1. I've a Dimarzio X2N-7 in a bass and it sounds mighty. Some kind of Jackson stock humbucker in another which is quite good. And I have a SSH Strat I rigged up as a super short scale bass, and kept the stock pickups, with no issues. That said, if you want a bass pickup in guitar humbucker size, there are a few options, EMG make both active and passive, Rio Grande make some called Pitbulls(I have one, it's pretty sweet), or you can find NOS Gibson bass pickups from their old Les Paul basses on eBay from time to time. I got a pair of them once, incredible sounding pickups.
2.
Use the B as a thumb-rest!!! If you choose a "high-fiver", Do consider tuning it DGCFBb (all down a tone (I think that's right)) That covers a lot of contemporary music..
I like that tuning, and if you wanna get low, you can do a drop tuning, and get low C, heh, C-G-C-F-Bb, best of a 6er's range there.
3. Yeah, that's about it. You wanna get it low enough for a *slight* buzz, but not enough to choke the string off.
4. As you mentioned yourself in the OP, Warwick, they're 16.5mm standard(and sound great fretless, by all accounts). They can come wider though, in their broadneck models.
5. Been looking about their site since, so many incredible instruments.... This buckeye Jazz is mind bogglingly awesome...
6.
I'm starting to use that way too since the new look...
Same here!
7. I found these neck thickness specs on their site. Thickness I fret 21 mm Thickness XII fret 23 mm Anyone know how they compare to more popular 4 and 5 string basses?
8.
Add about 25%, that's what you'll pay the postie before he hands it over to you.
Thought it was 21% tax in Ireland, and 18% in England, or are you including the shipping price too? FWIW, I've bought quite a few basses from the US, no trouble, but I've always gone through stores, or eBay stores.
9. I have a VM J Fretless, which I put a fretted P neck on, and think the pickups sound quite awesome, but you gotta have 'em pretty close to the strings to get the most out of them.
10. Pretty much cross posting this question from a thread I started on Talkbass(in hindsight, more likely to get the info I need here). Anyone here got one(well, I know there's one or two floating about(for sale at least)), haven't found much info through searches about them. Main question is about the neck profile, I know it's wide at 19mm, but how does it feel, what kind of profile, thick or thin front to back?
11. AFAIK, all you need to do is get different pots for the volume/blend controls to use active pickups with a pre-amp.
12. StewMac or Warmoth in the US, or Thomann in Germany should have exactly what you need.
13.
If you've ever heard them live, there's more bass comes out of Phil Campbell's guitar than Lemmy's bass
From what I've read, he uses all three pickups on, and sets his amps eq at bass 0, treble 0, mids 10.
14. If I could get on with 19mm, I'd be so all over this, 24 frets, blocks & binding, blackburst, Nordies, Glock 3 band pre...... soo yum! Anyone got a Jabba 5er, if so, what's the neck like front to back?
15. Wrestler Hulk Hogan played bass for years before being a wrestler, mentions in his book a major preference for fretless. Seemingly kept it up too, as there are recent enough clips of him playing on youtube. Another Wrestler/Singer Chris Jericho played bass for years when he was younger. The fellow from Penn & Teller also plays upright, gigs with the opening band before his magic shows.
16.
Looks like it should have a moose head on it and a billiards table nearby
I think that's the idea, looks to me like it was carved straight out of a whiskey soaked bar counter, with a knife. Even got all the brass/gold for the handrail, hah!
17. Now look at this, http://www.tcellisguitars.com/Lemmy_Bass_Repairs.html
18.
What is the top on that, it looks amazing?
Looks like figured mahogany to me. Gorgeous stuff, whatever it is.
