  1. I'm not an expert, but I found an "Old Grey Whistle Test" version. The photo evidence suggests hard rock: (and to my inexpert ears I'd say it sounded more like hard rock)
  2. I see your "Joy Division Oven Gloves" and raise you "Nick Cave Dolls"
  3. Of course, you can actually buy them now...….
  4. OK, we can close the ‘worst gig’ part of the thread now.
  5. One of my faves who were at the Ally Pally gig.. I saw them a couple of years ago in London, and did not disappoint.
  6. I just posted this in the 'best gigs' thread. But I reckon it deserves a cross-post here: Unfortunately I don't remember much of it, but I do remember buying two singles by the all-female Swiss band Kleenex. Here's one of them.
  7. Now I have to qualify this. These are the best ones according to my memory. But, recently someone on BC posted a pic of the Au Pairs bassist at Alexandra Palace 1980. I remember going to that all-dayer, but not seeing the Au Pairs. So I just googled the line up. I can't believe there was so many great post-punk bands, and I only remember John Cooper Clarke! I was 15 and went on my own. Here's the line up:
  8. Had these bands actually existed I thinks a fair few would have had a deserved place in this thread:
  9. Some kind of foam I suppose.
  10. This was my gateway track from Punk/New Wave into post-punk: Delta 5 - Mind Your Own Business: As post-punk often does, it has a great bassline.
  11. Great thread. Now, I'm not going to get into a debate about what constitutes post-punk. No siree, not me !
  12. Yes. And exacerbated by their ability to cut through the mix.
  13. Absolutely. He did a perfect Beefheart. The drummer (aahh name eludes me now) did a great job, but could not beat the magic when JF got behind the kit for a bunch of songs.
  14. It was The Royal Festival Hall (and support band was The Fall, one of my other faves!) But around the same time maybe.
  15. Yes, that is how I understand the sentiment "everyone can sing". It is a response to the idea that singing is open only to the innate few. It is saying that there is not a "singing closed door" to anybody (save a very small number of genuinely tone deaf) . It is not claiming that singing ability is 'free' and comes without work.
  16. Best gig: hhhmmm one of these three I reckon: The Magic Band (Post Beefheart) 2002 London Dahka Brahka Couple of years ago London Goat Couple of years ago London Worst: Hard to say but I'll go for Stump, late 80's I suppose. I assume the band played OK, but he soundman forgot to put an audible amount of guitar or bass into the mix
  17. And try explaining this joke to the youngsters these days:
  18. Not sure why, but thinking back to a episode in my music 'career'. A guy I worked with was a drummer, and we liked similar music, so we decided to do music together. After while we got chatting to another guy at work. He had image (and music taste) somewhere between rockabilly and Psychobilly. Turns out he had a decent enough singing voice, a A4 folder full of lyrics and seemed like would have been good on stage. Eventually it turned out that he didn't have a clue about music. He would join in anywhere in the bar, with the expectation that the rest of the band would fall in line. He made ridiculous suggestions about what the players should do (like not playing the D string on the bass). The drummer was a happy-go-lucky type who kind of laughed it off, but I quit. The band eventually ground to a halt - meanwhile I reunited with the drummer in parallel and we formed a decent originals band with my brother and an old uni mate of the drummer. Anyone got any stories of singers who don't know about music... even they had some other good qualities?
  19. I used to like this band when they first emerged. They are Brazilian and sang (or rapped?) in the national language. Bonde do Rolê:
  20. Oh no - this is going to kill your natural instincts and creativity ! Only joking - enjoy the lesson(s) 😀!
  21. Agree with some of the comments about set length - I often see bands whose material I'm not familiar with. 45 mins is fine for that. If they are old faves, then I can go much longer. But then what is the mix of songs? Yes, as others have said, don't play the new album in full - takes time too love all the songs. But what to play from the back catalogue? If it's a festival or multi-band line up then OK, play your greatest hits. If it's your headline gig then give us a good bunch of album track faves in the mix.
  22. For quite a few years the Fall never did a cover - which I used to like about them. Then they did one cover, and after that did loads. Good covers though!
