So How Do You Rate GK Cabs Over Other Brands?
Urban Bassman replied to x_Morning_Star_x's topic in Amps and Cabs
I would say go for it! I used to have a 700RB II and an RBH410. Couldn't fault the sound in anyway. The cab is very heavy so the NEO loaded cabs might be better if you value your back! I've used Trace Elliot, TC and Mark Bass amps and cabs since and the GK was easily as good IMO. -
Yep, and always ready to give the soundcrew a ciggie and buy them a pint, no matter how tiny and crappy the gig is and how much of a bunch of twats the rest of Fairport are being about the sound.... (I speak from bitter experience)
Novel place to keep your plectrum.....

Thought I'd add a couple more the mix. Firstly though +1's to: Neil Murray Dennis Dunaway Pete Trewavas Glen Hughes Gezzer Butler They were all my list but already mentioned New ones Eric Czar - A great player. Saw him play live with the first incarnation of Joe Bonamassa's trio. Greatly impressed by his feel and tone. Now does mostly solo stuff. Worth checking him out if you don't know his work. Laurence Cottle - Session work and composer, he also demo's for GB Basses Saw him play a duet with Jeff Berlin a few years ago and I thought he played better stuff than Jeff did.

Wishbone Ash, trip down memory lane soon.
Urban Bassman replied to tonybassplayer's topic in General Discussion
I saw them back in the late 70's at the Rainbow in London - this was the Martin Turner, Andy Powell, Laurie Wisefield and Steve Upton line up - I think. Yes very loud but very good. -
My first bass rig, when I started playing again in 2000, was a MkIV Series 400 through Peavey 2x10 and 1x15 cabs. The amp was quite heavy and built like a tank. Got many comments about how good it sounded. It finally died when the power supply quit on me during a rehearsal but it must have 20 years old at that point, so pretty good going all in all. Definitely loud enough and had plently of tone shaping options. I bought a GK rig (700RB II with a RBH410 cab) after that and I have to say it blew the Peavey away in terms of power, tone and managing the low end generally - fab

I think my Jazz and Ashdown Klystron 500 and matching 4x10 sound fab together. A great match I think.

Several of my guitarist buddies use PRS guitars and I've always been impressed by the build quality, sound and finish of thier guitars. From the pics it looks like these basses will have the same attention to detail. There seems to be a many different finish and hardware options, some of which would look fab I'm sure. Would love to have a go on one....one day...hopefully.

The new bass from 2013 PRS - Gary Grainger 4 and 5 http://www.prsguitars.com/garygrainger4/ Looks like it's a production bass and not a special/private stock item. Can't seem to find a price for it as yet...but I would expect it be many £Ks. But I have to say I'm feeling more than a little GAS-ey for it... DV 247 has a bit about it here: http://www.dv247.com/news/PRS%20Introduces%20New%20Grainger%20Bass%20Guitars/133373 Does anyone else know any more about it?
I use Line6 lowdown Studio 110. It´s bit more powerful (75w) but it is quite decent amp for bedroom and also for small practice room with quiet band. I got it used and it was cheaper than new Ampeg BA108. I am not very big fan of 8´ speakers, It just sounds too thin to me even for quiet practicing, but it is just my taste. if you need to practice while your son sleeping, I would also ho with some kind of pandora or Vox amplug and headhones (or Apple device with pocketGK app).
+1 from me on the Line6 110. It has some very usable sounds, got headphones-out and a line-in if you want to play along plus a very usable line-out for recording. Nuff Sed

ANY DECENT TECH/SERVICE CENTER FOR BASS IN LONDON?
Urban Bassman replied to diogio's topic in Repairs and Technical
Same here - no point looking anywhere else IMO -
And welcome from another Burgess Hillian - although "Urban" is probably a bit strong for our little town I work in Fontwell so should pop over one lunchtime to see your place. Cheers, Mike
I do a great frothy coffee - just bring the biscuits

Demo recording studio recommendations - Horsham/West Sussex area
Urban Bassman replied to ikay's topic in Recording
You could also try Sound Central in Bolney, just down the road from you. They have a nice live room. http://www.soundcentralstudios.co.uk/ I know the owner Aidey - top fellow. Just tell him that John Wilson sent you along, he'll look after you. -
Indeed welcome, from a fellow West Sussex-er - Burgess Hill. Plenty to see and do here.
Can't seem to find anywhere that sells a gig bag to hold two basses!! The mono dual case is out of my price range so looking for cheaper alternatives
Ritter make them. http://www.ritter-bags.com/index.php?id_range=&id_type=8&id_model=76 Used to use one myself a few years ago. Great quality.
Andy's Sweet' singer is Pete Lincoln, he's not a yank, Geordie I think but he doesn't sound like it; before him it was Tony O'Hora who is now on keys & 2nd guitar & before him it was Mal McNulty who is now on vox with Slade. They should get revolving doors in them nostalgia bands these days! I've been going to Sweet gigs for about 8 years + & this is the best line-up I've heard. Steve Priest, the original bassist has his own Sweet in the USA but it seems to be more of a heavy rock band doing Sweet covers with some bloke on bass wearing a cape - I don't rate them.
The bloke in the cape is Steve Priest....he's put a few pounds on since 1977... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S-dm3XkvJ-M http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hsT6AhdOoEw nice bass though.
Night off. I'll be 'Hitchhiking' with my towel and a very interesting book...

I could be mistaken, but isn't 'Oliver's Army' played on a fretless? It certainly sounds like it on the bridge. As for being 'lost in the mix', I've never had that problem. Is there any particular reason that not having frets would mean you'd be 'lost in the mix'? Dan
Funnily enough I'm working on this very song.... Personnally I don't think it is a fretless - IMHO it sounds like a fretted Precision played with a fair amount of attitude! Which is how I intend to play it but with a Jazz

The S1 switch that was fitted to Jazzes a while back gives the Jazz a "P" sound - mine does and although it's not quite a full on P it's pretty close IMO. Better than butchering a perfectly goodJazz Bass I reckon.
-
Oh yes he is Da-Man. Seen Yes live many times and CS delivered the goods every time. And he is the reason I play the bass. nuff sed

I was just going to say that it's with Andy He's had it for some time, it's a commission sale I believe.

Here's my recently acquired 2005 CAR Jazz. I think it's fab - probably the nicest bass I've ever owned
