And don't even attempt to do the D'Angelo/?uestlove/Pino/Saadiq thing unless you want your brain to melt or you're such a bad mofo that you can't help yourself! Go here for elucidation - actually this is so badass I shall embed it:
That's fabulous! Thanks for the link.... !
 2.
There's too many people in education who are there because they didn't make it in the specific domain themselves ("those who can't do teach"). Consequently, many of these educators have no first-hand experience of the mechanisms required to succeed in the real World. This doesn't matter in many academic disciplines which are knowledge-based. However, I don't believe that this is true of music. Some of what I consider the most powerful and emotive music I've ever heard is played by musicians who are very poor technicians, whilst other music I consider equally powerful and emotive is played by brilliant technicians. Logically therefore, technique is not a requisite for creativity (IMHO that is). What I believe IS common to both the technically naive and the technically gifted creators of such music is their emotional connection with the material (lyrically and musically), with their fellow musicians and with their audience. Show me a lecturer who can teach that? I suspect that in the fullness of time we'll start to see that the only viable career path for the majority of graduates of such music schools - at least those who want to pursue their chosen profession - is to take up teaching posts in such music schools Chris
Have to agree with all that you say there Chris, but it's a scary thought what you've said in the last sentence!!
 3.
Last year we playing on the same bill as a BIMM band. They were insanely tight, grooved well and generally did all the right things on a technical basis. Unfortuately they were also totally hopeless at writing songs, particularly on the lyrical front, deeply uncool, totally emotionless and one of the least rock and roll things I have ever encountered. Music by numbers. A bit like Dream Theater actually... Alex
That sounds very much in line with another Basschat member who I was talking to yesterday who attended BIMM for 1 year but he left feeling it wasn't taking him where he wanted to go. One thing he said really surprised me, which was that BIMM often encourage their students to be in as many bands as possible which he described as having 'killed the live music scene in Brighton' because people were in loads of bands which they didn't really have their heart in at all!! To me, that's just crazy advice
 4.
Education is big money, and very few in education examine the rationale for, or even the ethics of, what they teach. I have been teaching (graduate, postgraduate and doctoral) a very specific area of psychology for years and have just resigned my post because I am fed up with what education has become in the UK, i.e., mass market, exploitative and in many cases, pretty much worthless to the student. My view of the music schools in question are informed by the extremely poor quality teaching materials I've seen from a few, so I agree with Nik's comments. Whether there is a place for full-time, systematic and high-level education in popular music performance akin to that in orchestral performance is a question that perhaps requires more thought than I suspect many of the institutions, and even the students, give it. As somneone said above, it ain't rock and roll really is it Chris Note: All opinions are those of the author and no animals were hurt in the making of this rant
Hi Folks, Thanks for taking time to post your thoughts here, some of which have got me thinking about my original post. I kind of agree with Chris's point about this idea of education in the UK becoming , "..mass market, exploitative and in many cases, pretty much worthless to the student." and as a teacher, he should know. One of the things that I find so mystifying about this in an 'Alice in Wonderland' kind of way is that the recent massive growth in music schools/colleges has come at a time when the industry has shrunk to the point where it cannot possibly support all these new competent or brilliant musicians, no matter how much they've been taught how to be 'professional in their playing, their attitude, keep to a diary, learn how to network etc! My guess is that because there's no real money left in the music biz from record sales that all the new schools/college are and have been created and run by the people who used to be able to eke out a living through being in a signed band situation? On the other point about creativity, someone said that the really gifted 10% or so will always come shining through and I think that's fair to say.. As it is about how if you love something you're studying, then you'll do well at it. So, I have definitely taken those positive comments about the music schools on board.. My gut reaction though is that Jimi Hendrix, John Lennon, Elvis, Jaco, The Ox even Mark King for example , would never have even considered going through these type of music schools.. Rather, they would have been too busy getting out there doing it for real each in their own unique way.. Nik
 5. I have a DJ5 in LPB that I bought last year from P-T-P and it's a lovely bass.. One of the best and most authentic 5 string Jazz basses around!
 6.
Oh what the hell - George deserves another pic - he's earned it!
He is amazingly cool Definitely agree about the atmosphere of black & white photos....
 7. Ultra-cool collection Chris - congratulations on all the hard work! Definitely up there with WoT's collection of Fenders.... You do realise that it was very foolish to say "I'm never going to buy another bass" to us lot of jealous, diary-keeping bass maniacs who'll only be too pleased to remind you of the date & time you said it when the next bass arrives at Chez Beedster??
 8. Hi, I've sent you a PM with my friends contact details.. He'd be interested to meet up with you, Cheers Nik
 9. I've never used a Hartke cab but I do have the Peavey 410 TVX and it's been absolutely great for me. I use it with a Gallien Krueger 700 RB head and play 5 string basses through it and it delivers a really good sound - very punchy, extended bottom end that delivers on the low 'B' and good tops.. Excellent value for money! I'm sure the Hartke is good too but have yet to try one personally.
 10. Hi Folks, The son of a dear family friend has been coming to see me for a bit of help & advice for 18 months or so, ever since he started at Brighton Institute of Modern Music (BIMM), where's he's studying bass. When he comes round, he plays me an MP3 of a dreadfull, dull, uninspiring piece of music that sounds like the awful offspring of a composition by the keyboard player from Rockschool and Cliff Richard's team of pop writers - it is just f*****g awful! The poor lad then spends a few hours learning to play along to this drivel whilst I sit and offer words of encoutragement and make tea... Trouble is, this kid is really, really talented - a total natural musician and a very gifted bass player. But this stupid course is going to suck all the imagination, excitement and talent out of him if he stays there any longer!! The thing is, all the great bass players that people talk about on this forum (and others) like James Jamerson, Jaco, John Entwhistle etc, etc, all approached bass playing in a unique way that would never be taught on courses like the ones that are run at these so called 'schools of music'. These pioneering bassists broke all the rules yet have managed to make great music and inspire thousands of bass players the world over. So, shouldn't we be teaching and/or encouraging individuality and freedom of expression over and above everything else in the hope that we let the next generation of young creative bass players come shining through? Any thoughts on this really welcome as I'd like to discuss it with this young lad and see what he thinks about his future before it's too late... Cheers Nik
 11. Nice basses... This made me chuckle though: "Beedster Sig. P Mk. I" but then again, the Beedster does have a way of working his basses.....
 12.
it is a wesley bass off ebay for £52.00 new, sounds and plays better than basses 10 times the price
Fantastic!
 13.
Quality is excellent- as good as anything else I've owned (if not better). You really won't be disappointed if you buy a Lakland.
+1 The build quality on my Lakland DJ5 skyline series is every bit as good as the build quality on my Fender Roscoe Beck 5, which is USA made...
 14. Bootiefulicious collection.. What's the sonic blue one on the wall; it looks very cool?
 15.
Just bought a knacked Blazer real cheap but the truss rod has no nut,I think either the Rod has been over tightned and the nut has snapped off or the nut is simply missing, I can see the thread easily enough and there are no cracks to the neck which would explain an over tighned/snapped nut.Does any one have any ideas? Cheers Si
Best take it to your nearest luthier and get them to check it out, repair it, replace the nut or whatever it needs.. The Blazers are supposed to be great basses and built like tanks, so it'd be worth having checked out properly and spending a few extra quid on making it right..

 17.
Here's some shots of my rig. It's a Db750 / NV610 wired up with bassic cables (http://www.bassic.co.uk/). In the first shot it's with my '69 Fender P, and in the second with my Celinder J-Update 4. The final shot is a closeup of the '69 body. I don't know why I still have GAS but I do.
Lovely set-up and two great basses! Amazing how difficult the GAS is to cure though, even with your hi-quality gear!

 19. Very nice and very triplety (if there's such a word).. Particularly liked the second half of it... Good bass too though I couldn't recognise it?
 20. Very nice Luke! Bet that your Warwick 5 sounds great through that lot
 21.
Dear silverfoxnik, I joined this forum last June, after Basstalk closed, one month later than you joined and I'm a fully fledged member besides you as well so: A ) we're both doing nothing to support this forum B ) you're supporting this forum less than what you're trying to let me think C ) something's VERY wrong in the post counter here ...I help you: this is the 2nd bass I'm trying to sell, one is gone with less posts written than you think... .......if you still don't understand, the "bump" is not my favourite sport, here. Forums aren't usually a place where you MUST write something, if I find something interesting I'm glad to write about, according to my free time, opinion, knowledge of my boringclosetodislexic written English which many times makes me give up. Good manners and courtesy have been gifted by my parents, and they're surely, fortunately, definitely much way better than my English. Probably so aren't yours, as long as long as you judge mine reading this NY greetingless topic. Best regards About this bass price I just want to say I get next to the same price I'm selling here, and I swear it's far from 800-900£. The lowest I see was a bit more than 950£, I have no idea about its conditions. Like everyone's doing here and everywhere, I'm starting with a price, a reasonable price (I said 1100£ or around), it means it can be something less, it means I'm looking for a reasonable offer. Thanks for the interest, any kind of interest...
Hi Muya, First off let me say two things: 1) the basses that i've seen you sell here on Basschat have been very nice quality basses and you obviously know your stuff when it comes to good quality instruments. So I'm sure that anyone dealing with you, at whatever price the deal is, is getting a really great bass. 2) my comments above weren't meant to be of a personal nature and if they have caused offence, then I apologise. Having said that, I stand by my comments about the way I perceive that some 'members' - yourself included - choose only to engage in this forum when they want to sell something. The number of your posts since you joined is evidence of that fact. However, I agree that it is your right to do that and I'm sure that you will agree that equally, it is my right in an open discussion forum like Basschat, to be able to pass comment on that. To be clear about my views (and that's all they are at the end of the day), I believe it is better when the forum is supported by the active involvement of it's members. In return for that support, the members get benefits from being a member. And one of the benefits for members is that there are hundreds of bass players online everyday looking to buy, sell and trade their bass equipment to and from each other.. Which has the advantage of saving on advertising on Ebay or other similar websites or magazines. So, when I have bought and sold on here, I am constantly aware that it is a benefit of my membership that I am able to do so and I am grateful for that privilege and I respect the way the system works. Personally, what 'membership' and 'support' for this forum means to me is taking an active part in the discussions, the debates, the sharing of information and knowledge and the general 'give and take' between members that makes being a bass player that much more fun, more interesting and in a lot of cases, a damm sight easier than it would be without the benefit of this Forum. So, when I make comments like the ones I have on this subject, please bear in mind that it is because I am bloody grateful for being a member of Basschat and I believe that what it has to offer each of us needs to be valued and respected... Even the 'For Sale' forum! Anyway, that's enough from me - I'll keep out of your posts from now on... I'm sure you're a really cool person who has a lot to offer Basschat on top of some very nice basses for sale, so I would just urge you to get a bit more involved, make a contribution, take the mickey out of our 'boringclosetodislexic written English' and enjoy the 'life' here a bit more! You'll enjoy it! Happy New Year and good luck with the sale Nik
 22.
It would be great to see the Wals back on the scene... id deffinatly snap one up, how much would i expect to spend on one these days.
That' anyone's guess at the moment. The s/h prices have been rising steadily for sometime now, though like most things in the face of a possible recession, they're tapering off a bit now. And new price would depend of choice of spec; whether it's a 4, 5 or 6 string model, what woods are used etc, etc? Whatever - it wouldn't be cheap!
