1. well , Lurksalittle's input this month, is that we need it pop styleeeee So pop it is, I have sooooo much too learn, having listened to some 'pop' it is all in the production , at least the lyrics won't take much doing , but sorting the feel of the current pop pumping genre and just as awkward ......... a singist This month will take some oil to be burning at midnight ................
2. A good lyric can read your own state , it can feel your pain and it can share your joy. when you hear the song that speaks to you in these terms it becomes very special .
3. If its a song then the lyrics are very important to me. There are times when I will here a line and thats it , I cannot bear the song . I really struggle with rap as I get the impression that there are tales to tell , but I don't understand a word of a lot of it and I then get turned off as soon as I hear a line or 2 that means nothing to me. I suppose a lot of metal is similar , I love guitar riffs and breaks , but equally the vocal has to cut through with the goods I also get irritated by lyrics that get involved in describing the song that they are singing. Daft punk 'What rhymes with hug me '............. your lyrics bug me I can listen to any genre of music if there is a story to be told well .
4. Congrats SKol , Urb and collective superb effort once again , and top stuff from everyone else aswell , I got 5 votes which is as many as I have in the previous months added up , so I am well chuffed. thanks to those who took the time to vote and special thanks to those that sent them my way The new photo throws up loads of ideas , I am thinking maybe a Sinatra style slow swing number , based on a US east coast location with a name that could be repeated each time it was said ,...... It's up to you Plymouth, Plymouth ,.............. That could work Time for some head scratching methinks
5.
I'm imagining a 'Great Escape'-type ruse where you smuggle in a dwarf in a dummy 8X10 who then nicks loads of booze from the cellar while you're doing the gig. You haul the dwarf and the booze out along with the cab. Brilliant, eh? Unless of course the dwarf drinks the booze during your set, in which case all you'll have to show for it is a pissed dwarf. And who can honestly say they've never had that happen of a weekend? I certainly can't.
Ed to ad !!! You would need part of the the 8x10 to produce a bit of noise , so may end up with a deaf pissed dwarf
6. Thanks Skol for the feedback , much appreciated , I too barely watch tv any more and try to get a couple of hours music/ practice / production in most nights but I do go out a couple of nights a week , in fact I am at the pub now, well , at Alton towers hotel while mrs lurks and the girls are doing stuff in the sleepover room , so no lappy tonight
7. Zoom b9 is an audio interface and works OK , but is a bit tricky with levels and playback and the like , defo have a go with using it as you can plug any analogue instrument into it and record it , though it is a bit light on mic level IIRC....no preamp stage the background noise is a bit high , and it will throw a few things at you ,I think latency was inconsistent and had me doubting my playing skills at one point , but , I recorded my first few goes using one . I did move on to a simple focusright scarlett 2+2 and have been really inspired with it , so simple , and has felt a lot easier , but there is NO reason not to try your hand with the Zoom , go for it , and remember it is a composition competition, it matters not what your entry consists of , just present it , poem, song , instrumental , instrumental poem , it all counts , and to be honest , the most important thing to me was the deadline. It removed the 'one day I will do this' thinking and got me into a 'I will do this now' approach . good luck and welcome 30 years ago I KNEW i could write stuff , now, I am just starting to learn how to do it and I love it .
8.
How I loved it and how I regret giving away that little 8inch record. You had to turn it over in the middle just as it was getting exciting. .
Well I wouldn't call 8 inches a record ....
Hey, I've just had an idea for making a bit of money for the BC coffers. We could do a nudie BC calender! What d'you reckon girls (and guys?).
Unfortunately my 7 inches are a little flat nowadays , I have heard of a member who has a 12 incher but doesn't use it as a rule ...... Taxi ......
9. I thought you were off to bed an hour ago I thought I would just remind everyone of the availability of a thread for the posting of pics before there are a dozen 'official' photo hosting opportunities
10. There is a thread that was created to be a photo journal of the the relay, that would be the best place to focus the images of its journey I would have thought .
11.
I occasionally listen to stuff that people post but 95% of the time it's just not music that appeals to me. What I see happening on the recording forum is just a lot of backslapping; it's little more than a mutual appreciation society IMO. On the odd occasion somebody does say something less than positive they are invariably greeted with a sneery "well let's hear some of your stuff" response, as if the only way you can possibly have an opinion about anything posted is if you write & record stuff yourself.
I think Skol answered this quite well , I have never seen any animosity in there and only ever people trying to each other develop their skills, maybe a bit of backslapping , but it helps individuals build their confidence in writing ,recording and production techniques, while sometimes the results don't quite work out to commercial production levels , I can start to appreciatte what goes into it and maybe pick up some ideas and skjills on the way . It is a great place , no less because of the selfless way that members who know their stuff very generously help to pass it on .
To start having a go at the members who aren't interested & are happy just to play a bit of bass & talk about their gear, favourite players etc. seems a little unfair to me and is an attitude unlikely to attract many "casual observers" into the recording section IMO.
I do get a little nervous when it becomes a point of order that members should be made to feel that it is their duty to spend their time in the section , but I do think the odd bit of encouragement to help them find their own way is very welcome. 49 votes as at this post is a brilliant response so thanks to all .
12. well done Donald , has it moved on now then ?
13. I haven't written anything for our band , but if I did , I would probably try to sketch out and rough record the entire arrangement. That said I reckon they would all then do a job of it and get it to a workable number. With this months composition entry , Ray our warbler played a bit loose with some of the lyrics , but it went well , one take , had fun doing it and as a result we will do something again. If it was a serious vision of a song , lyric and arrangement I am not sure how 'precious' it might become , I could imagine there might be times when a writer/performer knows exactly how the finished article should sound and be a tad dismissive of creative input. still , we will see what transpires , Rhythm guitar suggested using this months song as a soundcheck number after Ray played it to him
14.
Some great entries and hard to pick a winner for me, went for Lurks in the end as I love blues and I thought it suited the pic well. Skol's/Urb's was the usual awesome quality track, loved the production and mix, loved quite a few this month the standard is getting better each month. I got a vote and I think from the comment above it was from MB1 and I can die a happy man to be even mentioned in the same sentence as Barney and J.C.Clarke. Cheers MB1
Cheers Stephen , I really appreciate it , it is brilliant the way a bit of encouragement by way of a vote and a kind word just helps the confidence and keeps you keen for the whole learning process . I still can't make my mind up yet I'll try again tonight .
15. great tag line Dad , and of course a great and worthy cause
16. I do have the odd issue with uploading and signing in occasionally , don't panic
17.
The SP cabs only have the max output of a half the speakers you are paying for, so pretty much disregard them. Tried a latest generation Bass terror 500 and they seem to have sorted the headroom thing.
Ah yes but in the overiding scheme of things SWMBO thinks the combo is pretty well......pretty , this means that I wont get the grief of having a rig set-up or my old fender b25 in the house . But I am a bit loathed to fork out on that basis alone , I realise the isobarik is not efficient, but somehow I have to work out if it is efficient enough.
18. I have uploaded a new mix, so many apologies to the kind souls who commented on the original , they were much appreciatted but i think the new one is blended together better .
19. Cheers OldG , I found the tool and have pretty much done the chopping and stitching , now to find some sounds to make it work .
20. I am new to this stuff , and I guess the recordist was too , but I think I can learn much more from what needs sorting out on these kind of stems, for my own skills in recording and mixing , by identifying the mistakes of others IYSWIM , not to say I would do much better myself , but the chance to get the feel of what you can and can't do with sounds , and the quality they need to be in the first place is a great experience. it focuses the reality starkly with the expectation.
21. <p sab="1998">Found it <img alt="" class="bbc_emoticon" height="20" src="http://basschat.co.uk/public/style_emoticons/default/cool.png" title="" width="20" /></p>
22.
You could use the 'Comping' features of the DAW [they all do it in one way or another] great for this kind of stuff - Just another way for getting a good performance together out of existing material, before getting into the nitty gritty of the sound clean up. This way you are keeping the original Drummers input into the band in some kind of way - Rather than just outing him completely. Although not always possible of course....... Reaper Studio One You get the idea etc..... Garry
Cheers Garry , I think I will have to put a few phrases together how I like them then do a copy paste thing , I was hoping to split the actual tom hits from the track, I can ID them , but chopping each one out just seems a total pain , as I will also have to keep them in the right time space . I will have a look for the auto chop that Si has eluded to , or overdub , but I didn't want to do that .
23. aha , but I guess that mans I have to chop the entire drum track to seperate the toms , and that is the bit that sounds a bit daunting
24.
Wish I had time to do this one now OK for all those Reaper users out there, you can replace drums using the built in gate and any midi firing drum tool (or even Reasampler and a drum wav you like):- If you did this once for each drum in the kit you can get as medieval as you like to filter the drums before the gate and run off each new drum kit item to get totally clean drums to add back to what is there or replace it altogether....
Wow , that has helped a few pennies drop Simon , I love it . That has given me a few processing ideas , what they come out is another thing altogether , but while the snare and kick have now come alive the timing is awkward for the Toms, but will give it a go.
