1.
Sorry if this is rambling, was up till gone midnight trying to get a half decent version of 'Going Underground' under control.
Be careful with this one , fantastic tune , but you need to be up in the mix and quite bright , almost clanky and it makes you exposed , the song is not that awkward to play but the start needs the confidence , if you get a chance run their start through a couple of times so that you know who does what, where , if you are not expecting what they throw at you it could get a bit messy. I played along to the CD for ages and new it inside out ..... until the band tried it out for real , it took a few goes to get the start right .
2. that sounds like a shame , good luck anyway
3.
10/10 for 'Lonely Boy'!
[thread hijack] is lonely boy an 'in' song ? to listen to it it is a touch lack lustre, our lead guitar suggested it as the kids love it , and after 15mins we had a good dynamic sound to it , but is it a crowd pleaser ? [/thread hijack]
4. Good luck with getting it all nailed , but I think they are both taking the mick TBH , I'm with Les on the audition thing , and why on earth would band 2 leave it so late to make a call , and even then it sounds like you are effectivelly depping for a non existing player
5. Cheers Mick , I will do a bit of digging with that info and see what crops up , it sounds a bit odd ATM but I am sure I will pick it up when I have a play with it. Kev
6. I think I have sussed the FX thing , creating sub groups as you said but every group is then in a folder which contains the whole track , then you can apply FX to this folder so that the FX affect everything , is that right .
7.
As for my mix, it went something like this.... Listen to the tracks up at a unity gain
Is that like normalizing the tracks to a common gain?
Set out the tracks and group them all into sensible and useful groups and subgroups, I ended up with:- FX group - Plate reverb - Ambience reverb - Delay
Does this mean you have groups of effects that apply to the whole mix as opposed to applying effects to each track?
I spent about 4 or 5 hours on the mix
I spent that learning how to pan ed for spelig
8. I am only just getting my head around Reaper , I can record on it now , I jave just started to grasp the concept of envelopes on each track for volume and panning , I have aquired some headphones (Shure 440 ?) , and I have played with a couple of the EQ VST's you mentioned earlier. I haven't got as far as the grouping of tracks, effects etc I am not sure what that is all about , I will do some you tube research on that stuff , But I think you are correct about the ear training as well .
9. I use an Ampeg pf500 , bought from the classifieds on here, I kind of bought it as a back up to a warwick profet 3.2 , but find I use it as my main kit. I was always skeptical of behringer stuff , but my experience of seeing 2 old ep2500 power amps being thrown about (dropped off sack trucks etc) and condensated to scarily dripping levels , yet putting out the goods on the PA just amazes me . I worry now though that just saying that might just be the curse that sees them off ed to alter a potential infection into a term of suspicion
10. Daft as it sounds I have used cab carpet which is pre glued like sticky back plastic , it gives a great finish and as long as you have corner protection will stay in pretty good nick . I can't remember where I got it from ATM , it is a far cry from the old Thixafix glueing method , though it was always an added bonus that with the fabric glues you could always view your finished work from the same altitude as the kite you where as high as
11.
lurksalot: https://soundcloud.c...nd-chance-again Snare-ring-tastic is that done with a lot of compression, or with eq? OK, this is clearly a mix newbie, there are some real classic mix issues in here that everyone makes when they are starting out (really pleased you entered this - thanks!). You need to achieve far better seperation between instruments, this is done with EQ and Panning in the first instance, and after thats right then compression and ducking techniques play a role too. Have a good read of the Recording101 blog on eqing and have another go at eqing this, then, when its all eq'ed as nicely as you can try a stupidly simple LCR pannign approach (everything is only allowed to be Left, Centre or Right in the mix, hard panned. The seperation will be far greater making the track easier to hear, without the build up of competing frequencies. And we havent even got on to the compression side yet Its a decent early effort though, a bit of perseverance with the basics and it will improve massively
Cheers for that ,I did read all your Blogs , but I guess I still haven't understood it yet , I did try the EQ malarkey but my technique needs some refinement , Panning , well I only sussed how to do that last weekend so my mix was totally devoid of it , compression is waaaaay over my head but will read and play as time permits , I did try reverb and delay on stuff but that was about as far as technique stretched to . Must try harder
12. UH I think I will have to read that post about 5 times to understand the jargon , still , I am not sure exactly what the answer was going to tell me, as I guess I didn't really understand the question. hey ho , whats the next track I can sort out for you
13. Fill your boots, have a great experience ... ps ..if you need to borrow a schroeder 210112L , I'm using mine so find another one
14. I'd spill the beans on my effort , but after listening to everyones elses , my mix sounds like I already spilled the beans all over it
15. all brilliant entries , great production and playing skills , the writing on one in particular though, I thought was just superb and fitted the theme so well.
16. Er 20s for me , though I have just seen the other stuff on the ACS site , and maybe if I won the lottery the 9's look doody , or even when fitted don't look at all .
17. If your not inspired it is easy to lose interest , I played at school , then in a couple of garage bands , but sold up for about 10 years, I got bought a new one by the wife and hit lucky with a blues outfit that the neighbour was putting together , a lack of ambition of the band meant I left (after a fair few years) with no intention of playing much but doing something else. Then my lad suggest I looked at joinmyband , I did for the craic and fell in with the best bunch ever , the rhythm guitarist has been in bands for 30yrs and I swear he can play any song you care to mention in 2 secs , the drummer is sooooooo solid it is untrue, and the singer , well he can sing like a bird , ok the lead guitarist is a lead guitarist but is often on fire . Do what you have to, and let something inspire you , tell us what is is when it happens, but don't write write the low end off just yet

19.
Also looking weird helps...
Hmmm , I think wierd is relative , with a body shaven grinch as a front man , a lead guitarist with the shortest skirt and best tats in the house, and you, it would appear the stickman is the weird one
20. this is soooooooooooo subjective , as appears from the responses. I want to understand this stuff aswell , and while I may have no chance , the process of learning it is proving very interesting and a great source of learning can be had not too far away , personally, I think training the way you listen is a massive step towards knowing what you hear .
21. loads of Jack Bruce stuff is very blues inspired , Clapton etc , and will echo the Peter Green Fleetwood mac era , as well as all the classics , but can come equally modern with the likes of Joe Bonnamassa , the Genre is wide open , fill your boots with your own play on it Ed to add I have played support to Larry Garner a couple of years ago when he played with Norman Beakers blues band , they were superb, 'keeping the blues alive' is his philosophy , and a great guy to boot.
22. Excellent news Jim , I shall start the map in the morning.
23. I absolutetly understand the learning resource part of the competition , thats why I have included myself in the process , I know my skills and kit is very limited , but, the whole idea is a great insight into the world of production. I have seen documentaries, read a few articles and hear reference to mixing quite regularly , but its not until you get your hands dirty that the pieces start to fit . Lots of people know this stuff and can hone their skills , me , I am in at the first rung and it is a fantastic idea. when I first saw the competition announced , I could barely start up a DAW , and had no idea what the competition was all about. ( if your hear my entry, you might argue I still don't) but at least I've got to the first rung . Some of the replies take a fair bit of thought and time to respond and post, so I for one appreciatte the effort that a lot have put into the project.
24. Brilliant Jim , though my daughter will try to prise that from hands , she has a thing for anything purple at the moment
25. Charic , I have now read your spoilers , and thank you for being so polite about mine , different will do just fine
