1.
Hi Guys, I am as fresh to the bass scene as it gets but I have a few mates who play electric guitar but not bass. I want to play mainly hard rock/metal but I will possibly use in my church music group too. These are the models I am considering, has anyone got any experience of these models (good or bad) and which would be the best option? 1) Epiphone Toby Deluxe IV (probably my favourite in terms of how it looks) 2) ESP Ltd B-10 3) Ibanez GSR200
My ESP LTD B-1004 is up for sale and might suit you Mail me if you'd like to know more.
  2. Looks like this'll be up on evilBay at the weekend...any takers before then would be most welcome...
  3. Any takers? Would make a great back up bass or an inexpensive (but quality) gigging bass. Don't forget it comes with a hard case and I'll ship it for around £30. Bargain!
  4. Personally, I liked the girl on the piano..........
  5.
Aaaaaaaaaw yeah! That's a cracking LTD all right. Proper high quality model, no cheapy here (not that LTD ever feel cheap). I wish you luck with the sale, much as I love ESP / LTD I prefer the Forest series myself. Nonetheless, great bass. Seriously, if this sits on here with little interest I'll wonder what's going on around this place.
Thanks Kongo She's a very pretty bass in the flesh and well put together too. Here's hoping. Sensible offers considered.
  6.
Wow, very nice rig and bass! How would you describe the sound of the Ashdown compared to Ampeg or Trace Elliot? z
Erm.... Never had an Ampeg rig so I couldn't say how it would compare with a comprable set up from Ampeg. I did have a Trace rig a few years ago and although that was a 2x10 combo with a 1x15 ext cab, I would say that the Trace was a bit brighter. Having said that there are so many eq options on the Ashdown as well as the Trace, including a crompressor, that you can pretty much dial up any sound you want. As I said I've not used my Ashdown in anger yet but just by using at home and rattling a few windows, I've got a sound that I like which will probably only require minimal tweeking for rehearsal/gig situations. Not sure if that helped or not but I'm pleased you like it.
  7. Hi all The arrival today of rather wonderful Jazz Bass means that my B-1004 is up for sale. You can find these new on ebay for about £960, I'm looking for £350 for mine, which includes a Stagg Hardcase. I will ship which will cost approx £30 but I will get a firm quote for a serious enquiry. Naturally collection is welcome, I based in Burgess Hill, West Sussex. Now to the bass. Here is the link to ESP's web site which has all the specs: http://www.espguitar...uxe/b-1004.html ......and here are the photos: There is one dink And what seems to be a small flaw in the finish on the back of the bass The bass is about 3 years old and as you can see the headstock design has changed slightly from then. The neck is slim, smaller than my Jazz and the action is set low - truss rod works as it should. It plays really well and for those who want to know it's quite light at 8lbs (according to my bathroom scales). All the electrics work fine and you can achive some very usable sounds from the EMG pickups. The hardware is Hipshot. All in all this is very comfortable bass to play and needs a good home. I'm selling it becuase I've decided to go back to Passive Basses after years of being battery driven. I can supply further hi res photos and naturally you are welcome to try it on for size. Please ask any questions and I'll reply to all serious offers - no trades though please. Thanks for looking
  8. Hi All After 2 years of not playing or in band the itch has returned. Having sold nearly all my gear on here and ebay I have beed quietly re-building my gear and here it is. The Ashdown rig I bought from fellow bass chatter and top bloke Ozzy138 (Dave). The Jazz arrived this morning from Bass Direct. Worth a few words of praise for Mark S at Bass Direct - he was really helpful and nice guy to do business with. The bass is fabulous...very happy. Got a jam session coming up on Tuesday with the making of a new band - can't wait to turn this baby up! Happy Days Now I've decided to go "old school" with a passive bass, no more batteries. This does mean I have my old bass to sell... New post coming soon in the for sale section.
  9. NIce Bass, no chance of sending by courier I suppose...
  10. Just bought Dave's Ashdown Klystron 500 Amp and 410 cab. The rig is in great condition and Dave is great guy to do business with. Dave, if you every want to sell your 'ray please give me first refusal... Many many thanks John
  11. ...and mine, nice amp with some usuable extra features
Yep, that's my choice too
12.
One of my earliest bass influences was Jack Bruce's performances on Cozy Powell's Over The Top LP (yes, it was that long ago). I just looked it up on Spotify. The LP isn't on there but most of the tracks are there. An early transcription was 'Sweet Poison' which I just played for the first time on probably 30 years and I remembered every note! Great sound, great ideas. The tracks are: 1."Theme One" - 3:36 (George Martin) 2."Killer" - 7:16 (Don Airey/Gary Moore) 3."Heidi Goes to Town" - 2:57 (Cozy Powell/Don Airey) not on Spotify 4."El Sid" - 5:09 (Bernie Marsden) not on Spotify 5."Sweet Poison" - 8:24 (Max Middleton) - a real favourite!! 6."The Loner" - 4:50 (Max Middleton) (Dedicated to Jeff Beck) 7."Over The Top" - 8:39 (Don Airey/Cozy Powell) - Rock largess personified!! Every one a winner (there are some 'odd' moments but I loved it when I was 17 or so). I also heard a live session they did on Radio One which included Bruce's Tickets To Waterfalls which I had a cassette of which is long gone. Shame. It was a great gig.
I had this on LP and his follow up, which I think was called Tilt. Really liked both of them. Sadley no longer have them ( But thanks for the reminder - happy days!
  13.
There's plenty of Status owners here so maybe someone can help me ! Am in a position potentially to acquire a Status S2 Classic (headed, 5 string), I know what they sound like to a degree (seen enough Mark King impressions to last a life time) but how versatile are they ? I would want to be able to roll off the zingy top end if possible and get other sounds out of it too, what is the neck pickup like soloed for example ?. Any links to videos or soundclips (I couldn't any that weren't slapping) are appreciated ! Also, with the bridge pickup so close to the bridge doesn't it sound a bit thin ? Thanks chaps.
Had the privalage of owning a (headed 5 string) Series 2 a few years and it was fantastic, there was no sound I couldn't get with it, the 3 band eq was great and there is the "bright switch" to add to the pallet of sounds. It sounded huge - the one bass I deeply regret selling
  14.
Hi, I was lucky enough to win the TC Elecronics BG500 combo in Decembers issue of Bass Guitar Magazine. Many thanks to Bruce and his team at TC for such a fantastic prize, the combo is excellent and I'm sure it's the only amp I'll ever need. Yesterday John from Outer Limits Band came around and put the amp through it's paces, he's got many years experience and thought the amp was amazing! Once again, thanks a lot TC.
Many congrats on winning - I entered as well and wondered who won (not that I'm envious on anything............. ) Wonder how many BC'ers also entered? Will probably be getting one soon anyway
  15.
I know, thanks. I'm trying to sort it but think I might need a grown up to help me
looks like it's a .zip file, I think you'll need to re-save it as a jpeg and re-attached, should work then :0)
  16.
Im sorry but was it me or as per usual, was every band bass player on the show tonight slinging a precision or a jazz WTF? Dont get me wrong, i love em but FFS whats that saying about every young bass player in a commercially successful band, sheep or what? Or does the "evil" empire of Leo have the industry's balls in a vice like grip of kudos and commercial nounce? - Discuss....
Just watched this episode (via Sky Box) and the first band on was Friendly Fires and the bass player was using a Peavey. Saw Geddy was playing a Jazz (well several in fact) last night at the O2, good enough for me!
  17.
I was at the O2 last night, brilliant show - I was in the 2nd row right in front of Ged. Got a load of pics, I'll edit and post the good ones later. I think he played about 5 different Jazzes over the course of the night, I can't remember when each was used and for what song, but here's some facts I do know - can anyone else flesh out the rest? 1. Black signature bass with new neck (pearloid slab markers, white neck binding) 2. Drop-D tuned Jazz for Stick It Out 3. Red Jazz pictured above for 2112, I think tuned DGCF No fretless this time - as used on Malignant Narcissim from the last tour. Any ideas about the others? The steampunk setting was cool - even the bass/midi pedals got the treatment.
Was there too, but a bit further back. Lots of Jazzes - he used a Sunburst for a few songs. Great show really enjoyed it
  18.
Here's a blast from the past http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MxijgJWdFWY
Completely forgotten about this song, thanks for the reminde - Dennis Dunway is a great player.

  20.
Ever tried Partysounds ?
Partysounds is pretty good IMO. Worth a tickle and it's free.
  21. Not wishing to hi-jack this thread but if there was someone interested in buying this bass then my White 61 P is available for a similar cash price of £2800 ono. I'm told that it's had a re-fin in the early 70's (but I don't know for sure) very worn but still very playable and sounds fab! All original pots and hardware, except the thumb rest - no bridge or pick-up covers though. New Fender case. Here's a few pics - more can be supplied for the seriously interested, I'm in Sussex but am prepared to ship if needed. PM me if you'd like to know more.
  22.
Relax - FGTH, just for the sheer bloody mindedness of a one note bassline, and the fact that it somehow makes for a brilliant song...
Apparently the original demo version of the song had much more of slap-type bass line and very busy, but Trevor "Buggles" Horn pared it down to the bare minimum. Proof that less is more I guess.
  23. I do and here's a pic of me playing my Precision to prove it Vintage - 1961
  24.
I know lots of people dislike the guy, because of what they read and see of him in the meejah, but this isn't about that. This is about the fact he is a fabulous pop and rock bassist. I realise some of the qualities below are because he is a singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, but most of the celebrated pop and rock bassists are aswell, like Geddy Lee, Chris Squire, Paul McCartney. It is why I can't get into Jaco, Wooten, Alain Caron, etc. They are not songwriters, they are instrument operators with enormous facility. To me they are making bass a solo instrument, which I don't like at all. Compared to other solo-inclined instruments, it is simply far too limited, both in timbre and potential for compelling expression, beyond the odd song or two. Which is why most solo-type bassists all do more-or-less the same thing. It's like the difference between a sax and a tuba. I don't want to hear a tuba solo, do you? That's just my view you understand. Sting Qualities: He uses the bass to get the most from his songs. He uses the bass to get the most from his vocal. He uses the bass to create atmoshere and make the song breathe. He creates bass lines which are interesting and inspiring as well as doing the above. He varies his bass lines throughout the song in a compelling way, with many rhythmic, melodic and harmonic accents and grace notes. He improvises and jazzes up his bass lines in a live setting which adds a lot of interest to the interplay with the rest of the band. He gets good tones. He plays very sensitively and knows when to accent and when to hold back. Most of all, he understands the multiple roles of the bass and uses them appropriately and to maximum effect in the song. I believe he does this instinctively. I think he's a bit of a genius on bass. What do you think?
+1 from me. Seen him play live several times and always enjoyed the new ways he reworked his material, both his own and The Police's. Always thought that he's a great musician and song writer and plays what needs to be played to make the song work. Nuff sed really.
