How good is your Music Theory/Reading?
uncle psychosis replied to lowdown's topic in General Discussion
14/15. Didn't know Rallentando.
Quite surprised that someone who got the other questions right didn't know that! -
All my basses are different and need different strap lengths. So the ones I play most have their own straps. The ones that I play rarely don't. Edit - I'm a big fan of Neotech Mega Bass Straps. Really comfy and great with a heavy bass.
+1 on the Neotech. I've got two Neotech straps, wouldn't consider buying any other straps now.

The main reason to get a 5 string is so that you have more notes available without shifting position, not for the extra five notes. For example if you're playing the D on the 10th fret of the E string then you have easy access to two different fifths: a higher one at the 12th fret on the A string or a lower one at the 10th fret on the B string. Having both these notes available in a single position means you have a lot more possibilities. Personally, I don't need that extra flexibility so I stick with four strings. Other people feel differently. There's no right or wrong, really. Lots of people get very heated about this but its just down to personal preference and need.

Yamaha best bass on the market

Love that blue one Smudge---is it a custom paintjob? -
Wow. That's awesome.

You have been given £700 for pedals only. What next?
uncle psychosis replied to ChunkyMunky's topic in Effects
For bass I don't need anywhere near £700 worth---tuner, OD, maybe a synth occasionally. For guitar I'd get a tuner, a jumbo tonebender, a RAT, a lighter OD, and blow the rest on an outrageously awesome tremolo pedal. Perhaps two---one for the stutter sounds and another for the amp-like stuff. -
Thanks Si. How much extra space is there in the bag? Would I be able to chuck in a chunky strap and a couple of cables?
I've just ordered a Warwick Rockboards Solo, they essentially look exactly like Pedaltrain Nano, but for a few pound less. I'm assuming exactly same factory etc. Will report back, I also have a Pedaltrain Nano that I can compare it directly to. Si
Have been tempted by these, will be interested to see your review. The pedaldecks look good but the cases are too expensive and unless you can beat pedaltrain on price I think you're going to struggle.

How good is your Music Theory/Reading?
uncle psychosis replied to lowdown's topic in General Discussion
Flute is my first instrument and I used to play a lot of jazz on it so my sight reading (on treble clef) and music theory is really good. My problem is that I've never bothered to learn bass clef, and I've never played bass in a band that required me to read. So from a bass point of view my reading is awful. -
Right, seeing as this seems to be turning into a generic metal thread: Anyone care to recommend me some metal? I absolutely love the Deftones and I really don't like cookie monster vocals. Those are your criteria. Go!

Curses, Fretmeister beat me to it.

So is it just a Klon with a clean blend or is there more to it than that?

Gigging Jazz type bass - where do I start?
uncle psychosis replied to tonewheels's topic in Bass Guitars
Pretty much anything in that price range will be a great instrument. Make a day trip of it and head to a specialist bass shop and try lots. It'll be fun (and probably expensive). -
I find the distinction somewhat moot - is there such a thing as a great "bassist" who cannot compose good lines ?.
There's little guarantee that the great orchestral bassists are also good composers.
oh dear, seams like i missread one of the controls of one of them…
Easy done, they're tiny

Like many other people commonly described as "great players" he is in a band that I find utterly unlistenable. I've never been one for listening to music purely to admire the technique so I don't really have much opinion on his skills.
-
i doubt theyd keep the blend circuit if they werent using it. That or they both have the other control as an internal pot.
Don't understand. What "other" control? Both of them have identical controls from what I can see. Mix, Attack, Level, Comp.
Is the Harley Benton pipe bomb the same effect with a different name, or does it differ in some way? http://www.thomann.d...p_pipe_bomb.htm EDIT: No, it isn't. Knobs are different, and the shape of the enclosure is different. At least. It certainly isn't a rebadge.
Given the rather unique design I'd be amazed if the internals weren't identical.

de afwerking mk4-4++ - blablas has that building itch again
uncle psychosis replied to blablas's topic in Build Diaries
Wow, incredible work. What's the fretboard radius? Looks really flat? Also, how do you go about adjusting two truss rods so that they work evenly? Really impressive stuff. -
Last time I looked there were about eighteen thousand second hand ibanez basses for sale here. They don't seem to hold their value all that well - if I was buying an ibanez it would definitely be second hand, even the high end ones are fairly cheap used.

One tiny patch of carpet on the bare wooden stage...
uncle psychosis replied to Dom in Dorset's topic in General Discussion
...and the drummer sticks his kit right in the middle.
Unless I'm missing some kind of joke , the carpet is there for that exact purpose. Drumkits tend to slide away when you play them unless they're on a rug or piece of carpet. -
I think it's good to have a few patches setup for specific songs etc and the way you can adapt them is superb. The only thing I wish it had was an AUX in for home practice.
It doesn't have a dedicated aux in but if you connect it to your PC via USB then I'm about 99.9% certain you can get the PC to use it as an audio output device and play mp3s or whatever through it.

The amp sims are very usable. I haven't noticed any tone suck but I've always used mine direct to desk and I'm no tone snob. You could use it like an amp head but you would need a power amp too. There's a really useful thread about doing this over at Talk Bass. http://www.talkbass.com/threads/zoom-b3-as-preamp.936505/

Do you compromise "your sound" for a decent mix with band?
uncle psychosis replied to Iheartreverb's topic in Effects
Personally speaking I would have no interest working with someone who was more concerned with what they sound like than what the whole band sounds like. A band has to be more than the sum of its parts.
