  1. How about some which went over peoples (or maybe just mine) heads...….? Here's three Pete Briquette of the Boomtown Rats.... took me years to get that one. I think it's an Irish thing where peat is used as fuel and sold in small bricks. Perry Farrell of Janes Addiction...… meant to be equivalent to 'peripheral'. Steve Nieve of Elvis Costello and the Attractions..... meant to be pronounced 'naive'
  2. I discovered them a couple of years ago, and saw them play in London. One of my best ever gigs. Fantastic. It was the hottest day for years (trains were cancelled due the heat) and they still wore the big furry hats😃.
  3. My sister did the same thing...... kept her husbands name after the split due to the children’s names at school etc. Still not changed even though the ‘kids’ are grown up and left home, and she’s been in a relationship with another bloke for a few years.
  4. Having encouraged you to start this thread in the first place, you'll be glad to know I've had the decency to read it (and reply😀)! One thing I've picked up from what you said above - sounds like it's pretty important to know what you vocal range actually is. And it's encouraging to hear you say that you started from nothing at 33!
  5. Not quite what your asking but.......... I tend not to follow whole careers, bit have had that policy for the following artists even if not forever. The Fall (ended by death of Mark E Smith) The Kills (Until first hiatus, didn't pick up after reunion) Goat ("always buy" rule is still in force) Crass (until the split) Pixies (until split, not after reunion) MIA (first few releases)
  6. The supposedly humourless band "Crass" some pretty good names. Steve Ignorant Penny Rimbaud - after the Poet Arthur Rimbaud (Arthur = Half-a Penny) Phil Free N.A. Palmer Eve Libertine Joy De Vivre Pete Wright (OK, there's always one!)
  7. I'll pass on some interview advice from my grandmother, it will probably help in an audition situation too: "Go and watch the interviewer sitting on the toilet" ..... or something like that 😀.
  8. Showaddywaddy had two bass players - but they didn't play at the same time. In fact they had two of everything - drummer, bassist, guitarist, lead singer. This is because they were formed by merging two four piece bands - I think it stopped competing for gigs and gave them instant dep cover. That's why there were always 3 of them doing semi-comical backing vox routines on TOTP.
  9. Post-punk band the Delta 5 had two bassists. To be fair I think one was mainly bassist, the other mainly singer... but still a good excuse for :
  10. It was Ned's Atomic Dustbin...... I think one played the traditional bass role, and the other a kind of lead bass. If I recall correctly at the beginning four of the 5 members considered themselves a bass player, but got it down to two by moving to something else.
  11. In my book it’s bad form to join a band with the intention of ousting or complaining about an existing member. So don’t join. At most give that as a reason for not joining, if that member is not the one you're talking to.
  12. Yes you are right..... that’s why as much as I’d get a buzz from owning, I would not chase ownership.
  13. I probably would get a buzz from owning, say, Dee Dee Ramone's bass. But it would be for the connection not anything to do with instrument quality. And I wouldn't be willing to pay the required cash for it. But if someone offered me a choice of two gifts - A Dee Dee Ramone bass, or to choose a high-end bass with equivalent-cash-value. That's because I don't care much about high level gear, but am a big Dee Dee fan
  14. I guess under my understanding of new wave quite a few of the excellent bass players mentioned above would get pushed into punk or post-punk, perhaps leaving Colin Moulding, Graham Maby and Pete Thomas as new wave. And Foxton maybe. Slippery subject! How about Brian Ritchie of the Violent Femmes?
  15. Cheers....good to have you listening, and do jump in with an entry when you're ready 👍. Meanwhile you can participate as a voter...... IM me if you need any voting recommendations !
  16. This got me confused at work too. I work in a European team and we discussing who would be out on the 24th for the public holiday which is happening in some countries. I remembered your post and (without checking any further, such is the trust I have 😃) started to plan cover etc. Luckily I didn’t get very far before I realised!
  17. Here goes! There are lots of phrases involving pigeons - like pigeon toed and pigeon chest, stool pigeon etc.... and my first notion was a Booker-T style instrumental called "Pigeon Peas". However the riffage went in a different (Crampy) direction so I ended up using all the phrases into a full set of lyrics. Same gear as usual: Studio one DAW, Studio One drum set, Vantage bass, Squier Tele guitar, SM38 mic. Lyrics:
  18. I never think like that.... they do their thing , I do mine. I may steal something from them or “channel” them, but never aspire to be them. If I don’t like it I can avoid doing anything like it future.
  19. I think Sleaford Mods are great too. Vocally and instrumentally. I’m Ok with their methodology on record, but afraid I’m not really sure about the whole “laptop and mic” thing live. To my ears it would sound good with a live bass ( with processing, not a straight bass sound) . Thoughts?
  20. The Fall - "Paintwork" I think it's some kind of home recording, especially as it has a crude drum machine instead of drummer Karl Burns. At about 38 seconds Mark E Smith accidentally taped over some of the tracks for a few seconds. Not sure if the voices heard are what he accidentally taped, or added afterwards to fill the silence.
  21. The Cars - "Best Friends Girl" After the into/verse and into the first chorus - the drummer misses the first snare hit. About 48 seconds or so. I think it's on record (excuse the pun) as being a mistake rather than deliberate.
  22. The Stranglers - "Do Ya Wanna - Death and Night and Blood (Yukio)" I read an interview with drummer Jet Black, who says a fan asked him about a mistake on this. Jet's response was along the lines of "Well spotted, I thought I'd got away with that." It's basically two songs medleyed together. When It switches from the first song into the second song (about 2min30s) the drums are kind of 'out of phase' with rest of the band, but goes back into phase (snare on the 2 and 4) at about 3mins. Given the extremely off kilter drum pattern in the first half of the song, it would be reasonable to assume that the 'mistake' was deliberate. So hats off to Jet for owning up!
  23. @lowdown I did get that error, but I think maximising didn't help. I'll try again later after work.
