Does it really matter what gear you have??
PaulWarning replied to discreet's topic in General Discussion
one problem with relativity cheap gear, until you've tried the expensive stuff you never know how much better it will be or whether it's worth the extra, I've just bought a Vintage V4 that I'm perfectly happy to play, but if I'd never had a MIA Precision I'd never know how good the Vintage was -
Does it really matter what gear you have??

only to a certain extent, a bass player I know has just switched from guitar, he's not got any real love for bass playing, he bought a cheapo Westone and a smallish Laney combo and to be frank he sounds awful, to my ears anyway, a really highish middy sound (bit like knocking on someones front door), when he plays the E string it booms and disappears into the mix when he plays the D string, so decent gear does matter, but, the laws of diminishing returns kicks in very quickly -
I've gone off GAS thanks to our guitarist, he's always changing guitars and amps, never happy and you know what?, he always sounds the same to me, so I'm thinking what's the point? unless it's a quantum leap you'll always sound like you, so I'm sticking with my TE and Precision bass

I have my Trace input Vol at max too, occasionally the red light will flicker, passive MIA Precision

definitely a pick, I've never used flats but it could just have some of the treble rolled off

What impresses you more? Fingering or Picking
PaulWarning replied to Basska's topic in General Discussion
I can't play finger style, no interest in trying, I play in a punk band and all the bassists that inspired me to play bass are pick players, Burnell, Foxton, Macca, as far as I know they can't play finger style either -
I've always thought a zero fret instead of relying on the nut for string height was a good idea
-
this is very true, I always think of Macca's "my love don't give me presents, but I know that she's no peasant" as a perfect example of this, but get it right and a rhyme is better than a non rhyme. If there was a template for writing good lyrics everybody would be doing it

Not A Word About The Queen Movie Bohemian Rhapsody?
PaulWarning replied to Bluewine's topic in General Discussion
trouble with films like this is if they put the grittier stuff in they're accused of sensationalising it, leave it out and and they're accused of being 'bubble gum friendly' I won't be going, not a big Queen fan, my partner is though, I'm sure she'll like it, as always, if you really like Queen you'll love the film. I'll watch it when it comes on TV -
mine gets worse after a cold, also my hearing gets worse in one ear the doctor suggested one of these to unblock the Eustachian tube, not had a cold since I bought one so can't say whether it's works https://www.amazon.co.uk/Otovent-Glue-Ear-Treatment-Pack/dp/B00308F9O6

being a lefty on a left handed guitar works in your favour as well though, when someone you don't know asks to borrow your guitar at open mics, the reply "Oh you're left handed too are you" gets rid of them, it amazes me how many people don't notice you are left handed when you're playing, sticks out like a sore thumb to me

no need it's all free online, saved me hours trying to figure out what rhymes with what

I go back to lyrics I've written after about a week, it's surprising how 'the best thing you've ever written' are absolute rubbish when the initial enthusiasm has worn off
-
wonder how many remixes we'll get of the Beatles back catalogue? Reminds of an Ozzy Osbourne quote after yet another Black Sabbath greatest hits, "it's like they're digging up a dead prostitute for one last fu*k". Back to the White Album, according to George Martin it would have made a great single album, can't really argue.

the article alluded to this as well

this is about right I think, then to complicate things the Mail is probrexit and the Mail on Sunday is pro remain, or is it the other way round now the MoS's editor now runs the Mail?
-
there's only 3 and does the Star bother with politics at all?
-
I'm friendly with the guys that run a small brewery who supply beer to spoons, and they are more than happy with the way they do business with them

well each to there own, less queuing time for me 😊, I'm rather fond of their veterinarian lasagne I don't use the one nearest to me very often tbh, it's one of the soulless ones you talk about but there are good ones as well. In Nottingham the Trent Bridge Inn and the Gooseberry Bush are worth a visit I don't think they pay their staff that well, but bar staff don't get good wages anywhere but training and suchlike is good (so I hear) and no zero hours contracts I don't think anyway

there in lies the answer as to why some people don't like him, we do seem to have a culture in this country where anybody who is successful even through their own efforts is despised. Some do deserve it, Maxwell and Green spring to mind. I've never heard bad things about Tim Martin, (doesn't come across very well on TV I'll admit) employs thousands of people and treats them in an above average way by all accounts, and most important of all sells me decent beer at rock bottom prices 😊
-
so politics aside why is he a complete and utter tool?
-
I agree with you about the staff, but that's how they keep the prices down, and again some are better than others and if you don't like the coffee don't go in for one, which I assume you don't, I find it perfectly acceptable for a quid a cup with free refills. As regards the buildings, in my experience they usually try and keep the exterior in sympathy with what was there before, if it's worth keeping, obviously the interior has to be changed As you've probably gathered I use them a lot, cheap good quality real ales, and decent food, whenever I'm visiting an area for the first time I always find out where the nearest one is

I think that sort of thing could happen in any crowded pub/club in certain areas (city centres?), there are many good Wetherspoons that are not situated in those sort of areas
-
I think that, maybe, some of the sniffy comments on Wetherspoons has more to do with Tim Martin being a staunch Brexiteer than the way the pub chain is run, not sure how we got here from the Mail and John Deacon though
-
is there anything wrong with Wetherspoons supporting British Jobs?
