1. Ok , I will do that , cheers guys
2. to be fair , we seem to sense when someone is losing it , a quick nod or a wave to each other at a critical time point or structure change and we are on it , we are in the habit of letting each other go off on one but then expect a clue as to when it is all about to go back into shape. we don't play anything overly complicated and they are all covers , there really shouldn't be room to get lost in a 3 and a half minute song
3. I only see alltruism and a great bass/music resource and thats all that matters to me , Ok I do spend a bit of time OT but , then the internet is sometimes wrong and needs putting right .
4. Cheers Paul , count me in ........ 1 and a 2 and a 3...........
5.
Thing is, the site isn't a shop. I think of it more as a free tourist attraction with a cafe on the side. Looking's free, but if you want a nice cup of tea and a slice of cake there's a charge which goes to help keep the whole thing standing. In the same way visitors (whether members or not) can read the forum, ask questions, look at ads. If they want to buy stuff via PM, they have to join up, still free. If they want to sell something, thereby gaining some kind of specific financial benefit, they get charged for buying access to the market. As for charging people to enter a shop whether they buy or not, well, I think it's stretching the analogy unless BC had been contemplating a blanket membership fee
A quality analogy , well done sir
6.
How do we know they're just trying to make the forum self-sufficient? How do we know they're not working on a business plan to develop a web resource, build its value and then sell it to the highest bidder for millions, splitting the money and retiring? I don't know either way and I don't really care - it's entirely up to them - but I wonder if people would view things differently when asked to help fund a 'community' resource or help fund early retirement for a couple of entrepreneurs?
While I can't argue your right to say it , it does come across a bit 'Daily Mail' ish, little churps like this may seem insightful in some ways , but does it really contribute to anything .
7.
We had our TWO MILLIONTH post on Basschat today thanks to Ped and Kiwi putting their hands in their pockets so that the site could thrive over the last five years.
which was it , it surely deserves one of Peds Prizes £20 , paid straight away , not because I have stuff to sell, but as an appreciation of the resource I draw very strongly on , hey I get to sell or trade for free now , result ..... Hmmmm ....thinks trading could be fun on some stuff I have gathering both dust and an earfull from SWMBO
8. I have thought of that as it happens , I have remixed my own entry and was thinking I would re- submit it.
9.
Psycoacoustics also plays a part. The headphones don't actually produce the lowest frequencies. Your brain just makes it up because you hear the higher harmonics 2xf 3xf etc. so you know the fundamental should be present. It's known as the missing fundamental.
I never really thought about that , and i had been using headphones for mixing. I reckon distance is irrelevant if the production of the music (and the bass part of it,or only the bass) is apprecited in a suitable listening environment
10. Milt, much respect , you are one of the worlds 'doers' , much like Jim . people who 'do' for the right reasons dont get enough respect , so you can have as much of mine as you wish .
11. Honestly , back in the day ..... 1) My next door neighbour broke the neck off his Hohner Violin bass guitar and was just about giving it away 2) My dad had a selection of woodscrews 3) we had a screwdriver job jobbed .
12. I haven't listened as I don't know what would constiute the sound that was supposed to be the right one , but what I do know is that in an orchestral piece ,you would have a fair few violins in both the first and seconds , if you had an equal mix of the examples in the test , how would that pan out , I would guess it would take a phenominal degree of expertise to nail the value kit !! ed to add , the point of the multi parts is to get the nuances of tone and playing to get the correct feel ,so that the diiferences add to the whole , maybe the next test should be an orchestra full of value kit vs 17c kit and let joe public make the call
13. having only recently learnt how to use DAW I can honestly say that my editing skills are probably better than my playing skills , I can now produce a bassline with far more accuracy than I can play it , and I wouldn't necessarily recognise it as me, having played it live in the recording , sad but true , I can spend hours messing with it and getting a take , rather than spend 3 minutes playing it right . still , I love gigging warts and all , but I hate the thought of having a recording that isn't quite right , bizarre .
14.
No, it wasn't a bad thing. It made me smile, and I'm glad I saw it. I don't think I'd bother going especially though! The women had made a little more effort, with pretty flowers painted over their nipples, that sort of thing. The men just let it all hang.
The men could have painted the hanging bits like pythons , unless of course they were only boys ed . Im glad you enjoyed the GB gig , a previous band I was in were booked to play a blues festival with him , but lack of interest saw it off .
15.
I have the bass after Falkirk and its available from 14th July onwards - I am in derbyshire between Bakewell and Buxton ....less than an hour from Manchester, Sheffield, Nottingham, Derby ...anyone going to pick up the next leg ?
do you have your gig details and anything you want saying on the map pin ?
16. There is no plan for it to go anywhere , it goes to where-ever there is someone who wants to get involved , the collection and handover logistics are just taken as part of the deal, and it travels accordingly, it started off down south , but the take up seemed slow and it made its way northward , the southern bass community need to raise their game somewhat , The Portsmouth contingent duly excepted
17.
Get one of These from Aldi and just hang it by the strap
But then you will weigh the strap aswell , I always find it awkward to do weighing with a strap on , you can't see the numbers properly unless you twist your hips
18. the map was updated even before you asked ed to add , it was updated before I read your post , but after you actually posted it
19.
Great quote from producer/songwriter Ethan Johns in the current issue of Sound On Sound magazine: "The only way, in my opinion, to get a great bass sound is to have a great-sounding bass player... People hear Danny Thompson's bass sound and they go, 'Can you get me that sound?' And the answer is, 'No, I can't.' It's the way he plays it..." So, more time practicing and less time spent GASsing for me
It is an odd one to work out really , as an engineer the 'great sound' he is after would probably one of consistency of timing and volume with the ideal tone for the job in hand , together with an ability to provide it quickly and effectively , and all that probably requires a quality player .
20.
...you have a map?
Yup , I believe it is linked to the BC Relay facebook page aswell
21. Awesome updates , are there definitive dates and venues I can pin onto the map ?
22. Success This is my attempt , I had a bit of singist help , and I still can't get the mix quite right for the vocal to sit properly , but I think it is worth putting up for an entry . If I get a better vocal blend I will try again , but it is doing my head in so here it is . link ed to post the new mix
23. Cheers Mike , I understand what you say , many thanks, It is soooo difficult to remember as the minute you change one thing it seems to impact everything else
24. I am really struggling to get soundcloud to upload at the minute , I have tried 3 times , it all seems to work but when I hit the save button it all goes away , and I cant find it , I shall keep trying
25.
I think mine's done now: http://soundcloud.co...me-out-at-night
That is a quality piece , it has excitement all the way through it , mine has turned out a little different than I expected , but much as I feared , darn that mix competition !!!! talking of mixing , that is my next job , the vocal is half decent now that I have done a bit of collaboration
