1.
Generally they are ok, be warned that you cannot directly swap the tuners for fender style ones as they wont fit. The body is quite possibly some sort of ply, the pickups generally have a decent amount of output and being that its from the 70's the neck might be nicely played in. It would make a good modding project in my opinion and thatsb a lefty so if you want it I'd get it while you could. They generally go for around 100 - 150 if its a nice one. I'd sooner get one of these over a squire. hope this helps.
+1 I've seen a few around over the years and they're not bad at all.. There's a few quite decent 70's jap basses around at the moment (here occasionally and on Ebay quite often) and it would seem like it's a good time to get one as the nostalgia for them seems to be growing. Maybe it's because prices for the real thing keep going up and up?
 2.
Hey there mate... I think I'll take you up on this offer. It's only about 30 minutes from where I live. Thanks! Just to let you know, I only plan to bring a bass and a gadget or two. Wahey, I'm sorted! Thanks Nik for the offer. I would have applied anyway if I couldn't find something a little more straight forward for me. It's a great idea. Always good to reduce your carbon footprint... good job!
No problem s_u_y and I'm glad to hear you're sorted out! Look forward to meeting you up there....
 3. Hi Folks, Seems like a great day was had by all and the photos of the day look great - as does all the gear! Must say it all looks terribly 'posh' too as it's a much nicer studio than the one we held the South East Bash in last August which was a bit of a dive in comparison.. It's really whetted the appetite for the upcoming Bash in Northampton now. It'd be really useful, if anyone's got time, to have some names/details put next to the photos so we can follow things a bit easier from down here in the 'sarf'! Thanks... Cheers Nik
 4.
Saw a really good blues/rock band the other night. Bass player had a Stingray 4 and an old Peavey rig, connected with a curly lead. Went and spoke to him afterwards and asked him about his gear and he said he'd not changed it for 20 years. I was gobsmacked. I can't go more than a couple of months without replacing some of my stuff! I guess if it ain't broke, don't fix it...
Very impressive but he's probably been married and divorced 5 times in that time though! It all comes out somewhere in the wash...
 5. BUMP!! 2 weeks to go now.. Any more takers for the Bass Bash Bus?? That's not easy to say first thing on a Sunday morning!
 6.
Any space for me? I may be able to get there, but doubt i could bring anything..
Could be... Whereabouts are you based? We're travelling up from the south coast and have room for more people depending on location..
 7.
Firstly mate I'm really sorry to hear of your injury to your hand.... Stay positive and good luck.
+1 and good luck with the recovery and the sales!
 8. Justin Chancellor (Tool).. Or was he a 90s bassist as well....?
 9. Lovely looking basses.. Very reminiscent of 'James Jamerson!
 10.
http://sports.webshots.com/photo/102388879...89537YkquYyIuxO It's a bit different. I'd like one..... I think...
If I'm not mistaken, that's a Wal bass known politely as 'the three headed monster'... Here's the link for more info: http://www.trevorandthea.eclipse.co.uk/wal_history.htm Scroll down the page a bit and you'll find it!
 11.
Prince
Good shout for Prince!! In amongst all his other skills, he's a very funky and musical bass player...
 12.
I see your Les McQueen and raise you Marc Park - Park Avenue
Scary!! Good shout from dub_junkie for these two chaps: "John Gustafson - all of Roxy Music's best work had this guys playing on it".. And "George Murray - Bowie's Low and Heroes "sound and vision" especially"
 13.
I've done this based on some of my favourite records of the 1970's and Number 1 has to be, and I am gobsmacked no-one else has said it, James Jamerson on Whats Going On. At Number 2 I give you John Entwistle for Who's Next or Quadrophenia - take your pick. Coming third is Andy Fraser for Fire and Water and Free Live - both feature Mr Big and that bass solo. Next is the guy that played the riff heard in every music shop on saturday afternoons before slap - Roger Waters for Dark Side and Wish You were here. Not sure about the tail end charlie but Paul Simeonon gets the nod for both the playing and the picture.
Pretty amazing list! How did we all miss 'What's Going On'?
 14.
Bruce Thomas?
That'll be the one!
 15.
Coming from a man with a Wal
I knew you'd say that!! The Wal Pro 2e is worth about £800-£1000 I suppose, but that kind of money still won't fetch me a really nice 70's P or J bass.. Not at the prices I've seen around at the moment!
 16.
Nik, you MUST be wanting the Bassman also, it's right up your street. Just imagine your Wal through that almighty compresion and chorus. Mick Karn eat your heart out... A lot easier to get past Mrs Silverfoxnik than 2.5 tonnes of H&K as well Chris
Funnily enough, I've no idea what the Bassman Nomad is Chris and must admit to not being a fan of 80s bass sounds particularly (Wals being the exception).. I've never liked that compressed / chorus sound that took all the guts out of a bass IMHO... My problem is that I really prefer 60's and 70's basses and bass sounds but in general, can't afford to buy basses from that era!!
 17.
Chris Squire Norman Watt-Roy John Entwistle Barry Adamson
+1 All brilliant and quite unique.. And as Bassassin said, Dennis Dunaway (Alice Cooper Group) and Jean Jacques Burnel (Stranglers) are also two favourites of mine.. I'd also add the guy who played with Elvis Costello and Roger Waters from Pink Floyd! Also, musn't forget Leigh Gorman, who is an amazing bass player; Leigh started off with Adam & The Ants in 1979 and then went on through the 80's with BowWowWow.. Seriously underrated musician! On a more frivolous note, Suzi Quatro??
 18. Hi Chris, PM sent in reply to yours re: the H&K... Thanks for coming up with my new strapline; will now sign everything in future 'Silverfoxnik - purveyor of 80's mojo' I can see my new business cards already.... Nik
 19.
Hi guys, Whilst scouring the internet for control cavity mods I recently came across a really novel idea: the TBX tone control. In most instances, this wouldn't be particularly useful on a bass, but it got me thinking - seeing as one can cut treble or bass, wouldn't it be possible to create a passive mid cut control, either by modifying the cap / resistor values on the TBX or by using a Push / Pull tone pot (with various gubbins attached to it) to switch between standard treble cut and mid cut? There's a similar topic on Talkbass which mentions the BluEQube used by Dingwall, but I'd really like to have a go at doing this myself. Any ideas?
No idea on this at all, as I'm not in any way up on electrics/electronics.. But I think it'd be an excellent thing to have to give greater tonal variety & flexibility to passive basses.. Good luck with it!
 20. My personal favourites are ABC - Jackson 5 Signed, Sealed Delivered, I'm Yours - Stevie Wonder Let's Get It On & What's Going On - Marvin Gaye But as the lists above show, there are so many fabulous basslines (and great songs) on the Motown label...
 21.
Anyone fancy giving me and a bass a lift from Battersea, South London? I can always travel to a tube or train station near you... and of course, will chuck in some petrol money for your troubles.
Hi s_u_y, Depending on numbers travelling on the day, Walman, Merton and me are travelling up in a minibus from the south coast, so we could probably rendezvous with you somewhere south of London if that helps? What gear are you planning on taking? Nik
 22. Completely off-topic but that Pedulla looks amazing! Good luck with the sale....
 23.
Egad. It's me. Pictures (+1 cheesy grin) on arrival of bass.
Congratulations! Expect to see big ceremony at the Bass Bash, John Cleese 'The Oscars' style acceptance speech and cheesy pictures in local press, etc, etc... And of course, you'll be donating the bass to a good and worthy cause somewhere..
 24.
The guy who did that first one has watched waaaay too much Pimp my Ride. Mark
+1
 25.
Ah I see. Thanks for that. Interesting, but not for me really. I'm just a bassic plonker, so would be lost amongst all that ethereal gear. Have fun!
No problem dude..
