1. I think in reality a pop song is a product , if a producer /writer/label/A&R or, knows their market , they know who carries influence (and enough of it) to make it sell , if they have the contacts to get on the radio 1 playlist , they have a marked advantage over the same song written and produced by us guys and gals.
2. No idea about jazz Nige, but Stock , Aitken and Waterman had a factory making hits , was it the quality of the material or the selling of it that really counted ?
3. I have no stems to contribute , but I do have a learning curve to continue , The idea behind this is brilliant and needs a bit of help with the raw material , so don't be shy , offer some stems up and I can keep picking the wisdom of some of the great talent on here.
4.
Some of it is just to cash up, but most is simply what it is.
I think most chart stuff is to cash up and relies more on the promotion than the skill of songwriting , find a formula, promote the bejesus out it and nail its hat on. lyrics and tune follow the promotion and sycophancy of the providers of airtime/press/reviews etc. I think a lot of people could write a hit tune, whether they have the influence to make it a hit is a completely different story.
5. I'm gigging the 16th march , but in Chester .
6. OK Sat 9th it is google BCbassrelay map is up to date
7. really enjoyed them both Dave , I think you would be well worth seeing live , very entertaining stuff which gets you involved , I think the girls vocal is a perfect modern fit into the 'gypsy folk ' style. Critique wise , the two tracks have different feel to them , Cage a lion seems a little bottom light compared to tetris, I like both , but for presentation , I guess they should be of a similar mix . I am only learning the technical listening skills , and I am sure in the real world it matters not , but it is something for you to consider ( even if you tell me to f**k off )
8.
Blimey if it gets up to Stafford on the 23rd I will probably have it next! I've got gigs in Newcastle under Lyme on the 30th of March and Stoke On Trent on the 13th of April.
That could be quick, there are a fair few of us within a spit and a kick those 2 , and I could pick up on the 30th and have a gig booked in 13th April just outside Chester , I'm not staking a claim . it will go where it will go . If Rushbo could let me know the details I will add it to the map .
9.
Only played one bum note during the set
As long as no-one noticed , you may have got away with it ,
10. Tough sh*t bud , that does sound like it hurts , I hope you get past it , if circumstances outside the band really does force it then don't dwell on the departure, be happy that you had the experience and maybe one day if you get the chance new opportunities might come knocking , good luck
11. My first proper outing with my new Spector euro4 LX , and WOW , it was superb , I bypassed the pedals as nothing really needed any FX and just played with tone available on the guitar and it was very impressive , the gig was a buzz , we played some stuff better than we had for a while and it was sweet . the PA amp fan packed in after 4 songs and was smelling very odd, so a quick reconfigure got us back up without too much fuss, then the drummers kick pedal fell apart 4 songs from the end , it was amazing how much sound space that left me , and got called up for 3 encores . Great night , blooded a couple of new ones , can't wait for the next gig .
12. I have lyrics written for this months , that raises a big problem though............it needs a melody ......then a biggerr problem ............they need to be sung
13. I am using an Ampeg Pf500 into a Schroeder 21012 thats plenty for my needs ...................................at the moment
14. I have just bought one new , the TW model ,emerald quilt maple , beautiful , beautiful guitar , I love it to bits and can't put it down . The knobs don't have detents but have a ridge on top so you can easily tell where they are , the range of tone is incredible, the depth and solidity gives you so much confidence , plays like a dream , the sustain is just forever , it pumps out quite a hot signal . I will get round to personalising the set up slightly , but out of the box its a winner . I always played with a pick , but for some reason I feel a lot more confident finger style with this beauty, I am not sure why , I do still use a pick but I don't feel I have to , odd. I have had GAS for the Emerald colour for years , and the gig money of the previous year just about covered enough to let me order it. I am a very happy bunny
15.
Could bring it back to Sussex for Friday's gig, but then I disappear for a week or so, so unless its taken on the night that might be a problem as gigwise I then have sweet FA
Go for it , there must be someone close gigging who can take it on, I am not sure that gig handovers are going to work in every case , but as long as the handover is photo'd and documented I reckon the spirit is good , Jim will have the definitive on this , but just keep it moving would be sound. I would love to do the show but am gigging on Sat and off to the Welsh stages Rally on Sunday , on an invite, so I will wish all the BCers a great weekend , and hope the Baton keeps moving
16. brilliant idea Si and very generous of your time.
17. Well done Garry , it got my vote , brilliant piece of work. that new pic looks like it should make it fun
18.
I have found my waistcoat and duly started the photo tribute to 90's Bassist & Fran.
Top effort mep But I can't help thinking theres a scale issue with these two pics , Fran looks like he is short than his rig , You look like you are taller than your conservatory
19. Cheers Si I am getting a better feel for the sound now , though sometimes I know something isn't right but am not sure what treatment it needs ,
Bass sound is nice especially in mellow middle section!
I liked that too , I duplicated the bass tracks and had them EQ'd low and mid seperately and panned opposite, so that it had the effect of stretching the space , I think it worked OK when there was enough room to hear it
20. Great post Nige , Some of the music, bands and shows put on on by BCers are fantastic , I have been to a couple , plan on seeing a fair few more. It can be a touch awkward getting pass outs occasionally , what with gig and rehearsal time already taken out . Trying to write songs , learn DAW and mixing is great because I can involve the kids easily and it makes it fun , taking them to see the Terrortones or Dr Blue on the other hand , well I think I might end up a bit . But I will be attending more BCers gigs this year Deffo ed for atroshus spilling
21.
He still hasn't responded to my email.
he might pop over for a nosey to see WoT the fuss is all about , did you mention BC or just send a hello email.
22. In a previous covers band the guitarist always insisted that we all had the right to veto any song we didn't want to play, seeing a grown man stand with his guitar looking like smacked arse while we jammed something he refused to acknowledge was hilarious. I left that band because it was damn near impossible to get any new songs in
23. Cheers Skol , thanks for the review , I think I am getting somewhere, some of the techniques are slowing getting in my head and I have bought that mixing book you suggested , onwards and upwards .
24.
cheers Dave , thanks for that I was really pleased to see a vote
Thanks Skol for your thoughts , I shall try to remember , I am slowly getting the hang of it all
25.
