Bob MacKintyre, a real hero When my new Z750 (4) broke down in North London in 1980 a guy came out in a van to help me put a new clutch cable on - one Graeme Crosby no less

It's a real beaut though. Many (nearly 40 yrs) ogo I had a mate that had a Vincent motor in an Egli frame, it was a dog too
3. I think that the 08/09 US Fenders are arguably as good as any Fender ever. I'm really impressed with my 09 American Vintage P. Maybe a 75 American Vintage Jazz might be worth a look? Cheaper than a CS but still a lot more than a American Standard.
4. You could always give this guy a quick email: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ROSEWOOD-THUMB-REST-...2QQcmdZViewItem I've got 2 of his ebony rests and they are very well made indeed, he'll probably knock you up a custom one I suspect.
5. I'm loving 'Quite Firm'. If I could play that I'd be more than chuffed!
6. Sadly it's the nature of eBay in particular that people have learnt, from horror stories like the one's raised on here, to be suspicious of other's motives. I was chatting to a guy who owned a 4001 CS certificate but sadly no bass. Being in the opposite boat and having the bass with no certificate we checked serial numbers but sadly it was for another one. I suggested that I'd buy it from him as the wrong certificate is better than none (misguided thought possibly). He quite fairly said no and that he's give it for free to the owner of the bass if he could find them. I offered to put this on here and all the relative forii but he I think became suspicious that I was trying to obtain it by ulterior means and stopped communicating. Sad that people aren't more trusting I suppose. So if you have a Rickenbacker 4001 Chris Squire and no certificate I may know who has it
7. Thanks I did but I appreciate the pointer. I need to take the bass apart and see what room is in the cavity. A separate battery box is a neater approach I feel. From previous work with my Bob Glaub I suspect that a side mounted jack is the way to go, unfortunately it probably means a long barrel type that I dislike as they have a greater propensity to fail imo. I'll disassemble the bass and have a gander. Edited to say that I've ordered a 3 hole plate and we'll see how it goes. Looking forward to having a Jazz with a difference, 4 controls and a jack
8. Having acquired a new Sadowsky Pre with VTC I'm planning how I'm going to put it into the Maruszczck. It's not that I feel the bass particularly needs it, more that I hear so many good things about this pre-amp and I like fiddling. So obvious way ahead is to rout a battery compartment and fit a side mounted jack to give me the 4 holes that I need on the plate. The battery may fit in the main compartment - I haven't checked yet. I'd love to keep the jack where it is, is a 5 hole plate available? Can't find one anywhere. Of course the holes might turn out too close together anyway.

10. Good prices methinks.
i am one of the old school...really old!!
Me too, very old, but how is an HRD a SRX500?
13. I've owned a 5HS and a 4HH together and the tone on the HS was very different to the HH, much more earthy and 'woody' sounding. If it had of been the other way around I'd probably still have it as 5 strings isn't for me. Didn't they put the 4EQ into any other bass, like a Ltd Ed?
14. I just bought an onboard Sadowsky pre-amp from Chris, item exactly as described and he pulled out the stops when his lovely lady failed him a little Cheers Chris Peter
15. Very nice indeed Alan
16. Mistake? I don't think so Mikey, more a case of daring to be different Looking good.
17. That certainly is very interesting. A different design to the modern basses but the quality of build shows through.
18. I'm not sure that resale value is a good enough reason that we should stick to the big F
19. And we're glad to have you here. As the 1st person to respond tradition has it that you have to send me a locally made delicacy. Sadowsky will be fine Seriously, good to see you here. Peter

And there was me thinking that the SRX500 was a Yamaha.
21.
It was the overall feel of the bass and especially the neck that gave me that impression. The finish of the neck mostly. I generally like high gloss finished necks and have quite a couple, but this Maruszczyk really felt like plastic to my hands, I didn't like the feel one bit. The fretwork was impeccable, the woodwork was nice and the finish had been applied very tightly and neat, but it was the feel of the neck that disappointed me. The look of the black blocks has in no way influenced my opinion for that matter.
Hmmm... my Elwood has a vintage tint high gloss neck that I've never thought of as 'plasticky' it just looks good and plays well. The headstock goes to satin which is interesting. As a contrast the nitro cellulose finish on my new P is similar but a bit 'sticky' at the moment. I'm hoping that will go as I use it. Interesting stuff, I'd still recommend them as I don't 'see' any of the 'cheap' and 'plastic' characteristics myself but it a very subjective thing.
22.
I came very close to being insanely jealous there - but as it won't have a head and is missing a string I shall just be very very jealous.
Piezo bridge, single pup, ebony board, neck thru, purple heart lines..... Haven't got around to the facing wood yet. I love the way Alan's latest headless creation has turned out.
23.
I wasn't disagreeing with you Pete!
I know Tom I was just developing your thread, not contradicting it Peter
24. I have a 4 string Ghallus fretless headless on order
25. I'm surprised that you had the impression that the overall feel of the bass was rather 'cheap'. What does that mean exactly I wonder? Could the painted blocks have 'coloured' your impression? Mine is well put together and well finished and uses top quality hardware. The wood is worked cleanly and there's no rough edges or areas of finishing that disappoint. The fretwork and neck are pretty perfect to my eye and feel. It's a one piece Northern ash body and isn't light. The passive electrics are behind a sumptuously chromed plate and the pickguard is a better quality than most. I'd be surprised if the guy brought a dodgy one to a bass gathering. If anyone's around Kendal and interested in these they're welcome to give it a 2nd opinion. Peter Edited to add: I agree that painted blocks isn't very inspiring though
