we've just had a gig pulled for 11th January, because the pub company don't think we'll get enough people there based on the number of people who say they're attending on Facebook, that's a first
-
had the misfortune to have some of the Xmas TOTP's on, what a depressing experience, a succession of girl singers singing middle of the road computer generated (or so it seemed) songs, about the edgiest thing I heard was the sausage rolls song. So, yes the Jools show is still needed, just not Jools
-
the problem with Jools is not the music, I accept I'm probably only going to like one artist per programme if I'm lucky, they have to try and cater for everyone, it's his, mostly, embarrassing interviews and his insistence on accompanying at least one act per programme on the piano with that smug look of his. I think they need a change of presenter myself

I've had a few Jazz's and respectfully disagree, if that were the case why would anybody bother with a Precision?
-
sales of £280M means nothing really it's profit that counts
-
glad you put a smiley after that statement might have thought you were trolling Me too, never a big fan of Simonon's bass sound, perhaps because it was low in the mix till the remasters, but Bruce Foxton and JJ among my major influences, sound wise anyway, and I know Foxton used to use a Ric but I suspect that was more to do with the symmetry with Wellers Ric rather than the sound, he soon went onto Precisions, did he always record with them?
-
I've no intention of replacing my P with anything, just like that thick lower mid tone that cuts through the mix
-
which is one of the advantages of Vinyl Records , the vast majority of turntables don't have a remote so you actually listen to the whole of one side without skipping tracks
-
there is still a place for the smallish record shop, Rough Trade are doing ok, I think, it's gone full circle really, places like HMV killed off the independents with aggressive pricing, but now volume of sales can't support that.
-
never played a Ric, being a lefty they're a bit rarer, but I don't think I want to, I might like it, and then have to shell out 2 or 3 grand to buy one. I think the one thing most of us can agree on, they're overpriced
-
we got stuffed a couple of years ago, booked in Feb for NYE, cancelled in Sept because the Landlady wanted a band she liked on, it never happened and they finished up with a very average rock covers band on in the end. We've had a couple of gigs cancelled this year but we tend to roll with it, no point in falling out with the venue if they're still booking you, we just put £50 on the price

Modern compact cab recommendations or an old Trace Head
PaulWarning replied to The Twickerman's topic in Amps and Cabs
I'm with you on that, and agree, but is it that important to get exactly the sound you want when it's only for personnel monitoring, is it worth agonising over what lightweight cab to use as long as the Trace is sending the signal you want FOH? -

this may be a stupid question but if you're using a full PA can't you just put more of your bass through the your monitor? -
Bands you think were better before they got big
PaulWarning replied to Barking Spiders's topic in General Discussion
most bands have only got a couple of decent albums in them, sometimes not even two, they've got one way of playing and one style and when that's exhausted it's a descent into repetitiveness or, as you say, blandness -
ebay seller making up the rules...
PaulWarning replied to prowla's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
why would anybody want to pay ebay fees and risk a dispute when paypal would almost certainly side with the buyer when there's cash on offer? Some strange folk about -
"Gig Foot"..Too old for this *%$@
PaulWarning replied to skidder652003's topic in General Discussion
I know this is an anathema to some bass players (and guitarist) but move around a bit, if you're standing the same way all night, it will put strain on the joints that take the weight, and the added bonus is you'll put on a more interesting show and get more exercise -
I'm with Sting on that one, sounds like something our drummer would do, I just plough on and hope to come out the other end ok

What are must know songs for Jam nights ?
PaulWarning replied to shoulderpet's topic in General Discussion
Went to an open mic last night that turned into a Jam session, various blues turnarounds, Rocking in the Free world and Lay Lady Lay, twice. A couple of things struck me, the songs last a long time because nobody knows how to finish them and apart from the people actually playing it's boring drivel, I've come to the conclusion that Jam sessions should not be done in the public domain -

the Ramones went off a bit after their 8th Album -

well if that's the case Status Quo, when John Coughlan and Alan Lancaster left they went craper than crap, they trashed their reputation completely -

The Clash, first two albums were top notch, London Calling was liked by people who weren't really into punk, then it went even further downhill with Sandinista -
Modern compact cab recommendations or an old Trace Head
PaulWarning replied to The Twickerman's topic in Amps and Cabs
I use a SMX GP12 AH250 head with Fender Rumble V2 cabs ( 2 x 8 and a 1 x 10) very happy with them, not easy to source these days though, but if you like the old Trace sound but not the weight, light weight cabs are the way to go -
on my list? for people to say, "lets call it quits, I won't get you a present and you don't get me one", it's the present buying/giving I don't like about Christmas, it's nearly as bad trying to think of things for people to buy me as trying to think of things to buy other people, bah Humbug.
-
as regards the weight, I've got two heads, a series 6 AH200 and a SMX GP12 AH 250, both without fans and an easy one handed lift (about 13Kg) our rehearsal studio has an AH600 which is bloody heavy. My amps have never been lacking in volume so I would say get a lower output model, you've no need to worry about them not being loud enough

A Cry For Help - Improvising Bass Lines on the Fly
PaulWarning replied to PatrickJ's topic in Theory and Technique
annoying isn't it? easy for drummers they don't have play the right notes, I've played with guitarists like this, they know the song so they expect you too, but if you start playing something they haven't got a clue, but the least information you want is "what key is it in" but then, some guitarists don't even know this
