1. Yes apols for the side track Martin, looking forward to this coming to fruition. Peter
2. Mersea Island: Colchester: Nuff said?
3.
Good edumacated guess but nope. Tho the guy building it does originally come from Colchester, but that's highly irrelevant to everything really!
With respect Merton no he doesn't. He's a Merseaite and there's a whole world of difference believe me. I err.... grew up with his Mum (who's actually 3 or 4 yrs younger than me)
4. Thank you all. I'll maybe take some good photo this weekend to show what a special bass this one is. I was selling because I wasn't using it. Now the money would come in handy to be honest. Studenthood is long and income meagre. This really is value for money given the quality, stunning and fairly rare finish and the tone. Ask Joe (Toasted) what it sounds and plays like Given the above change of circumstances I would consider some interesting basses thrown in with cash too. Pedro
5.
Dave's rig is a BFM Omni 15 TB isn't it? The BFM website reckons it can be built with or without a tweeter for bass use. Bear in mind that the 3-way crossover will be cutting some of the higher end of what the midrange driver is capable of producing, so a post crossover tweeter switch will make the rig sound duller than one without a tweeter. A
Dave's new rig is a home designed Neo 2 x 12" with, if memory serves me correctly one tweeter and one mid range horn. It has a crossover built from individual components and compared with every other cab I've heard, in a real world comparison it's tops the lot, by a significant margin. In that list of cabs would be my EA's (still very good), Bergs and Alex's own. The cab is a real world beater but Dave isn't in the business of making them for a living sadly. Peter
6.
A couple of years ago me and a mate had a chance to play with a couple of high quality crossovers (4 bands of 48dB/Octave, which we cascaded to make a pair of 96dB/Octaves - virtually a brick wall of crossover!) We found that these frequency bands are where the majority of the 'recognition' of the tone comes from. Obviously, that's not all there is to it (rhythm and lead guitar go from about 100Hz up to 5kHz or even higher, vocals range from maybe 200Hz with overtones and breath sounds all the way up to about 10kHz etc.), but the bulk of the tone comes from these bands. Interestingly, we also found that for most bass players, even when slapping and popping, there's nothing really useful going on above 5kHz. The Marcus Miller kind of brightness goes up to around 7-8kHz, but how many people need that? It does make me wonder why so many amp makers fit tweeters that go all the way up to 20kHz when that top octave is totally unnecessary, and the top 2 octaves are pointless in the vast majority of cases. It's something Alex Claber and I agree on - a good midrange driver should give you all the top end you'll ever need. A
I think you need to speak with Dave Perry. He's living proof (and his home build cab totally tonally awesome including mid drivers tweeter and crossover) that the above isn't necessarily the case Pedro
7. Preaching to the converted here
8. Price drop to £2k for Polling Day
9. I'm surprised that this is up for sale so quickly Rich Having owned active Fenders in the past I can't help wondering if you're not going to regret this. Here's me wishing I still used 4 strings
10.
I think this was mine for a while so i can attest to just how nice it is. Really 'playable' and great depth of tone
It is indeed 'that bass' The 3EQ U retro hasn't diminished the clarity, playability or depth of tone. It has however given the option of adding mids to it as well. Pedro
11. A bump from the very bottom to the very top. This really is an immense Lt Ed bass. Pedro
12. Together with the one of Scoop, this is my favourite, happy bassmen: That's it, til the next one. Pedro

15. Just a quick reply to say what a great weekend Linda and I had. Thanks go to Alan and Dave for doing all that work and to everyone who made it such a fun weekend. I've got some photos to post and will when I have a spare minute.
16. A gentle Spector sized bump.
17. I'd like to thank everyone for their kind comments If anyone is interested they're welcome to visit and try it out. Peter
18. He's probably an evil deviant who deserves public humiliation and a good flogging. Or maybe he forgot? It wasn't me btw
19. Hiya all Bass Chatters, I've been a bit quiet of late but for good rreason. New lady in my life, moved, very involved in my 2nd work placement, taken up motorcycling again having thought 'that's it' 3 years ago (that's what you get for falling for a biker). Life's good and less BC for me is about having more 'life' i.e. a good thing I'm still playing and far from having over 20 basses as of old only one bass gets a look in nowadays, my Status Empathy 5 with 15mm spacing. It's so right for me that Alan (Skelf) is making me a headless Ghallus with the same spacing. So my rather special NS5 Lt Ed is up for sale. It has a John East U Retro fitted to add tonal range in comparison to the original Spector unit. It is in great condition and is rather special (ask a few who've played it). I've borrowed Alanbass1's pics to get the thread started but will add my own in a bit. The bass comes with a Spector hard case, a Comfort Strapp and two new sets of Newtone strings with a tapered B. The Spector Limited Edition Redwood Burl NS-5XL is crafted with 75-to-100 year-old, water-cured redwood burl. The burl rests on a platform of Spector's legendary hand-selected, premium exotic woods: maple for the neck and black walnut for the body wings. Water-cured redwood is harvested from the stumps of redwood trees cut down 75-100 years ago that fell into streams. These trunks were submerged in water the entire time, which washed all the resins out of the wood and replaced them with dissolved minerals. This natural mineral enrichment process is what gives the wood its unique color and density. This natural water curing is very similar to the method that has been used for curing violin woods in Europe for hundreds of years. Unlike these photos it has gold and black knobs. Collection preferred, can deliver a reasonable distance/meet up halfway from Kendal. £2,200 The U-Retro 01 specs can be viewed here: http://www.east-uk.com/ Here's one of the knobs: and one alongside the white LX
20.
Write sold in the title...
Check the thread before pm'ing folk? It takes less effort than writing a pm.
21. So far as I'm aware, this rig is sold, it sold many months ago and the fact that there was a standing joke about people pm'ing me given 2 posts stating this gear was most definitely sold I still got a pm today. So: It's gone!, Like really gone, like sold on like it's not for sale Yes I'm grumpy today
22. I'm not around these parts much nowadays but just a bump to say Spector plus John East is a great bass made better.
23.
Sound advice from robocorpse She does have a high action for a Ric. My 4001 has a seriously low action. It does look in need of a good set up, just be careful that you take it to someone that knows what they are doing with Ric's. The twin trussrod system needs to be adjusted in a specific way, as the rods work differently to other basses.
Errr, maybe they don't. There is two of them on the 4003 though. Many Ric owners use a neck with no relief but I always preferred a slight amount. One flat on each rod usually does it. Peter
