I have a headless status 5 string at the moment, and I really like it, but I just don't think that it's my 'ideal' bass. I'm looking for ideas as to decent kit that people have bonded with in some way. pics allowed!
This was 'the one' for me.. Stolen from our studio in 1993 and I've missed it ever since! 1978 Wal Pro2e.. I still have one now but I miss this one like mad for some reason...
 2. I went to the one last year and it was pretty cool.. Will aim to go to this one as well if I can. Thanks for the info...
 3.
I'm tempted....
I'm not surprised.. It's a stunner! And it'd make a lovely addition to your growing G&L family, Matt!! Shame you can't make the Bash next week - hope all's well with you?
 4.
Well, I've got a gorgeous '74, longscale neck with an ultra-slim body. There are a few cracks beginning to show in the finish but it still plays pretty well. The downside is that I recently used the body to create a couple of miniature reproduction models which caused a bit of damage. The two spring loaded control knobs no longer repspond as they're supposed to - they've become really sensitive, such that now when you twist them all you hear is a high-pitched squeal instead of a pleasant sound. Also the jack socket got mashed up, the fit isn't so tight now. It still works but is a bit temperamental - sometimes I have to hold the cable in my hand instead.
Only just seen this... As Johnnylager said, "genius"!!
 5.
That's an absolute beauty, stunning in black.
+1 Played a few of these over the years but sadly, never owned one. Great range of tones available.. Never quite worked out why it wasn't a more popular design than the Stingray - kind of a P-Bass vs J-Bass thing, I suppose?
 6.
Nobody likes MTD 5 stringers ?
I do; I just don't have room or the cash for one right now... FWIW, I had two MTD Kingston 5s and they were great basses, seriously underrated. The Z5 is in another league altogether though, so this must be a pretty good bass! I've always liked the asymmetric neck profile on Tobias basses.. My Roscoe Beck V has the same feature and it really makes playing a 5 string a much more comfortable experience.. Anyway, here's a free BUMP and good luck with the sale!
 7.
Aaaaargh!!! I can't take any more gorgeous Precisions
+1 Lovely bass Chris! Pretty sure it'll find a new home soon.. That new '83 looks a cracker too...
 8.
I've got one coming in that i've ordered, but there is a certain warwick streamer on here that I would prefer to own As per thread title this is brand spanking new guys, actual bass: Offers around £300 would be nice (they cost £400 new I think), as with all my gear I offer here... try before you buy is welcome (once I get it) but I will post at cost! Cheers
That's a gorgeous looking bass! Good luck with the sale!
 9.
QUOTE (mikeh @ Mar 22 2008, 05:06 PM) never say Never That should be the strapline for the Buying/Selling section on this site...
+1
 10.
133 views and not a single comment? She's getting sad that noone wants to give her a new home!
Hi Bob, Good point as many basses for sale on here get loads of comments and they're nowhere near in the same class, IMHO.. Must admit, I'm one of the 133 who viewed and didn't comment but it was more because I was having to control my GAS at that point to be honest! The phrase 'if I could, I would' springs to mind Good luck with the sale.. Look forward to meeting you at the Bash next week! Nik
 11.
I can see why you'd be happy. I think the DJ with the rosewood fretboard look like sex on a string (or 4).
+1 And as zapp said, 'Nice Bass, nice Rig! '...
 12. FINAL BUMP!! Just 1 week to go now.. Last orders, otherwise it looks like WalMan, Mert and me will be travelling in the WalMan mobile instead....
 13.
We play this one in my band, its a great song if you can pull the bassline back behind the beat far enough and there's plenty of room for some tasty high speed fills at the end of sections. I think Jermaine Jackson played bass for the Jackson 5 but someone please correct me if I'm wrong. It feels like a p-bass or variant thereof to me, but the tone does sound very consistent across the neck for a straight recording. I wonder if its been heavily compressed? There's a youtube clip I've just found here with some really bad camera work - possibly an early bootleg? I'm not sure if its Jermaine playing but its definitely a greasy p-bass. Check out the footage at 0:52 and 4:45 There's a copy of the original demo here on youtube too which makes for interesting listening. The original bass line was done on a synth it seems...
Cheers CK, That was interesting.. Very much a 'a greasy p-bass' as you say...! Sounded great to me though..
 14.
He's a bit better than pretty good.....
Just a bit
 15. Cheers Guys, Just checked Louis Johnson out on You Tube - he's pretty good!!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CslkVhOoE2U...feature=related
 16. Hi Folks, I've been listening to Michael Jackson's 'Don't Stop Till You Get enough' this morning and the bassline (or should I say basslines) is just fantastic! Brilliant sound and great playing.. Thing is, it sounds like it's more than one line, with bass synths and bass guitars working together and also doing individual parts..Some of it sounds like it's a bass guitar with a pick, or maybe that's a synth bass.. I don't know?? Whatever, it's superb and really makes the song IMHO! I know Quincy Jones produced the record but more than that, I haven't got a clue... Does anybody know more about how it was put together, who played on it etc, etc as I'd really like to know more? Cheers Nik
 17.
Sweet bass that, sweet as a nut!
+1 The CAR finish with the block inlays looks great!
 18.
Filling the hole is relatively easy. It's restoring the finish that's the difficult part. You could fill it with a wooden plug, or even just polyfilla but you'd then have to sand it all down to blend it in. After that you still have the problem of restoring the finish. No easy answer for that I'm afraid.
+1 That's why I think a luthier is the best bet, though it won't be cheap...
 19.
Bob/Nik, looks like the stag do isn't happening next weekend ( ) so I will be at the bash. Bob, I'll bring the Ovation if that's good for you? Nik, if you want the H&K it's on ebay and to be honest, the way it's looking I think you'll probably get it cheaper than the price we originally agreed (my Trace head, Marshall cab and Carlsboro power amp are there too if anyoine's interested - I could bring anything you win to Northants)! Re basses, I'm gonna bring a '70s Precision. Or two. Or three. Or..... Looking forward to catching up with the bass playing community and to talking my usual level of crap to you all in person as opposed to online Chris
Hi Chris Great news about you being able to get to the Bash and I'm looking forward to seeing you there! TBH, it wouldn't surprise me if the H&K goes over the £100 mark on Ebay because, although it's not that high in terms of bids at the moment, there's usually people waiting until right near the end of the auction before they bid. Must admit, that's what I always do and it's usually when the fun starts... So, I'll be watching with more than a little bit of interest now! Nik
 20. Great news Chris - will PM you...
 21. Hi Sam, The guy you bought it from had only just recently won it himself on Ebay so when his ad first appeared, I wondered what damage was underneath!?!? My advice would be to get a luthier to repair it properly because they can also sort out the neck for you at the same time, though it may cost a bit! Quite how you then match the black finish I don't know, but the T45 is quite a rare beast in the UK and they're great basses if the T40s are anything to go by.. So, IMHO, it'd be well worth the investment. But it all depends on the time & money I suppose? Anyway, good luck with it... Nik
 22.
My friend mentioned to me yesterday "oh I found an old bass in my dads cupboard"....."yeah? what is it"...."It says Fender Mustang on the headstock" So I immediately got him to bring it to me haha! The serial number dates it to early 1976, its in the 500,000's So yeah, what do we think?. The finish has been stripped, although a luthier friend of mine said that the lacquer coat over what is now the natural finish could still be original, as Fender tended to treat the natural bodies, then paint them!? There's one string ferrule missing from the through body stringing, and unless pearl white wasn't standard as a scratchplate style then, I'd say everything else looks original!! Si
Hi Si, 5 years ago, a shop in Brighton had a good condition 1969 Mustang and it was priced at £550.. So, maybe around £400 ish for a good condition 1976? Complete guess mind you... Hope that helps, Nik
 23.
Cheers mate, she is a real stunner in the flesh and looks a little more "amber" in normal light, but whatever angle you look it still looks phenominal! Sound wise, it is actually very versatile and the Pre amp is rather unique in that I've never had a bass with a frequency control and a cut/boost switch, and the tone control only affects the rear pickup - but this makes for some interesting results! It is very "clanky" and if you dig in it produces a really nice growly tone, and the action is spot on - handy since the neck relief cannot be adjusted due to the carbon rods in the neck. It has a pretty good tonal pallete, and it just feels so comfortable to play I couldnt put it down all day today whilst at home. Seriously, if you can get to the bash, give it play, its one of the best buy's ive ever had!
Congratulations Luke! Look forward to seeing you at the Bash and to hearing the Vigier.... You might've just about stopped smiling by then
 24. I have one of these of a similar age but in Shoreline Gold and it's a fantastic bass.. Lovely vintage tones but with much more tonal flexibility than most passive basses.. Yours looks immaculate and in that condition, it is as you say a bit of a rarity - especially now that the 5 strings models are no longer made! Good luck with the sale and have a free bump!
