I can respond to both of your points by saying that, in the musical circles I move in, music isn't shared as notation, nor is the theory behind it discussed to any great degree. This approach won't work for everyone - I get that - but it works just grand for me.

If the guitarist missed that he was playing it wrong, I suspect he isn't as natural or skilful as you give him credit for...
