1.
I'd try the Genz Genz Shuttle 6.2 in either 1x12 or 2x10 variant. Its light and portable, has all the connections you could need (aux in, headphones, DI out, effects loop), modular (head comes off, takes extension speaker). A really good gigging amp which won't break your back. Tone wise it should cover all bases. Default tone is clean and neutral, but thickens up nicely and gradually as you increase the gain - they've designed it deliverately to do this and I love it for getting old school tones.
+100 for this. I got a Shuttle a few months ago and sold my Markbass combo last week.
2. Not quite the same for me re the bass bit but I know what you mean and hope your week gets better. If picking up you bass works for you, then do it. Any diversional therapy is good therapy
3. That appears to be a poll of the 60 most well known bassplayers
4. Update on the Cubase problem. Thanks all, much appreciated. Problem sorted due to buffer size and turning off all the WIFI and other stuff. Playback is perfect. Again, thanks to all who replied.
5. Last couple of replies really helpful guys. Thanks. Didn't realise that stuff like WIFI could cause problems. Help was much appreciated,
6. I just got this from him. "Audio driver is a Realtek HD Audio Manager. Is that any use???"
7.
He probably needs an ASIO driver and hasn't installed one. It's a common problem in 'new' IT audio recording users. In short, his soundcard is not configured for complex recording processes so he needs to upgrade the drivers. ot a big deal but, if you don't know what you are doing, can take hours of what I call 'knobbing about' May be worth finding a local music tech geek to help you out.
Thanks for the tip. I'll pop over shortly (he's living next door) and see how he's getting on increasing the buffer size although as he's a guitarist, I might just find 15 plates of egg & cress sandwiches
8. I'll ask about the soundcard shortly and let you know in the meantime get him to look at increasing the buffer size. Thank so much, K
9. There seem to be a few posts on this thread suggesting that there is so much undiscovered music out there already that it wouldn't really matter if no more new stuff was created as there is loads to still hear as "new" to that person. We'll always discover old "new" stuff and that's great but, I've always been of the opinion that in most cases, music created is due to what the writer has to say at that particular time in their lives and is also influenced by the current state of society at that time. Punk being a prime example. It would be a real shame to lose the musical viewpoint of all those future writers and composers.
10. Our guitarist is using Cubase AI.5 (so he tells me) on a Windows 7 laptop with 6g of RAM. He says that when he records a couple of tracks and plays back, no problem at all. Sounds great. However, when there are 4 or more tracks, he gets loads of crackles, pops and a seriously degraded sound on playback. Any ideas? It's the same when he mutes tracks and just plays back one or two but then of course, they are still actually running but with no sound. Could it be a sound-card problem? Any help or suggestions would be most appreciated. Thanks K
11. It's like any other instrument. Find a good player, and they're good. Find a crap one, and they're crap. So, have a look around for a better keyboard player. Funnily enough, the best one I've played with in a band situation had only been playing a year. He'd been a seriously good, dedicated rhythm guitarist for 20 years and I believe it takes a very good player to fill that role. He was so sympathetic to the songs and was able to bring all his knowledge of harmony etc into his keyboard playing. Fantastic bit of kit too. Korg SV1 with the onboard preamp tube.
12.
...why do you put up with that kind of thing?
Surely if your partner has an issue with what you buy gearwise, there's usually a sensible reason for it, be it space or finance related.
13. Purely from a listening point of view (and despite my advanced years) I look forward to the possibilities that some new band or singer / songwriter is going to come up with something really good that makes me think "great, we're still using the same 12 notes and this guy / girl or band have done something that stirs me up and sounds original. I think part of the problem is that many people (probably the 40+ group) think that all the talent has been used up. Not true. There's still a lot of great music to be written.
14. Thanks gang. Congrats appreciated. Nice to audition for a band that isn't age-ist I'm really looking forward to doing something different (and I get a chance to play some fretless to boot)
15. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uH1C7G6ZjHA Singer / songwriter with a backing band in Paris. A change of style for me but it's really interesting to do something different from Sweet child of mine and Littlewing. Best of all, the band are all really nice guys and are totally open to all sorts of suggestions. 3 hour trip though to do gigs. Still all good fun.
16. Was in a band with my wife for about 6 months. Never a problem for us, or any other band members. We spoke to each other like normal bandmembers would, she'd give me the "eyebrow" along with the rest of them when I dropped a note or two and she, and all the others would get the same treatment. As I say, never a problem but it totally depends on the couple, and attitude of the other members. It's not obligatory that it has to go pear-shaped and if it works, it works so why not?

18.
All very subjective, so let's have some cold hard facts: * 80% of people who think that the Beatles are over-rated have listened to 10% or less of their output * 10% of people who think the Beatles are under-rated are 20% more likely to own the entire Beatles' catalogue * 90% of people who own all the Beatles recorded output admit to (rarely / never) listening to 'Octopus's Garden' except for the first time that they heard it. * 4% of people who listen frequently to 'Octopus's Garden' have at some time been sectioned under the 1987 Mental Health Act (Source: BMI / ASCAP 2007) .
Is the answer 11?
19. Love it. So much space yet so complete.
20. I seem to remember that at one time (maybe still is) that Yesterday was the most covered song in popular musical history. Must have been doing something right eh?
21.
The most over-rated band in history Very influential etc but I have never actually listened to 90% of their stuff. Not hostile, just never went there.
Interesting point but I guess, apart from all the screaming 15 year olds that wanted to marry Paul McCartney their talent and huge appeal really lay with the songwriting ability rather than the musicianship.
22. The usual lot mentioned in previous posts plus.. Celebration Freak out My girl & Stand by me (for a smoochie) Midnight hour Knock on wood Relax & Thriller if you have the line-up to do them. All old hat but they work well.
23.
Nice sarnie that, I had one of them before took a arrow to the knee. Ani-way good day to you sir let the sun of god shine on your passing day.....I am interested in [insert item here] Bass geetarah. Would you axepta western onion & ship to the Congo ? I hope that god sends yore responze soon mi guud friend David Smith Managing dirextor of Umbutu shipping cumpany
Don't worry, you're money is quite safe. David Smith's brother is definately transfering £2,000,000 to my UK account now that he has my account details and I've only got to give him half back for my trouble.
24.
Oh wow is that an original '65, or the RI?
No, it's one of the new Roadworn Series from the custom shop. Based on the original Mortlake 65 model. Only 500 will be produced and apparently, each one will come with an original drayman's delivery note and an Old Holborn dog-end included in the case candy. Order to delivery time is 3 months. Bass Direct have one in (No 27) if you're interested but at full RRP of £1,395 I'll probably stick with the Lidl 5150 Mk2.
25. Yeah see, you've buggered yourself already by using words like "versatile" and "reliable"
