hofner forum did wake up a fair bit after Paul McCartney appeared with this & the excitement about the new run of basses was very apparent. Sven Pippen from the Black Crowes uses a Hofner 500/1 and Neal Casal's bassist from the Hazy Malaze records used one too. I think Hofner have always been a pretty respectable underdog. I get a lot of comments about my tone since I switched to Hofner and as most of us appreciate bass players are so often traditionally ignored. I don't care that it's Chinese, it's just a nice bass to me.
10. Well for any gripes on that Jazz neck it has to be said it's a marked improvement on the noticeably greener reissues from about 10yrs ago. That GAK price is awesome. I remember Whiskeytown using one (so I assume it's the same bass player in that Ryan Adams clip?)
11. ZZ Top always have the coolest instruments but if I played in a tribute act I'd just use a Butterscotch 51 P-bass. I like the look of that but for that money I could go to the States with my girlfriend, see ZZ Top, come home and buy the aforementioned 51 Precision with the change...
12. Two good ones IMHO. I have 3 now and I'd be too embarrassed to say how many it used to be
13. I hope I'm not the barer of bad news but I used to love the Nomads
14. I'm not "an old guy" but as a 60s obsessive I can confirm flatwound strings with a pick is usually the answer to most things when it comes to getting that vintage vibe
15. We've all been there. I remember once as a 16yr old booking a cab and the whole band trying to impress the cab driver that we were big rock stars - looking back now he must have thought we were idiots - We were only going to a nearby Wiltshire village! Can't think of many rock stars touring with 20w practice amps These days for the big gigs / small tours we hire a splitter van but normal practice is 2 band members per (sensible sized) car and we travel up that way. If I can blag an amp from a headline / support act for a London show I'll get the tube
16. I'm assuming it was a typo? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/320886479362?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2648#ht_1810wt_1185
17. We do it differently
18.
Nice implication that marketing man Cooper designed them, and not the pioneering amp inventor guy Matt Matthias.
There are quite a few inaccuracies in there such as Clive Cooper rather than Cliff Cooper but it's just a student film. He probably did it last minute stoned out of his head and thought the fruit was real! Good effort I thought
19. In case you want the link http://www.americana-uk.com/boards/index.php
20. This is an awesome thread. I've stripped a couple of basses but would love to do this to an old cab. Loving the retro stylings
21. Made me smile
22. I assume you've tried advertising yourself on Americana UK too? If not you may have more luck there as they always seem to have bands looking for players in the Son Volt / Lucinda Williams etc etc vein.
23. Great looking tele - I would like to continue the telecasting theme with my Waylon Jennings tele that was handmade for me in the USA. Assembled in Berkshire but the body started out in the East coast, the leather was tooled in New York State before finally being put together in, um, Berkshire!? I opted for brown and personalised it a bit so it's not a straight copy of Waylon's guitar
24. Well I had one and it was great fun - I especially enjoyed the tone setting "Wild Dog". Prices seem to vary a bit but it's a nice little knock about bass that would certainly complete the look of an Oasis tribute band. As a main bass it wouldn't be my first choice but if I was back in my old ways of having loads of basses it certainly is a real contender.
