Peter - I did explain that this might be the case when I re-opened the thread. If you want to discuss it further, please PM me. Thank you.
That'll teach me to read the tread fully

I'm aware that there are a fair few deleted posts on this page including one that I felt was a non contentious one of mine and another that quoted my original post. Odd? If your post is deleted wouldn't it be nice to be told why? Peter

I have somewhere stuck into my head that so far as classic tone goes a Fender Jazz is a defining instrument. In my quest for a jazz I've owned a few both Fender and Sadowsky, US, CIJ, Marcus Miller, Lakland, Metro and 'allparts'. All of them were good but none stuck around for that long. I saw Tom's (AREA) Maruszczyk Elwood and thought it looked stunning and worth a shot. Build quality wise it's at least at Sadowsky standard with a one piece ash body and high quality hardware. The fit and finish are great and the neck is a real revelation being a slim jazz style and with a zero fret. The action is very low and it's very playable too. Weight wise it's average, certainly no ball buster. It's also completely mint. It's passive with Bass Culture pickups. I love the tone and having played it at two band practices find myself going for the honky bridge pickup sound even when it doesn't suit the song I'll post some photos when I get a chance but there's a couple of shots a few post down on here: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=52281&hl= So, the only issue I have with the bass is that I don't know how to pronounce it's name Any help there would be appreciated.

I've been away for the weekend, I had a great time exploring Northumbria. I've heard some stuff about this thread so I thought I'd pop in and see what all the fuss is about. You know it seems really odd that I read the responses to a professional bass player's post and then read the guys comments that provoked them. I can't find anything but reasonable and level headed discussion from Janek???? The shooting down of perceived 'bass celebs' is a regular pastime on BC and elsewhere. Is that about them or us? All imo of course and the usual restrictions apply. Peter
Who/what are our favourite bands/tunes?
Sadly you are talking to the man with possibly the widest taste in music this side of M6 I'm not very keen on some folk or some C&W and don't much care for 'shouting' metal but other than that..... Maybe some blues, I've an early Fleetwood Mac triple album that I'll work on methinks.

I'm totally pants at listening to a song and working out the notes being played. I'm a little better at sorting the rhythm but that still leaves room for improvement. The internet is to blame as I always end up searching for tab or chord charts and working it out from there. Can anyone who teaches give me some ever so simple song recommendations to practice on. A range from easy to moderate would be good. I need to resist the temptation to go to 'Bassmasta' and develop some skills.

String height / action - I've learned a valuable lesson!
Interesting! I suppose another variable to add in is where you pluck the string. I could honk away over the bridge pup on a J all day, and not clank or rattle once. Over the neck pup would be a different kettle'o'fish altogether.
I generally play with my thumb on the neck pickup and then run my thumb down the strings. I can get clank if I want it but don't usually unless the volume's a little low and I dig in too much to compensate. I measure by holding a ruler alongside the string, depressing it and see how much it moves - easier than gauging the gap imo. -
One to play or hang on the wall?
GreeneKing replied to bythesea's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Nope I think it's visually stunning. I agree re the neck overkill and think that NT would be nice on an instrument of this price and quality, accepted that attack and sustain is effected to some extent. -
Just to say that Tom is an absolute star. I didn't get to meet him as he's in Germany but he was courteous, honest and a pleasure to deal with. Bass arrived from Germany in less than 2 days too. Outstanding instrument. I think it's the Jazz I've been looking for for many years. Just have to hope my C64S sells now Thanks Tom

I just checked my ACG Harlot at the 12th fret. 2.5mm on the E, 2.0mm on the G. No buzzing or clanking unless I really dig in. -
Wow that is a shock. I remember some great posts of his. I'd like to celebrate that he shone so brightly. Peter

Is it possible to have too many basses?
GreeneKing replied to GreeneKing's topic in General Discussion
Too many at once? Or too many over a period of time? Guilty on both counts, M'Lord. I've been pruning ruthlessly over the last few months. From a peak of 27 (I know, I know) I managed to get right down to 10 ... and now it's gone back up to 11. In all fairness (and see my sig) I'm still trying to sell!
I'm similar, about 22 max down to 7, one for sale, one being built and one incoming. My point is I suppose that I don't reckon the quest for bass happiness ever achieves it fully because it's not about 'the' bass but something different, new, until the next time? -
I don't even like to dwell on how many basses have passed through my sticky mitts over the past 12 years or so. When I visit my Photobucket account it causes me slight embarrassment even though I weeded it a year or so ago. I collected my Harlot in February and it was supposed to be my bass to end my quest. The trouble with the human ego is that if it's allowed it's head it's never satisfied and there's always something around the corner that will provide temporary relief. Until the next time. GAS! My band mates look on in slight bewilderment as I turn up with a different bass on a regular basis. Spector, Spector with ACG 02 Pre, Warmoth Darkstar, Yamaha BB1500A, TRB4P, Overwater, G&L, Warwick Thumb, Rickenbacker....... They say a change is as good as a rest and that's part of the issue here, all my basses sound good and a different tone sometimes sounds better just because it's new. A bit like when someone else plays your bass and it immediately sounds better. Do I notice a difference in tone or playability with each different bass? Yes I do. I know that some practices sound really good and the bass tends to play itself. The Overwater neck is particularly nice. None of my bases fail to do the job though. But, recently I've found myself going back to the ACG I can honestly say it reminds me that it was made for me. Why did I ever pick up anything else? What was I looking for? The action is spot on, the ergonomics are perfect and the neck profile is 2nd to none. The ACG01 tone is sooo rich, full and versatile. I don't use the full range but love to move between a dub sound and a Jazz bark. Visually when I look down at the neck I see a superbly finished and crafted bass and this really does matter. It makes me realise that for me having more basses than cover all the basses (pardon the pun) is actually pointless and that GAS is more about an out of control ego that a search for the right 'one'. I've probably had at least 60 basses pass through my life, so many that I doubt I can remember them all. All the ones I own now are a bit special to me but I definately can't justify them all. I'd still like to find a Jazz bass that fills my expectations I suppose So yes I think you probably can.

GreeneKing replied to wateroftyne's topic in Bass Guitars
Hiya WoT, do you usually raise and lower the pups the commensurare amount when you adhust the action? Is it possible that the neck's not 'choking' but that the strings are too close to the pups? Peter -
Problem is they unscrew when abused but I assume you don't move on stage like I do . I had a set on a Thunderbird, they aren't bad and easy to tighten but I already had like 7 basses with schallers so just replaced them.
Nope I'm a static exhibit Mine are fitted to my thickest strap and are great. I give them a tweek every so often and they seem to stay tight.

My Overwater came with a set of these. They are very high quality and the design is neat and pretty foolproof. There's a spring loaded sleeve that when released forces a ring of tiny ball bearings into an annular groove on the 'button' fitted to the bass. I usually use Schaller, Boston or similar that cost between a tenner and £16. These heavy duty and superbly engineered items are available from Axesrus for £8.25 a set. Another neat feature is that the strap portion is tightened by a small knurled knob, so much easier than finding a thin spanner. They even come with a pair of felt pads - chrome, black or gold. Here's my new ones that arrived today:

If they're the same buy 2nd hand and treat me to the £100 left over ?

I'd vote yes!!
