1. I agree totally Nige , But, sometimes the draw of a band is in the individuality of it , you feel more in touch with the spirit and music of the band because they are smaller, more attainable and easier to relate to . If a band turns massive , it might just seem that your emotional connection to what you percieved is exponentially diluted amongst all the new followers. The music is still as good , possibly, but you might just not connect with it in the same way , and music is as much about how it makes you feel as how good it sounds .
 2.
Dame here really I am................... I have to be Frank though.........
Wow , and the OP thinks he has a problem
 3. reading between the lines , I get the feeling that the song was a bit of a p1sstake of the whole country genre Uncle Dad , the name in itself , Who I am, the lyrics seem to take a stab at smallville USofA and the heart of the country homeland . the song seemed to be such a stereotype of the whole scene that it must have been a poke surely ... I still liked it though
 4. Thanks again Si , congratulations winners , I will have to find my notes to remember who I voted for It is time for you all to pull my mix apart if you like , I really thought I did OK , but it obviously wasnt to taste. In comparison the BV's seem a little forward and maybe the vocal is a touch dry and could benefit from a tiny bit of reverb. On a positive note , and again up for discussion, I deliberately EQ'd the bass and gated it a bit to try and get the detail of the double bass sound and a bit of the rattle to come through , I think there was only one other mix that actually provided any real evidence of the tone of the bass , but maybe I fluffed it but any suggestions would be gratefully recieved
 5.
Thank you all for your time and effort, bot entering ........
6.
Ive pretty much decided to give up song writing for a while. im going to let the block win this time, and i'll find other things to occupy my time, then maybe come back to it when i have the urge
............ I cant get no expression to fit my style . I'll give it up for the words to rhyme , yeah, just chill out till I get the sign , I'll soon nail it down when I've rid the scourge
 7. I am the same , but sometimes I envy those who hear a tune , especially on a piano , and can play along . I am sure that to play perfectly requires the sort of practice and dedication that I can't do , but I get by and when recording I can do a few takes in my own time and am not playing live on the radio or tv so my technique probably isn't up to scrutiny . If you want to be at the top , it needs the work , sometimes other things take your time , but you have to know your destination before you plan your journey , though sometimes the journey is all .
 8. that is a real tough one , the music you make is obviously important , as is the show you put on. I personally am in the camp that thinks some people will pay to see a pudding crawl , but your music will be something that you can hold up and offer as your legacy . If you believe that your musical output is worthy of the crap you have to take to get it heard then do it , if not take out of this the experience and move on, but I reckon serious passion in music is , ironically , what splits bands up . If not the actual song writing , arrangement or recording then the performance and promotion . it is often said that success is 10% inspiriration and 90% perspiration, the question is not whether you are up for it , I reckon you are , it is whether you are happy to share the journey when you think you may be carrying more of the load .
 9.
I usually get the greatest 'fanboy' click with bands/artists that I feel I've discovered for myself, rather than those I've encountered via regular media. It's not always that simple, but a sense of having uncovered something special for myself is a big part of it. If my friends or partner happen to pull a face of dislike at my newfound fandom, then that only serves to reinforce it even more! That's when my undying teenage rebellion kicks in...
I have a fair bit of stuff that no one will listen too , and sometimes I think it is some of the memories of the arguments we have had that still draws me to the music
I hear you mate. I have found myself being a bit of a unknown band snob quite a lot and when they become big, I go off them cos everyone is into them and Im like, oh, I had all their early stuff and that was really good. I cant help it, I just like bands that are "unspoilt" by the masses
I get this too , though sometimes I feel a touch uncomfortable as good music is good music . I don't really have any fanatical tendencies toward any band though QUO still tick many boxes and I will go and see them when I can , I do not fall over to get the latest release , in fact I loath much of it . I have a mate that cannot go a day without checking he has everything that has ever been released by U2 , he is fanatical , and I dont get it .
 10.
Well it comes with a huge amount of pre sets, making things easier. What DAW are you using ? someone on BC will be able to help you with setting up your keyboard for sending and receiving MIDI, and channels on your DAW etc. Garry
I am using reaper, and I have a few midi type plug ins but I cant make the keyboard drive them , I will give it a go with the stuff Ive got again , if I draw a blank I will try a thread here.
 11.
I was thinking of entering these but it would just not be up to the same level as everyone elses!

BIG thanks for voting Myke! And don't let what other people are doing put you off from entering something yourself in future. The voting is just the tip of the iceberg... the real enjoyment to be had is in the process itself and learning tips and tricks from others along the way. "It's about the journey not the destination, man" Anyway, thanks again mate. Paul
Top response from Paul , I would add that I couldn't even start up a DAW last December , and I have put a few bits together to enter as a learning experience , and while I don't expect any real chance of winning the thing , to click on the thread and find I have a vote is an incredible buzz, it means that someone actually liked it , and that is all that counts, if someone gets something from the work you put in, it is fantastic. So come and dip your toe in , you would be most welcome .
 12. it looks great , is it easy (ish) to use , I am really struggling with midi stuff , the penny just wont drop , my sounds are currently made with a synth that I press the keys and make the sounds in real time , the programming stuff does my head in , is this a program that will help ? Ps I know that I should be able to use the keyboard as a midi controller , but I cant make it happen
 13.
OK, I won't spoilit for you either. Didn't know Richard Osman's brother is Mat Osman, bassman for Suede.
That fact came up at the weekend here on BC , you must keep up
 14. It needs some-one who wants it, to arrange getting it , its that simple ,
 15. with original stuff it is very dificult, as so many 'original's ' sound the same , if the sound isn't spot on then the distinction between lots of them is lost and even the genre gets confused in noise. when you have turned down gigs from an availability viewpoint , it is even harder to get another offfer , and without regular gigs the following will diminish . colleges and student bars are probably the best port of call as they will often have a clientele that wants to hear something fresh and lively .
 16. Can I say I feel honoured to be a participant in this competition , I echo Dads sentiment completely , this month is absolutely incredible.
 17. Is a hand-over imminent? is it still with BB Blackdog ? if anyone wants it just make the call and arrange picking it up , roll up roll up .
 18. I was offered tickets for the MEN for both Rush (wednesday) and thunder , journey whitesnake (thursday) . If I really wanted to go I would have sorted my diary , but I have been to enough shows at the MEN to write off any thoughts of hearing a decent production. Theatre gigs work well , and a top soundman can make it superb , but they probably just can't rake the same coin in from 3000 punters as they can from 12000
 19. Some exciting ideas , I am not sure that I am competent enough to play those games , trying the simple stuff is hard enough for me
 20. I have ordered a few of the hercules gsp40 jobbies , they look like they will do the business , but with the ideas of the back up plan to prevent any damage . I will post some pictures when they are up . thanks for all the input
 21. I am still at work and had a listen through the crappy computer speakers and also on my phone , and I can hear differences now that I couldn't pick up before
 22. I am pretty much purely on headphones , I will soon be setting up some monitors , sad to say due, to reasons of noise/ kids/ listening time etc I let my HI-FI wane to NO-FI by the time the bits got cherry picked by family and friends . I am probably missing out on a big part of the learning by the sound of it ( or by the lack of the sound of it ) so I will make an effort to sort out our 'music room'
 23.
Rather than judge the mixes against my own , I have now listened to far too much Conferderate Railroad, Shania Twain ,Randy Travis and Garth Brooks . Whilst I am now halfway through my second bottle of JD , the crop has just failed , the car has been repo'd and the dog has run off with the wife, the experience however, has pointed me at the mix to vote for

I guess it just sounded better before I had something to measure it against
I tried to work out what the genre should sound like to mix to , still missed the target mind , but not displeased with it , I then did it again to vote . Referencing is part of the process , but I am still working out how to do it properly .
 24. great fun Dave , I liked those a lot .
