Yep, i have to play some Kelly Clarkson and Katy Perry, even some Thomspon Twims. Not good. However, the bands USP is doing hard rock covers of cheesy pop hits, as well as the usual indie and rock covers, so its gone from being a chore to actually being quite fun.

Indeed, new strings every gig, or every other gig or so is the normal at that level. Of course, at that level they may be earning 10 or 15 grand a night for playing a large venue, so can afford it. Or they may even have sponsorship deals with string manufacturers. For mortals like myself its a case of finding a sting that sounds consistent for longest. Not necessarily new or bright, but decent enough once played in and then consistently maintaining that for a long period.

Indeed. The low side of medium for me, typically 3-3.5mm at the 17th. No lower. As you say, sounds much better than super low for the sake of it. Also, too low compromises manipulation for hammer ons, pull offs, etc.

Aye, my '69 precision is so heavy my other basses are in orbit around it. Fortuntely im a 19 1/2 stone amateur powerlifter, so even the most anvil like bass bothers me not. I give thanks to the Lord that I don't have to worry about that.

Thats a deliberate satin finish, which has itself aged and tarnished a little. Cheaper than bright chrome as it doesn't require the surface to be polished to the same standard.
