Wot, no new Beatles film and album thread
uncle psychosis replied to PaulWarning's topic in General Discussion
I saw the film the other week and really enjoyed it, and I say that as someone who is quite cynical about the whole Beatles phenomenon. For me the early years is the really interesting part of the story so it was cool to focus on that rather than the "not speaking to each other recording on their own" later years. I also saw Supersonic recently and despite not being particularly into Oasis thought it was really interesting. Oasis may not be everyone's cup of tea but the story of how a bunch of lads from a council estate went from nobodies to one of the biggest bands in the world in a period of about 18 months is a fascinating one. -
Hip hop... there's actually a lot of good stuff!
I tried to post some stuff from the seminal first Jazzmatazz album but it's one of those that seems to have been blocked from Youtube. Some of the later volumes are still available on there, but IMO they don't quite have the impact of the first.
I'd agree with that - Vol. 1 is by far the best. Despite liking hip-hop one of the criticisms I'd have of it as a genre is that the number of artists who have consistently produced lots of great stuff is really small - for me it's at its best when the artists are doing something new, which is why Guru revisiting jazzmatazz a few times didn't really work for me. That said, Guru is responsible for a lot of other classics so maybe he's proving me wrong anyway :-D -
Fantastic!!! I already have listened to a few of those but there's some there I never even heard of, thanks! Spotify session coming soon
Cool, enjoy. Some of those are a bit much for me (the full on gangsta stuff is a bit out of my comfort zone) but the majority of those would appear in most "best of the genre" lists which is why I suggested them. My personal favourite out of that lot is probably the Gang Starr stuff. The MC is a guy called Guru who also released a record called Jazzmatazz which I think you'd like - it's basically a live jazz band with hip hop production and rapping. -

Missed this thread before... I wouldn't class myself as a huge hip-hop fan but the good stuff is absolutely immense. Classic records worth checking out: Nas - Illmatic* Gang Starr - Moment of Truth* Talib Kweli - Reflection Eternal* Dan Le Sac / Scroobius Pip - Angles* Cypress Hill - Black Sunday Roots Manuva - Run Come Save Me Snoop Dogg - Doggystyle Dr Dre - The Chronic Eric B and Rakim - Paid In Full* De La Soul - Three Feet High And Rising* A Tribe Called Quest - People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm* Mos Def - Black On Both Sides NWA - Straight Outta Compton* The ones with *s should be in every record collection IMO. -
There's dreary moodiness indie rock and there's happy dance indie rock. There is a difference between Peace and Two Door Cinema Club. Don't let BBC Radio 6 (I didn't even know there was a 6) be the indicator of all things indie.
You should check out 6music, its brilliant. Anyone who plays bass guitar will definitely find several shows on it that they like. Its by far the most diverse music station that broadcasts nationally in the UK.
Maybe I just dont get all this thing about looking nonchalant and not engaging with the crowds
There was this one guy who went by the name of Miles Davis. I can't remember which Indie band it was he played in but I heard that he behaved like that too. Dreadful musician, could barely play a note.

Personally I don't like reverb on bass but I'm a big fan of the Digitech Polara on guitar.

The most memorable Thing Ed Sheeran has done is write what is quite possibly the worst lyric that has ever been committed to record. "They say I' m up and coming like I'm f***ing in an elevator" Dear Ed, kindly get back in your elevator, close the doors, and go hide in a basement somewhere. Ta.

Well regarded Digitech distortion pedal, pretty versatile and built like a tank. http://digitech.com/en/products/sc-2 £30 posted in the UK ***SOLD*** No box but it does come with the two different bases (one velcro, one rubber) and the stomp guard thing to stop you changing settings.
Well, it is a thread for people who appreciate MKs and DS music, so not sure why you read through it and felt the need to put a downer on it. There are quite a few bands I have no time for, so I avoid them, and threads relating to them.
Unfortunately the OP didn't see fit to add a warning to the thread title for those of us with taste. :-P

Can't stand them. Awful, awful band. I'd happily never hear them again. The only good thing about them is that they're aptly named. Bet you're all glad you know that.

Bassists you like in genres/band you don't
uncle psychosis replied to Barking Spiders's topic in General Discussion
If I don't like the band, why would I like listening to the bassist? I don't listen to individual instrumentalists in isolation. -
With two pedals? Just try them both ways. It would have taken less time than writing the post to ask! ;-)

Science proves the bassist is vital to the band
uncle psychosis replied to lownote's topic in General Discussion
Judging by my travels around the internet bassists are certainly the best at self congratulation... -
If you're going to the hassle of packing up the bass for a courier anyway you might as well take responsibility for booking the courier too---that way you can pick a reputable company and arrange a time and place that suits you for it to be picked up. You also lessen the risk of the classic paypal not received scam. As a buyer, if the seller says "you can arrange your own courier but I'm washing my hands of all responsibility" then that's a massive red flag to me. The seller is the one that has to pack it up securely: if they're not going to take responsibility for its safe arrival then frankly I don't trust them to do a good job packing it. I avoid these sellers and will take my money elsewhere. So as a seller: either ship it yourself or don't ship it full stop. Shipping it and shifting responsibility for its safe arrival onto someone else is a nonsense.

I'm a bit of an EHX fanboy but I think it sounds pants A massive disappointment for me.
I think you need to try a lot more basses first before spending any money. Given the sums being mentioned you could have pretty much anything you want so long as it isn't a super-rare vintage bass or something that's once been owned by someone famous (or some of Jens Ritter's more "out there" creations). So take a few days out and go and visit Bass Direct in Warwick and The gallery and Andy Baxter in London (for starters) and go and play as many different basses as you can get hands on.
^^^^ this, in spades.

E bay...where have all the bargains gone?
uncle psychosis replied to theplumber's topic in General Discussion
10% fees on eBay is extremely reasonable in my opinion. There are lots of reasons for sellers to get annoyed at ebay, the fees is not one of them. -
Number #3 in the series...why buy a roadworn bass??
uncle psychosis replied to BaggyMan's topic in General Discussion
Why buy a red bass? Or a black one for that matter? -
Is anybody getting bored of "reliced" instruments?
uncle psychosis replied to prowla's topic in Bass Guitars
I find relics a bit boring. But then again I also find Sunburst a bit boring too. It's just another finish option, if you don't like it don't buy one. Not quite why people get quite so upset about it. -
Neotech Mega Bass Strap. I've had all the back saving straps, the Neotech is the best. I have 4 of them now!
This. Won't use anything else now.

Pub Gigs, where is it all going?
uncle psychosis replied to Phil Starr's topic in General Discussion
At the risk of offending, I'm not sure that the demise of the pub band (as I see them, anyway) is necessarily a bad thing. Most of the "pub covers" bands that I see are, frankly, pretty dreadful. Too loud, no sense of dynamics, singing songs that are inappropriate for the singer's range, lurching from one style to another as little more than karaoke with instruments. Yes there are exceptions but I'm not sure there are enough exceptions to sustain it. All of the best cover bands that I've seen in recent years are those that put their own identity into the music - a duo of acoustic guitar and singer with cajon that had the dance floor at a mate's wedding filled all night playing everything from Abba to Bruno Mars to The Clash and another covers bands doing all the usual stuff but using their own arrangements in a soul style. So yeah, rock karaoke might be dying but great live music is still out there, you just need to try a little harder to find it. For those of us who have never been into "mainstream" music (try finding a band down the dog and duck who'll play Sonic Youth or Sun Ra) this is nothing new. You just have to look harder to find your fix. :-)
