Dad , I had a thought the other day, when checking your mix , why not flip your cans round to get a quick assesment of the balance .
-
Cheers Paul I was B , and a bit surprised on the vocal and reverb comments , the mix was pretty dry of reverb as I am normally guilty of washing all over the thing , but yes while I did strip out a lot of the mud , the bass is a touch boomy even though it has well defined mids , ah well , thanks any way , Just tidying up my notes (for what they are worth) and will post them tommorrow.

Well done Deb , lovely tune and playing , I think your singing is spot on, actually I would have liked more of it , For practice I would suggest singing and recording one line at a time , that way the breathing is easier and makes the note control more even. I have just realsied the summer months aren't condusive to vocal recording , the neighours windows are still open and if I am singing now they might hear it, it is not so bad if I get 1 take in 20 , you guys will hear it , but the neighbours will hear the other 19 aswell
Mix B Bass sounds nice, but its very very loud in the mix, BV is rather loud too I think. You struggled with the drums, they arent in a space at all, very very dry indeed, not much evidence of the OH and room mics, which is a shame. Not so twangy and harsh as A though.
Cheers Si , I'll take that , though the bass does sound a touch louder on the cloud version than on my own wav on my computer , I too on reflection thought the BV a touch too much, but I didn't realise I had a problem with the drums . It will take a while to digest your mix notes , but will try and apply some of the ideas into mine when I get the chance . I have bought some monitor speakers now, so I will have to get a feel for them , I should then have enough to really lose my way . Are mix notes an intrinsic part of the process ? I made a few comments about each mix as I heard them , but I didn't make comprehensive notes about mine , I should probably make an effort to write it down as I do it I guess

I have the format , drums and a few filly bits down(ish) , lyrics ready , the bassline is doing my head in though , I used to do the stuff in my sleep but getting a 3 minute blues line down is just hurting right now, never mind the vocal , I may need some help with that.
Bloody hell Paul, you weren't lying were you I'm addicted already!! I have recorded all the parts, but may re-record some of the vocals.... Haven't decided yet!! I have had a lot of fun though, even though my song is quite "dark". I have learned soooo much yesterday and today.... I've never used a DAW before, so it's a steep learning curve. So, my fellow basschatters, I think you will be having an entry from a female this month In all honesty, I can't see me getting a single vote, but that's OK as there is some incredible talent on here (which I most certainly haven't developed.... Hopefully yet!). However, the doing is an accomplishment for me in itself, so happy days!
It sounds all good so far , don't worry about the votes , I use the competition as a kick up my backside to do something I have always wanted to do , so it is the experience, process and the participation that was my motivator , but , when I got a vote I could not believe it , what a buzz , honest , someone liked mine a bit more than the others . I reckon there is a nice person somewhere just doing the nicest things in the world .
Very chuffed to have two new songs arranged and completed at rehearsal last night. One of them clocks in at an epic 1minute and 25 seconds!
play it twice ( with no gaps )
That's how I did it. I'm not the best in the world but I can think I am - sometimes that's just as useful.
I reckon I am the best singer in the world , the only issue is, everyone else in the world doesn't have the skill to appreciatte it. its a shame as they are missing out and end up listening to the likes of Take That .....learn to listen peeps , don't take in the ridiculous notion that you need to hit a tune to sing , just get stubborn , Ps ..I reckon Dr Dave can walk the walk though

Lyrics done , though that means it may well end up instrumental

I have got a couple of ideas , but I am wary of letting on , only because I will probably find I can't do it and have to change the style completely , but I think a blues theme might be my general direction
-
Of all the styles that this picture seems to inspire and subliminaly suggest , I still have that country twang thing running through my head
-
I may be missing some thing on this , but nearly every room you play will affect your tone in a different way , If you are looking for a 'one setting fits all ' solution you won't get it , go wireless or get a long lead and make your way to the back of the pub and do your sound check there . you will have to run back and to for any amp EQ, but it will give you a clue and a much better feel the sound you are producing

Any news ? who is going to be next to pick up the baton
-
When I got married , I had no kit at all, it had long gone , but as stories go Mrs Lurks recalled some of the bass telling and asked the neighbour to pick one and she bought it for my birthday , as time goes by , said neighbour needs a bass player for his band , and yours truly steps up, I have moved to a different band since , but we all know who to blame when the issue of bass playing crops up . I think she is relatively supportive, though likes the occassional comment when stuff gets delivered , but as I keep explaining, it is a relatively inexpensive hobby, fund generating and probably less time consuming than the likes of golf etc
-
It sounds like the signal is to hot so the compressor is trying too hard and not coping , you will probably need to re-set the input signal to a more manageable level .
-
I know mass is the thing , I fit new double glazing and throw away loads of old double glazed sashes and the like , it wont absorb noise but will help add mass if used to fill a cavity between rooms to prevent seepage , just PM me and come and collect , it might save a bit of landfill if it works for you .

I never look at the plucking hand ....except last gig.... there were only 4 peeps left at the gig ( B/H , good weather , loads of local festivals , excuse etc etc ) , so I joined them on the dance floor . cue well oiled young lady drapes herself over me , and pretends to play strum style over my right hand . being polite and the song being Dakota , the right hand just does a LOT of repetetive finger flicking so I demonstrate this to her , she cannot quite get it , and looking at my technique , says it looks quite rude , at this point I think my technique is working , except the young lady makes her excuses , walks off the dance floor and pukes her way back to her seat.... class. I like to think the potential of my technique sent her head into a spin , though more likely the close encounter just turned her stomach

stringing a fretted bass with flatwound strings
lurksalot replied to sprocketflup's topic in General Discussion
I thought flats on a fretless was the law ..... and I have flats on all bar my newest and that wont be long ed cos I hit the post button too quick -
I get most of that Dad but I thought the vocal on yours was a touch low in the mix , both lead and BV , and I thought the mix slightly unbalanced , a touch strong on one side, but hey , you got more votes than me , well done
-
What he said....
You Got a Vote !!!!!! it can't have been that bad my notes on yours where that there was too much reverb on vocal , undisdiguished bass , not muddy but no real ID of the DB tone ( I think most were like that though) ,and the snare seemed a bit thin , overall good. Not a very technical appraisal I am sorry , just one from my own ear , I did try to calibrate my ears before I listened though

From liking a band to being an active fan - when does it happen?
lurksalot replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
I agree totally Nige , But, sometimes the draw of a band is in the individuality of it , you feel more in touch with the spirit and music of the band because they are smaller, more attainable and easier to relate to . If a band turns massive , it might just seem that your emotional connection to what you percieved is exponentially diluted amongst all the new followers. The music is still as good , possibly, but you might just not connect with it in the same way , and music is as much about how it makes you feel as how good it sounds . -
Dame here really I am................... I have to be Frank though.........
Wow , and the OP thinks he has a problem

reading between the lines , I get the feeling that the song was a bit of a p1sstake of the whole country genre Uncle Dad , the name in itself , Who I am, the lyrics seem to take a stab at smallville USofA and the heart of the country homeland . the song seemed to be such a stereotype of the whole scene that it must have been a poke surely ... I still liked it though

Thanks again Si , congratulations winners , I will have to find my notes to remember who I voted for It is time for you all to pull my mix apart if you like , I really thought I did OK , but it obviously wasnt to taste. In comparison the BV's seem a little forward and maybe the vocal is a touch dry and could benefit from a tiny bit of reverb. On a positive note , and again up for discussion, I deliberately EQ'd the bass and gated it a bit to try and get the detail of the double bass sound and a bit of the rattle to come through , I think there was only one other mix that actually provided any real evidence of the tone of the bass , but maybe I fluffed it but any suggestions would be gratefully recieved
