ps. there was a live archive set from Bow wow wow on 6music the other day, and I'm sure Leigh Gorman was using his Wal pro. unfortunately his tone/setup was a bit rattly for the notes to come out clearly on "go wild in the country" (excellent bassline)
+1 for that bassline and for Leigh's playing in general; he's a fantastic and very innovative bassist! Leigh always used and still does use his Wal with Bow Wow Wow.. The one he had when he recorded 'Go Wild' was his red Pro2 (passive model).. I sold him my JG series Wal with leather scratchplate in 1998 and he now tends to use that on all the Bow Wow Wow recordings/tours in the States..
Good job! They say that PVA is stronger than the wood if you wait for it to go off properly. It is still very f***ing pink mind
Shocking, even...

Excellent work and well done for not giving up on the bass when it looked amost beyond repair! These vintage BCR Eagles are great sounding basses and very underrated IMHO.. but then I have one, so I'm biased of course!

Defining bass tones from origins to present
silverfoxnik replied to Scorchin's topic in General Discussion
I disagree, you can do amazing things with palm muting and thumb plucking. Another good trick is to use a five and drop down a string and up five frets for more boom and wooliness. Just spend ages experimenting with different plucking, fretting and muting techniques and you'll build up a huge library of sounds which can all come from one instrument without any knob twiddling. Listening is the key! Alex
+2 Excellent advice! -
Bass Players You Can Spot A Mile Off......
silverfoxnik replied to Bass_In_Yer_Face's topic in General Discussion
A few spring to mind, some more well known than others: Robbie Shakespeare (Sly & Robbie) James Jamerson McCartney John Entwhistle Leigh Gorman (BowWowWow) Justin Chancellor Dennis Dunnaway (Alice Cooper) The guy from Muse is pretty distictive too and that guy who plays solo and does loads of super-fast slapping on a MusicMan SR4 who's name I can't remember for the life of me.. -
London Solo Bass Night - March 4th!
silverfoxnik replied to Steve Lawson's topic in General Discussion
Lovely to see those of you I met at the gig last night - hope y'all had a good time. I was amazed by Yolanda's set. She's without doubt one of the finest funk bassists I've ever heard anywhere. To groove like that with no drummer, and sing, is pretty amazing. I've seen Todd quite a few times, but I'm always amazed by his knowledge of jazz harmony and the beautiful way he employs it, particularly the stuff where he's playing bass, chords and melody at the same time! That hurts my brain... hope to see you all again soon somewhere in the country - Yolanda and I will be doing some more gigs together, the first one of which is in Milton Keynes on March 16th.... cheers Steve http://www.stevelawson.net
Hi Steve Sounds like it was a great night! Where are the other gigs and are there any in Brighton or around that neck of the woods for us seasiders to get along to? Nik -
I've checked my bass. The current pickups have staggered pole pieces, which makes a huge difference. I'd want the replacements to have the same, so it's Fender SCNs I'm afraid. Thanks for looking though.
No problem.. I think the Fender SCNs are pretty good so I'm sure that you won't be disappointed!
Come on people ! Considering there's over 2500 people registered on here only 96 want a free bass ?!
Hi Machines, Nice review and a very tempting bass... so I'm in! Email sent.. Could be fun.. if I won! Good luck to all the entrants. Nik
I was listening to Radio 2 the other night and I caught the end of a track. It had an awesome bass line which sent a really strong message from my memory banks to my spine. In fact, it was like I was hearing bass for the first time. Simple line, but strong and magical. Anyway, bloody DJ didn't say what it was so I thought and thought and played the bassline in my head a few hundred times. Then it came to me after I had hummed the tune a few times. 'The Night': Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons. Straight donw the record shop, back home, just been playing it, and I now am pretty sure where my love of bass came from, it was that track. In fact, the feel of that track has dominated everything I've ever tried to play on bass without me really realising it. I was a g**tarist at the time, but I remember hearing that track and thinking "man, the bass is EVERYTHING in that song". Pretty soon after, I had a bass. Probably explains my Precision thing also (although I'm pretty sure someone's gonna tell me it's a Jazz ). If you haven't heard that line, get a listen, really simple, but just pure bass sex C
Great song Chris, though tbh, I don't remember the bassline.. so will go and check it out now!

I played a couple about 10 years ago and they were excellent basses.. Reminded me at the time of JayDee basses for some reason.. They were certainly of that quality! I haven't seen one for years though..
Porn central..............just stunning, all of them.
+1 That '71 Jazz really does it for me! But a great Fender collection... One of the most impressive I've seen on here.

Hi Chris, Good to hear you're back! I was wondering what had happened to you, especially as there's been a few people round here been trying to take your Basschat 'buying/selling' crown!! I thought you'd finally got that date with Kylie! Moving's a pretty stressful business, so I hope it went well..When are you going to be able to play the bass again? Nik

Stop!!!! That's too nice... What are the p/ups?
It's rather mundane really Nik. At the time I joined Bassworld in early 2003 I was playing for a band called Old Blue Moses so I decided my moniker should be Oldbluebassman. This quickly got abbreviated as usual to OBBM by the forum members and when the opportunity arose to re-register after a server crash I elected to be OBBM. I left that band at the end of 2005 having complained about being short-changed by £10 for a gig and being publicly fired by the band's singer. The name stuck. The story went about saying the band needed 2 vans to go to gigs. One for the kit and the other for the egos. There you are, very boring. Perhaps we should start a new thread about band firings.
And there was me thinking it was linked to your wild tales of BBC excess but in fact, it's all about your wild experiences of rock 'n' roll excess!! A 'Spinal Tap-esque' band firings thread would be good...
You've never heard the story?
No???? Sorry for going off topic but this is good....

But what does OBBM stand for or mean? 'Overlord Bass Bash Merchant' is my guess
could be good, the man's a legend! ....if somewhat sweaty looking!!
+1 Looks like he's never had a decent night's kip, either!
Here's the new jazz .. havent had a chance to take any photos yet in decent light, so here's a temporary one that I was sent by the fella I bought it from. Stunning bass, excellent punchy clear tones and a nice weight too . I should've mentioned ... its a Custom Shop Classic V . Colour is ebony transparent , but the photo doesnt capture that very well, so I'll try sometime soon in better lighting conditions
That's a beauty, Nick!! You must come to the Bash now so we can give it a try! Or at the very least, we can take it up there for you... Very interested to know a ball park figure for what it cost? Doesn't look cheap...
Jo Have a weekend for my old bass. It is a nice bass with a good range of tones from the East preamp, and was part of the Beedster stable before Nik Al
Most things for sale here have been part of the Beedster stable at one time or another! Just to say it's a very good sounding Musicman bass, greatly improved by the John East pre..And the low B is superb! better than the Roscoe Beck 5 I have now (and they're both 34" scale necks).. I only sold it because I wanted a passive 5 string, which the Roscoe Beck is. Still looks as cool as f*** to me in the pictures (and it's nice to see my garden when there was some sunshine around!) Anyway, BUMP again for this fine bass and good luck with the sale!
It's not really a drum machine as such. There are 30 (ish) preset rhythms, adjustable only tempo and volume, its just a practice aid. Turn em on and play along!!
That describes it pretty much exactly! Limited as it is though, it's a useful tool to have around and is good for timing, listening to drum patterns, grooves etc and for a bit of fun when doing scales, exercises etc gets too boring...

Single(ish) position mode diagrams for 5 (and 4) String
silverfoxnik replied to P-T-P's topic in Theory and Technique
Cheers Pete! That's really useful - it must have taken a lot of work on your part!! And I bet it took ages as well.. Just amazes me how different these modes sound from each other, yet they're all so closely related?? Thanks again... Hope all's well with you. Nik -
Might you be interested in trading for a Stagg 3U rack bag - it's brand new, bought it less than a month ago - never left the house. Also, when you say it wasnlt an exact match, is that because the pole pieces are too wide apart or too narrow? I set the spacing on my Jazz as wide as possible. Would you be able to let me know the measurements from the edge of the pickup to the first pole piece?
Hi Bassbloke, The measurement from the edge of the pick up to the first pole piece is somewhere inbetween 8mm and 9 mm. I'll try and take a photo tomorrow and upload it for you to see.. The pole pieces were slightly too wide apart, as opposed to being too narrow. And that was OK on all the strings except for the low B, which of all the strings, needed to be most closely matched to the pole piece of the p/up to get the best definition. That's why I went back to the original Fender p/ups... To be honest, I was more after a hard case as opposed to a rack bag, as I've got one of those already. Sorry I didn't make that clear! Anyway, hope that info helps? Nik
