1.
aim for something 'jazzy' and 'urban'... once I've decided on what those words mean
Ah, I think you will be sticking a pin in the dictionary a few times , listing the words you pick, then rapping them with a few friends alternately....... at a random time signature
 2. I feel I should edit my previous post, but WTF , I wouldnt know where to start ed to add maybe that is just Jaaazzzzzz Niiiice.
 3.
Interesting images but one thing I have noticed on here is how important backbeats are to most folk. If one tries to create a Jazz feel, it is harder because the level of playing s is higher and getting a jazz feel out of sequencers and midi is nigh on impossible . We shall see where this takes us
I dont know jazz AT ALL , but having done a bit of research , could I describe it as a sonic version of artists throwing paint at a canvass , in turn , while the others hold the canvas , with a 'this is my colour ......splat' , and see what turns out ?

I get there are some 'tunes' but do they ever get played the same way twice ?

Not dissing it , but is there anything to get apart from everyone having a good splat ? 4. Well done guys , great tunes , that is a top call about the linking the competitions in the sigs I will do that next time
 5. I will try and spark up something for this one , it might be a bit odd again , but hey ho
I thought you'd be finished by now Bilbo....
quality
can i just steal your idea and pass it off as my own.... would really improve my chances
I could remix it , it would be unrecogniseable then
 6. download Reaper , I already mentioned it , 60 day free evaluation of the FULL package , and it works , even for me ed , you even quoted my reco back in post #61
 7. I fear that logic is waaaayy beyond me, as it sounds a bit like pro , even at 1, never mind 9 ed but it doesnt do VST from a quick google . what that means in the real world , someone who knows sh*t will say
 8. Sorry Milt , I missed the course bit that you have signed up for , yeah , do that , it will start to put lots of your ideas into perspective .
 9.
Here's a visual example...
Total overkill , but awesome , next is to maybe introduce some of that skill into one of the comps , when I can use it, I will demonstrate a practical understanding and application , and I fear that bit will take some time
 10. Its simple , just download the VST ..... just a thought .. do you have a DAW that doen't do VST ? or Download Reaper , then download the VST , it is purely to level out the mixes so that volume is not an influence of the quality. this is a 'never mind the width , feel the quality' kind of competition
 11.
Cheers for the viewpoint, Lurks! Yeah, I get that it's a learning curve, but it is kinda the direction I want to go in, so if I spend some time and money now, and decide that it's not for me, at least i'm not shelling out and wasting years on a course I won't ever use, if that makes sense? I reckon I likely will like it though. I've kind of jumped the gun too and bought Logic Pro 9 (I got loads of iTunes gift vouchers for christmas and my birthday so used them on that). Maybe I will get involved in the mixing comp, but I never really intended on mixing and mastering my own recordings, just recording them and farming off the recordings for somebody else to work their magic on. I reckon that would be worth whatever it costs, rather than trying to fluff my way through it. I'm guessing the mixing comp has closed for this month anyway, eh?
NOOOOOOOOOOO Do it Milt ( This month is still OK , it is running over ) You HAVE to understand the process , if you are no good at it , get someone to do it , but you dont need to do a course , just get involved , you have great confidence in all the reviews you do , just apply a bit of yourself . I love the way you would pass off the mixing and mastering to someone else with the confidence that the recording is totally in your control and sorted, it kind of has a really sweet naivety to it . ed for sp
 12. the word is that active monitors are the way to go , for your budget there should be some quality to be had , there is a very recent thread on this. I am on the monitor hunt , or will be soon
 13. Milt , I have just been through this thread , and I think the advice and the input has been awesome , I really do , these guys really know their stuff , and no disrespect either way , but I don't think you understand the advice and that it will NEVER kick in until you gain the experience of trying the sh*t out , I bought a home recording kit 2 years ago and fluffed it from the off , firewire ports ......to a PC ..... etc etc etc , so I sold stuff on cos I was a total numpty , I still am , but its not until you try the kit that you get to the bones of it , I reckon that half of the advice on this thread will take at least a year to understand for me , and I am starting to get it Join in with the mix and composition comps , you WILL learn shedloads and quickly , you will probably win one before I get a vote , but the learning curve is awesome , and when Si discusses something with those who also knows sh*t , and you actually understand it , it just feels great . What I am saying is, dont fret over the minutiae of your masterplan , get Reaper, a Focusright Scarlett 2+2 , a cheap mic and record the world when you've done that you can tailor the advice because it will start to make sense in a practical way HTH ed to change the word stuff , I use it to much, WTF , sh*t is probably a better word , I was even going to change the word fluffed , because it rhymed with stuffed ...............................but I didn't
 14. The output signal you refer to is possibly part of the effects send return chain , normally a Y lead which has a stereo plug goes into the 'insert' on the channel and splits so that the signal can leave the desk to an effects unit input and the output returns the signal back to the desk via the same stereo plug , I guess you could check the manual get a load of leads made up and try it , but would reckon if you have that sort of mixing capability can you not get the sound right through the desk and use the stereo outs to a 2 channel interface ? it might not give you the DAW mixing potential but it might give you a few clues about the process .
 15. good on you guys . the plot continues
 16.
Ideally you don't want to pitch convert or time stretch because that will result in a loss of quality. Because the audio is at the wrong pitch because the analogue tape was played at the wrong speed, you really want to do the same in reverse to the digital file by playing the same data at a slightly faster sample rate.
Reaper offers this with a soooo simple click , one click , to speed it up a touch , this will raise the pitch , adjust the speed to get the correct pitch. I used this trick for a vocal , I sped it up to deliberatly raise the pitch and because I couldnt vocalise quick enough with any clarity
 17.
We do have a PA system but no monitors or mixer
If you cant mix or monitor .......you have no PA , you have to look at this from a different angle , what do the venues want , what have you got to offer , when the two meet all you have to do then, is agree a price
 18.
I feel your pain My husband used to play the acoustic guitar most nights, which was fine as I could still do things I wanted to do without his music being too intrusive, we live in a small terrace with no room for him to have a practice space and with 2 dc asleep it meant he had to sit in the living room with me. However 2 years ago he switched to alto saxaphone, joined a jazz group and basically alienated the entire neighbourhood, and me! In the end we got electricity to the shed and he now spends every evening in there tooting away, and on a thursday he's out at his jazz class. So although the noise issue has been addressed I now never see him! he disappears to the shed the moment I take the dc upstairs for stories/bed, he's so obsessed with the sax, there is hardly any room in his life for anything else. It's taken me a while, but I'm fairly used to being a sax widow now though occasionally he doesn't come back to the house till gone 10.30pm, weekend that's ok, but mid-week I'm off to bed by then, so we don't see each other at all!
I think I will have to follow Dingus over there for a while
 19. 'Headphones are your friend husband plays bass, i feel you' Seriously though , they do speak as different language , the abreviations are way over my head
 20. Bob have you clocked the new Phineas & Ferb series , some fantastic stuff in there bud .
 21. I have got a spare Warwick profet 3.2 with a 410 pro that you can have a bash on if you want , the only way to suss what gear you want is to try the stuff , the profet has a dusty gain pot , but you will know if it gives the sound/volume you want . borrow it for a week or two , bring it back or make an offer , I am only a spit and kick away ps I have paid my £20 , not that I actually intend selling any stuff
 22.
..................... but the two pubs don't have a PA system and monitors and being an originals band don't have enough material to play by ourselves....................
This is a real issue IMO , a venue wants to book a band , ideally they would like you to bring a few people to support both you and the venue , but you don't have a PA , monitors , any following or even enough material to play a gig , you really have an issue with promoting yourselves when there isn't anything to sell . Build a set including some covers , enough to get a gig, rehearse the bejesus out of it , get some sort of PA rig (rehearse with it) and then tell the the venues what you can do.
 23. Entertainment and the buzz that you get from seeing people enjoying I guess. As we do covers as a band, we don't feel the need to record it, but it surprises me that if you do original material , some sort of recording is not an integral part of what you do. Surely its a creation you are proud of and want to have documented , a bit like like family photographs , you may not want to post them all on the net or hang them all on the wall , but you know where they are . Little bits of documented history make us, and our future generations who we are. I think 'can't be bothered' is a shame TBH
 24.
Just watching this on Youtube: One of the comments says it all - All citizens should be required by law to listen to Lowell George and Little Feat 'Waiting for Columbus' album once before proceeding on with their lives.
I love Little Feat but I have them on vinyl, and to my shame , have not got digitised any of it . many thanks for the kick
 25. I have always had an itch to scratch with song writing , and the competition in the recording section on BC has given me a kick in the arse to record something and produce it . My stuff doesnt amount to much in the real world, but it is my stuff , and the start of another learning curve , and if creative things rub off on the family ,that is another good spin off . said with all the authority of a total noob to the art, who only recorded his first note in December
