Well, maybe but as far as I can see it's really just a very nice EQ that has been tweaked to make a bass sound at it's best, so I'd set it and leave it. I can understand taking up 2 boss-sized pedal spaces with something like a EHX BMS, but for something that's 'set and leave' like the tone-hammer it is rather large.
The Tonehammer is more than just an EQ though with DI, pre amp, sweepable mids and an overdrive circuit.
2. I'm not normally a fan of red basses but that is an exception. I love the pup covers. A stunning example of an already stunningly good brand imo.
3.
Well some have put preamps in there basses but this means routing...But no an external preamp i mean...Is the tone hammer that big?? Does it matter, its no bigger than an effects pedal or unit....
I'd describe the Tone Hammer as quite small. I agree re the rig comments entirely. Leave the bass be until you are certain you need to modify it methinks. I've put BasAss's on basses and can't honestly say I've noticed a great amount of difference. My 62 AV RI P has a bit of bent tin and sound really rather special to my ears.
4. Yep it really does seem that Fender US are getting their corporate act together with the 08/09 series... This is a bargain for a new one.
5.
Historically Geddy Lee fooled most Rush fans into thinking his 70s Jazz was a 4001, particularly on Moving Pictures but allegedly on a good few other Rush albums too. Alternatively there's this approach: Jon.
You know, on 2nd viewing I'm really liking that.
6.
Personally, I'd have found a way! Looks like I'll be spending most of next week in Lowestoft, waiting for the weather to improve enough to allow us to go diving. If you fancy a beer and a chat PM me!
Being an East coast lad who does most of his diving in the SW I can't say that Lowestoft appeals very much Mind much the same can be said for Cumbria
7.
Don't shoot me down too quickly - I know almost nothing about this kind of thing. COuld you fit active pickups onto it, and make a custom lead to go from your bass into a home-made pedal on the floor, which would house the preamp circuit? Or would the cable lose too much signal?
You still need to find a space to put the battery for the active pups among the passive electrics. Maybe rout a battery box?

Merton is your man and I'm sure he'll be along. Mine has been brilliant albeit as a backup £185 head.
9. Hiya Mario Maybe the quest to make your Jazz sound like a Ric isn't the way to go? Given that they are very different basses each with their own strengths would it make sense to just improve the tone of the Jazz to something you like more and have that variety? The J-Retro is great or for a very different yet tonally comprehensive approach you could try the ACG02 that slots straight in.
10. As Alex said, active EMGs are just different. I'd say try some Villex pups for the nearest passive equivolent. Otherwise outboard and things like Aguilar Tone Hammer, MXR M-80 D.I.+ or Bassbones may help. My P sounds great passive and I'm loath to put flats on it as I originally intended as I don't want to change the existing tone. My MXR M-80 gives me a chance to apply some active EQ and that is mostly mids to be honest, that and the passive tone on the bass gives me all I need.
11. Excellent stuff, an update on all the builds would be interesting, blow by blow. Any photos?
12. If you get a slightly oversize allen key and file a gentle taper on it until it taps in it should remake it's own hexagonal socket. I've done this a couple of times with various square and hex sockets.
13.
Are you selling the GB's............. ???
http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=55054&hl=
14.
Blimey, that's a nice collection. I'm off to see if I've got 3 and a half grand shoved down the back of the sofa.
If you find it I think it's actually mine Russ, I seem to remember losing it somewhere
15. That WAS quick!
16. I actually expected something more extreme like loadsa colour and some pink fur Nice one.
17.
My bass sits on my right hip and doesn't contact with said belt.
+1
18. And I hope you used a genuine 'Duck Dunn' pipe cleaner or those low mids will be suffering Glad its sorted
19. Have a great time Mikey, looking forward to seeing the end results! Peter
20. So that's active pups and passive electrics then Mark?
21. That does look rather the business, and Mikey's bass too!
22. I would say that the Pyramids have less zing but wouldn't say they were too thumpy, more mellow and old school. They have a great flexi-feel to and seem consistent for a long time. I love them and have tried nearly all.
23. Final touch, the bass has holes in the plate and , as I later discovered screw holes for a rest. I'm surprised one wasn't fitted or supplied but it would have been black plastic anyway. I've fitted an ebony rest in place, purely decorative don't you know With the bits the bass still comes in at only 9lbs.
24.
And how do you get your grass to be so green? Or is it my monitor?
We have something abundant up North called rain
25. Sad to hear this has to go Tom. This is a beauty and Tom is a star. I'd bump the thread but it's at the top already
