1. Nice one Johngh, the only other man that appreciates Patrick Rondat. Can't believe that no-one has got Jeff Beck in their band So here's my rock line-up Guitars, Jeff Beck and Patrick Rondat Vox, Chris Cornell (Soundgarden) Drums, Matt Abts (Govt Mule) Keys, Tony Hymas Bass, me in the corner looking lost. Here's my Barbican line-up Guitars, Russ Freeman and Lee Ritnour Drums, Sonny Emory Keys, Dave Grusin and Joe Zawinul Sax, Eric Marienthal Bass, me in the corner looking lost
2. How come no manufacturer has ever offered "signature" upright double basses? (No doubt someone will prove me wrong but I've never heard of any) I guess they must think that upright players wouldn't feel the need to lash out around £35,000 for a "Ron Carter RC55 deluxe" or a "Charlie Mingus Mojo 2"
3.
Owning two sig basses, I actually feel mixed about them. In principle, I find the idea of owning a replica of someone else's bass odd (unless you're in a tribute band or a HUGE fan!) so I went for the whole 'go in and try as many as possible and buy the one that is best!' idea. Both times that turned out to be the signature model. There isn't a jazz bass I've played with a neck quite like the Geddy. For me, I loved it and wouldn't have had that profile on a standard production model. Similarly, I went for the Nate Mendel precision because the neck profile is so different to the other standard precision neck profiles and the addition of the bad ass bridge, quarter pounder and nitro finish swung it. I suppose the feel and sound rather than the signature on the headstock made the decision for me.
+1 for this reply. The only sig bass I've owned was a Roscoe Beck V. I bought it purely for what the bass played like and sounded like (and I just happened to love what it looked like) Nothing to do whatsoever with Roscoe Beck being some sort of hero. He just happened to help design a bass that really worked for me. I would still have bought it if it had said Deirdre Barlowe on the headstock.
4. Sounds like a nightmare. I think the key to all this is your line " the keyboard player, who has been a fairly successful musician in the past" with "the past" being the important bit. He's obviously not successful now because people know what he's like. Without doubt, a "big fish in little pond" situation. Unfortunately, there are a lot of folks out there with a much higher opinion of themselves than is in truth, deserving and in this case, he obviously doesn't realise that in doing what he'd done at these gigs, he's the least professional person on the stage. Each band member has a duty (I believe) to do what they can to ensure the song, the performance and the band is the best they can offer to any audience on the night. Sounds like you certainly kept your end of the bargain up anyway. As (I think Flyfisher) pointed out, seems strange that he would put people in this position at a live gig knowing (as he's been a fairly successful musician in the past) that it might make the whole band look bad
5. Next time he's at your gig, ask him to keep an eye on the guitarists technique and the vocalists pitching too as they've been looking for some advice on those issues
6. Our guitarist has just bought a Tanglewood electro acoustic. (Something like EW47 EC or thereabouts, don't quote me) He was raving about this after trying it out in the shop and when he told me the price and then what make, I was a little surprised I admit. I UK Googled it as usually I can source stuff much cheaper back in the UK for my French pals. It was in fact £120 dearer. Anyway, he turned up here with it and plugged it in. This thing is incredible. Small bodied with a huge sound. Sounds fantastic unplugged too. Workmanship is crazy good quality and has all the right bits on it (grovers, Fishman etc) Bearing in mind his other electro acoustic is a beautiful hand built €3,000 Kopo, this thing is a serious contender. The equivalent priced guitar from the say the Martin range, buys you a heap of fibre-board crap. For €700, he's got a solid Mahogany instrument that plays, sounds and looks beautiful.
7. First thing, great pic EZBASS. You must be really proud. Santa brought me (and the Mrs) a Onesie each (from our son) we spent the whole day and evening in them yesterday. I got guitar strings, chocolate and a book on Astronomy from our daughter. That'll do me. Have a good time everyone.
8. All the drummers I like wouldn't want to play with me but these are they. Matt Abts (Govt Mule) Manu Katche' Van Romaine (Steve Morse band)
9.
It certainly is. I think it's a Japanese Robben Ford model.
How long has he had it? looks very similar to the one I sold about 5 years ago. That was a Jap Ford prototype (had a little RF2 on the truss cover) Fabulous guitars (and rare now) Sorry to get off topic here. Great band you got there.
10. Nice, Is that a Fender Esprit your guitarist is using?
11.
My mate is on his 6th brand new MIM Fender twin in 6 months, and that's gone wrong now too.
That's the problem with the Made in Macclesfield Fenders. Unreliable
12. Haven't hit play (yet) as I remember that awful jacket. This has to be the definitive live version. It's incredible. Thanks for reminding me.
13. Kn0b or not, genius or not, boring or not (all subjective) He put the hours in and can play, and is definately a part of rock music history. He is what he is and love him or hate him, he contributed, unlike the million ultra-fast bedroom guitarists on You tube that don't. I like him.
14. Gigged a Deville for about 4 years over here. Ultimate in clean but unfortunately it was the 2 x 12 60 watter and became impossible to lift into the car. Only reason I sold it.

16. For a start, I'd name the band, and then put exactly what you posted here on Face book It'll soon get round, and get back to the band. No-one likes bad publicity and it may prompt an offer to put things right.
17.
An interesting little experiment innit Think I'll title my album the same Also, a good way to remember how to spell Savile correctly lies in the second syllable.
Thanks, I'm sure I'll remember that (the spelling that is, not your album )
18. An OLP Stingray 5. Bought from Josh on BC. Sounds great, feels great, stands me in £80 plus a drop of petrol and I can gig it anywhere with no worries about damage etc. None of the dear stuff gets a look in now. If I could have one bass back that I sold though, it would be my old Status 6 string from 10 years ago.
19.
Blimey it's quiet in ere. Obviously not very impressive. Maybe it needs a new title ..
Well, that certainly seemed to work although I'm still trying to get my head around the fact that folks thought it more interesting with the Saville header
20. I know what you mean about the backing track. Eric Johnson does something like putting his 3rds on the top of his chords and this has the same feel to it. Agree anyway, fabulous phrasing. One to watch.
21. Nope, never heard of him. It says he won Guitar idol. Well deserved by the sound of it. Beautiful player. Throws the lot in. One minute he's in some mode from outer space and the next he's blues scale and it all just seems to gel and work. Great fluidity and a serious command of the fretboard. Lovely playing, but no doubt there'll be a further 70 posts explaining where he's going wrong Looks like he's playing a Squier too. Mine doesn't sound like that!! Funnily enough, I didn't pay too much attention to the rest of the composition so I guess that means his playing held my attention for the whole 5 minutes although for the intro chords it did sound as though David Sanborne might start playing
22. Recently bought (as middle man again) an HK PA from Lee. Despite problems with payment going astray and him having it stuck at his house for two weeks after second payment, finally got it picked up. What a nice understanding and patient guy. Top man and a real gent. Great deal and over the moon with the PA. A pleasure to deal with, Thanks Keith
23. Bit different than usual as it was on guitar. A duo with a female singer so nowhere to hide Went down well and picked up a private gig for next Saturday in some chateau, where we'll apparently be playing to the owner and 20 guests so not exactly Woodstock but sounds like fun with probably nice food. Great to have the opportunity to play stuff like Fly me to the moon, Got you under my skin, Girl (boy) from Ipanema etc. Might even help my bass playing a bit with all these chords.
24. Never heard of them before but having looked at the for sale section, by some quirky miracle, he has the ONLY Precision bass I've ever thought looked attractive The 79 Antigua) I hate Precisions but that one, is seriously cool
25.
Look, it's simple, really. We even have a model all ready and waiting... Here's the instructions ('borrowed' from Kerry Ann Simpson, at 'Knitting Paradise'...)... -- I think I used size 10 U.S., 16" circular needles; -- C/O a number divisible by 6, say 72 or 84 (depending upon size of head, yarn, etc. I think I cast on 78 or 84 for average man's size head. (So, place a marker after every 14th stitch for 84 stitches -- six sections around the circle). -- Join yarn and start with a garter stitch, then switch to a st. st. after about an inch. -- Change colors every few rows. -- When the hat measures about 6" from the c/o row, decrease 6 stitches evenly every row until there are 6 stitches left (change to dps at about 36 sts.) -- Cut yarn and weave end through last 6 stitches and tie off on wrong side. -- Weave in ends. And, that's about it. ...which gives us this... ...so just get knitting, OK..? Yes, you can sew a 'BC' patch on, when it's done. Yes, you can change the colours (a little, not too much...). Yes, it's good for metal, too. Yes, it's fretless (well, has caused me no worries up to now, at least...). Yes we can. Yes, girls are allowed to knit/own/wear one, too. Yes, Milty, you can use the colours of any flag you wish. Yes; may be worn left-handed.
Ah, if it had been a five string, I'd have had it.
