Probably just a bad solder joint. When I got my Fender, I freaked out because the bridge pickup wasn't working. When I opened the pickguard a little, it seemed there was a wire pinched between guard and body, I slid that back into the cavity, rescrewed the pickguard down, and it worked perfectly. Never had a moments issue since, even now, years later. Might be worth popping the control plate open and having a look, at least.

Nordstrand make 'em, Delano and Seymour Duncan will do it as a custom option.

Looks very much like an Antoniotsai, and the G&B preamp would be right for that, IIRC.

I have a set of Daddario tapes on mine now, truly gorgeous sound.

Yeah, it's a bit, uuh, un-pretty, and angular, but on the plus side, it's very adjustable and hefty. The biggest downside for me is the way it's designed, you need super long strings for it, which delightfully, DR Red Devils are!

Awesome basses, I picked one up a year or two ago now, and still love it, though I did mod mine quite a bit. Neck felt exactly the same as any Rickenbacker I've played.

"They're awesome!" probably answers this well. Plus, with pretty much no other aftermarket neck options, it's probably the only game in town for a fretted to fretless mod, or the reverse.

Cetera's white 80's Spector NS-2 with the Haz-Lab pre would be the one I think, even though I do mostly play 5ers now.

Shame they don't have a maple fretboard, or a matching headstock for the rosewood board.

There you have it, Ultra J's, Sadowsky Pre, dropped into a cherry picked Squier VM or CV Jazz, bet it'd be a winner.

Sadowsky sells his onboard pre-amps, I'd imagine them and some good J pickups(Dimarzio Area J's maybe?) would nail that sound.

IIRC Thomastic Jazz Rounds/Flats are balanced.

They seem almost as unhappy as you are, and with good reason. Even though it's not their fault, a lot of people are gonna blame them anyway, such is life. I'm sure they'll sort you out, though.
