Bass Day UK 2009 (Royal Northern College of Music - Nov 22)
GreeneKing replied to Gary's topic in General Discussion
I must admit to thinking that Yamaha had a completely flawed marketing strategy with the 'Super BB' range at the show. Don't get me wrong I love Yamaha gear but a bolt on passive BB for over £2k just because it's made in Japan?? The standard BB range just aren't different enough and I don't think the name 'Yamaha' on the headstock has ever been that popular however well made these basses are. Expect to see huge discounts as per usual. -
Bass Direct have an offer at the mo: http://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_sp...lists/Home.html 2nd hand price is commensurate with new minus a bit Quite high demand I'd guess so not hugely cheap.

I know where you could get a real 'personal' signature bass for a lot less than that Peter. And it's have an asymmetrically profiled neck without the fancy terminology
-
Yes, once due to the string vibrating against the edge of the bridge. The larger string makes this more likely. Worth a careful look see?
Seriously? At the risk of getting thrown off... it's one thing bitching about the price but another if you know the make and it looks (shall we say) unusual. It deserves a comment to assist potential buyers who may not be so familiar. I would hope that would be the case if I was buying anyway!
+ 1,000. I've definite feelings about what is appropriate for the thread and what should be pm'd and this is very much okay imo. It looks a great bass for little money and the history is coming out because folk are asking reasonable questions. -
I don't see the 'cluttered' thing. I think it looks quite stunning. I do always think that semi acoustic basses almost always fail to achieve what they set out to. Steve (Tayste_2000) may disagree as I saw him jamming with Yolanda with his double Darkstarred DeArmond

Hiya Alex A mighty welcome fine fella
-
I've never heard of them. I wonder if you mean D'Addario?
-
I think that from my perspective all the noise and general cacophony was much, much more than made up for by the event itself, the chance to see people like Yolanda and Nathan play and best of all catching up with old friends. So thanks to Steve, Gary and Pris for an overall great day despite the 'sound control' issues. I feel that if you let the volume put you off going you are missing something very rewarding, that's my thoughts anyway.

In Nigel (Clutterbuck's) defence we were worried that his percussive playing would send us slightly insane as we were next to him. Truth is that wasn't the case, he did a few fairly quiet short demos and one more lengthy one later on on the Enfield stand but he was by no means the culprit at Bass Day. He seemed a bloody nice guy too to be honest. I recognised some guys from last year one of whom was towing his lady around while he slapped everything he could get his hands on. She looked even less impressed than she did last year It wasn't so much the slapping that I and others I've spoken to found oppressive but the combined drone that seems to emanate from everywhere and nowhere. In fact the Bernie slapfest in particular was more subdued that last year, or maybe the drone drowned it out? After about 5 hours I not only had a headache, to be expected, but I also felt physically sick. Maybe it was the classic case of everyone thinking 'ooh it's loud' and turning up their gear to compete, at 30 second intervals?
I also have the bass that Nathan was playing at Bass day for sale at a very special price. See you all again next year ;-) Mark
Mark That was a fine looking and sounding bass. Someone in the audience was talking to Nathan about 36" scale and yet I believe that the BBNE2 is 34" scale according to the spec sheet. Is that right? Peter -
It is the oldest recorded town. Welcome to BassChat from a Merseaite now living 330 miles away. Peter

When some guy in the audience asked Nathan East to do some slap I was close to using some rusty control and restraint techniques to evict him from the theatre

Steve, I was hoping you wouldn't take this as i dig at you in the slightest. You weren't anywhere near my thoughts when I wrote the above and it was great to see you! Please note that by no means everyone who tried a bass came into the above description
Hi everyone, I had a great time at Bassday UK yesterday, my particular highlights being Nathan East, Maurizio Rolli and Poogie Bell Band. I wanted to see if anyone else noticed anything about the trade stands, in that I'm not sure I noticed anyone playing anything with fingers or a pick all day? I have nothing against slap (one of my favourite bass lines: Freddie Washington on 'Forget Me Nots'), and I know that everyone has their favourite "shop licks", having worked in a bass shop. However, after 7 hours milling about, I was thoroughly confused ( and in a small amount of ear related pain). Surely if you're trying to demo a bass, you want to show your customers its full palette (sp?) of sounds? Anyway...just wondering if anyone had any thoughts on this thoroughly gripping issue! Ta.
The 'slapathon' is I feel a sad inevitability of 'Bassday'. Sure there were people who weren't slapping but most of them couldn't even hear themselves play. I don't dislike the concept entirely when it's done well or used appropriately but it seems to me that there's an army of folk (men) who go to bass days to pick up as many basses as possible with no serious intention other than to demonstrate their knuckle to string ability to all within hearing distance or in some cases a long suffering female who is in tow. A typical scenario is: Can I have a go? Yes, the pre-amp is a bit different maybe I can go through it with you? No, I know how it works Okay Then the 'punter' proceeds to do his bit with entirely the wrong tone EQ'd into the bass, twiddles knobs incessantly and puts it down in disgust before moving onto the next stand to repeat a similar process

I caught Nathan East and was blown away. I heard some very positive stuff about you too Adam but sadly missed you although one of my basses saw your masterclass Yolanda Charles was delightful. A great day but much louder, not just the slappers either. If you were the plonker who asked Nathan East to slap put your hand up now I came away GAS free for a change. Very impressed by a prototype two hole P bass active and passive pre amp that John East had designed. Even had it's own 40 Hr rechargeable battery charged through the jack socket and it dropped into passive automatically on low voltage. A clever man is John. The best bit by far was meeting so many familiar faces. -
Plek'd? Fret dressing machine? I thought at least some Lakkies had Lindy Fralin before Lakland pups? My BG did.

I think we have linked to this guy before...
Just a good example of how capitalism works. Nowt wrong with that.
I agree I just choose not to get what I see as 'sucked in' by it all. Yes I've got an AV 62 P RI so not often maybe
