No Glasto 'Look at that Bass!' Thread Yet?
benebass replied to merello's topic in General Discussion
BRilliant - Wilson or Fender! Wait - what's Morrissey's bass player playing? Maple Wal? Shergold? What is it? BBC3 (or 4) just now!
Think it was a Hayman 4040 - built by the same people who did Shergold, but a few years before. There's a thread here. Cheers, B. P.S. Adam Clayton's brought out a few dodgy ones tonight - especially that Warwick -
Sad loss of a gifted man who worked on so many classics (didn't know he'd worked on T.Rex's Electric Warrior until today). RIP Martin... B.
saw darwin deez yesterday at middlesbroughs intro festival,
Liked the album when I first heard it, but went to see him at the Evolution Festival in Newcastle the other week & wasn't into all the choreographed stuff in between the songs. Did like the fact he played a guitar with only four strings on & his bassist's Reverend was pretty nice... Cheers, B.

John Paul Jones playing bass for Seasick Steve
benebass replied to kevin_lindsay's topic in General Discussion
I had previously listened on my studio monitors and sub, but having just listened to the extended edition on the TV's speakers, I can fully agree that the bass sounded like a frogs fart in a pond full of wild geese
Totally agree - just watching it now & after boosting my TV EQ to top bass there is still nothing resembling a bassline to be heard on the first Seasick Steve track. Made the Strokes sound great though! B. -
On the subject of shorter scale has anyone ever tried a 30-32" scale 5/6 string? I'm curious coz I find 34" a bit of a stretch towards the nut (I reckon its contributed to my sprained wrist) and was thinking of having a shorter scale one built. Any advice?
Unless it is a very good luthier then the B might be a bit floppy due to the lower tension of the shorter scale. From what I understand, this can be oversome with choice of materials to a degree (e.g. harder wood on the neck), but I'm no expert. Birdsong have a patented design that wraps the low B through the body & out again under the strings to increase tension on a 31" scale & there's a demo on You Tube - looks interesting, but they're not cheap & as they're handmade in the US it's difficult to try one. I think there's someone on here with a 5 string 32" Status King Bass & they were pretty pleased with it - might be worth a search. Over on talkbass.com there's a medium scale bass club with a few discussions on 32" 5 strings that's worth a read too. Lower than 32" might be a bad idea - I remember reading about a high-end 30" build with a low B & don't think it turned out great (might have been Alembic, but not sure...). Cheers, B.

Hi - One thing to bear in mind is the Marquee is 32" scale, but the Bison is the full 34". Never played any myself, but the bass player in Oasis used a Bison from what I remember (not that you could really hear it over Noel Gallagher ). This seems to be the best demo on You Tube & funnily enough uses a Hartke amp as a pre (audio clips a bit, mind): - A few demos of people playing along with tunes on there too, but I've found nothing on the Marquee yet (I was considering one a while ago). Here's a review from Music Radar though - pretty positive. Cheers, B.

Sold Rasta a Fernandes 5 string & it was a really smooth transaction - great guy to do business with & would definitely deal with him again. Cheers! B.

Is it like one of these? Think it would fit right in to a rock band to be honest. Unless you're going for a tribute act then there's a lot of flexibility as to what's 'right' - if it feels good then chances are the sight of you enjoying playing a bass will overshadow the bass itself. Cheers, B.

Quite a few fans on here... http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...mp;hl=retrovibe B.

I'd go for option c - just looks right to me. I totally understand why you'd soften the top horn - seriously considered buying one of their 8 strings a while ago, but wasn't sure about the strap placement. By the way, if you're using a Steinberger bridge & will be using double ball end strings then the measurements of the bridge / tuners will have to be right to take the strings, which are designed for a 34" scale. I think you can buy adaptors for the top of the neck to use single ball end strings easy enough though. Cheers, B.

Jools Holland Show - Still Worth Watching?
benebass replied to spongebob's topic in General Discussion
I went to the filming of a Later show last year… the Friday show is recorded in a one-hour take with no re-runs, then there's a 15-minute break, then they do the 10 o'clock show live. So when Jools says "and you may hear such-and-such on the Friday show... " it's already happened.
This makes sense - I always think the Tuesday show is a bit flat compared to Friday. Tonight's show seemed to work better as it was more about the guests than it was about Jools. I still think it needs a revamp though - I reckon it'd do well if they move it to a 100% live slot on BBC1 after the 10 O'Clock news on a Friday...and we might see the end of the Graham Norton show! B. -
Hi Paul - that model's called the GAXB150 & it's a medium scale (32" I think), which isn't everyone's bag. They retailed for £100-150 originally - it's the Ibanez beginner line. I picked one up in a shop once & it felt OK for the cash, but didn't have a chance to give it a good play. Do a search for GAXB150 & you'll find some reviews online - they seem fairly mixed, but a few people on talkbass seem to like them. Cheers, B.

Second hand's definitely the way to go - looks like Black Knight is gear4music's house brand & don't think you'd get much back if you move it on in the future... B.

Very nice Howard! Always loved the bass sound on T.Rex tunes & recently found out most of it was recorded on one of these. Classic... B.
Hi Ben, That's a nice looking bass and the price is fine. However you appear to have a problem with a sloping floor in your house - do you know if there is a history of mining in the area?
Hi Howard - it's an interesting take on a Jazz copy with that scratchplate. Subtly different... I think mining's probably one of the nicer things there's been a history of round here to be honest! Cheers, B.

Been trying to find some more info on these, but there's not much in terms of reviews out there. They were discontinued a while ago, but it looks like Fernandes have brought them back: - http://www.fernandesguitars.com/retrospect...ospect-5-x.html Will be open to offers for a cash sale... Cheers, B.
I've never had a problem with ordering from them. Maybe it's the actual postal service ?
Yeah, the service levels on standard mail are not what you'd expect - I think it's fifteen working days before you can register something as lost. Luckily my latest Status order turned up today despite the bank holiday... Cheers, B.

I've bought loads of sets from them & they've always been really good with posting them. Ordered some strings on Wednesday & had an e-mail on Thursday saying they're in the post so expecting them over the next couple of days. I think they're quite a small operation now in terms of staff, but considering how much they charge for their strings it's worth giving them another chance - I'm really impressed with mine! Cheers, B.

Hi - I'm putting my Fernandes Retrospect 5 up for grabs, as I don't really need a five string & it's not being played. I can't find much about these online, but it's a quality passive Chinese-made take on a Jazz Bass. The neck is really compact at the nut (it's about Precision width) & string spacing at the bridge is 17-18mm. I've found it easy to pick up after playing my four strings & if I didn't have somethiing coming in soon then I'd be keeping it. I think the body is alder (quite light) & it's a decent sunburst finish - there are a couple of dings, but nothing major & overall it's in very good shape. It's currently strung with La Bella flats (worth over £30 on their own), but I have the rounds it came with & I'll throw them in too. [s]Don't have a case/bag for it so can't do a postal deal at the mo[/s]. Managed to pack this for sending so I'm asking £175 posted, but would be interested in a cashdeal with collection from Newcastle upon Tyne.
I think maybe the RBX range is what most people think of when they think of Yamaha's. I mean lots of pros have played Yamahas over the years so it's not as if they haven't tried to market the upper level instruments with signature models etc.
I've always thought that the fact that Yamaha haven't diversified with branding has stopped them from being accepted as a pro instrument by some. Fender have Squier, Gibson have Epiphone etc., but a Yamaha's always a Yamaha whether it's a RBX or a TRB. I think this does put some people off taking the higher end stuff seriously. Personally, I think they make consistently decent instruments at every price level, but can see how they are perceived as being a bit safe by some. Funnily enough, I had a SBV for a while & although it looked a bit mad, I thought it sounded more like a traditional Jazz than a lot of modern Fenders... Cheers, B.
