Pro's and Con's of jazz bass pups in series?
nick replied to bubinga5's topic in Repairs and Technical
I've done it to my Warmoth Jazz/P Frankenstein. Definitely worth doing, gives another option. Gives an almost P-Bass thump to a jazz. Used this diagram myself Series/Parallel Jazz Bass , but used a push-pull tone pot as opposed to volume, as I wanted it out of the way. It's a reversible mod too. -
Like it, nice grooves going on there. You could probably bring a lot to it as well. Good luck with the rehearsal!

An early 70's Fender Musicmaster through a HH VS 100w head & a 2x12 Fane loaded guitar cab. Wish I still had all of it.... Shifted it to move on to a Westone Thunder 1A & 4x10 Session combo. It was acceptable in the 80's
Varoooom, is a bassists equivalent to a matadors cape.
Good analogy of 'Varooom' Steve Love a bit of varooom myself. Seem to remember John Taylor also being an exponent of this technique back in the day. Not enough varooom in today's music, definitely due a comeback.
Chingo123 is fine. I've dealt with him in the past and would do so again. Shipping by ship is fine too - but boy does 6 weeks feel like a long time when you are waiting for your bass to show up ..
Thanks OldGit. It is a long time to wait, but I'm trying to keep costs down - sea freight is significantly cheaper than other options. Plus , got other pieces of Japcrap to play in the meantime.

Hi All, Hoping for any advice from anyone that's bought from Japan. I've seen a bass I particularly like on Ebay from seller Chingo123 Firstly, was wondering if anyone's had any experience with this seller before(?) He's got 99.7% positive feedback, but who knows... Secondly, to cut costs down, I'm considering going for sea freight option of despatch. Half the the price of SAL. I'm not concerned about the delivery time 6-8 weeks, as I can wait. But has anybody had any experiences, bad or good with sea freight, is it a no-no? Much appreciate any opinions. Thanks
Whatcha got planned for that V-Type then? Is the Ampeg lighter?
Not much in it weightwise - both are bulky! Just a different tone. At present, plan to keep the V-Type, still like it.

Hi All, A friend of mine has acquired an Ampeg SVT1000 amp. Quite like it despite it being SS, think it has a nice sound to it. I know they're discontinued, but can anybody advice on a fair price to pay for it, should he decide to sell it & I decide to buy it? Many thanks

Bought an MXR Octaver from this evening. Item as described & a fair price. Had a nice chat, top bloke. Cheers
this is going to sound stupid as im sure noel redding most likely just had loads of gain on his amp but the crispy tone in songs like wait until tommorow is kinda what i was after... hope that helps?
From what I've tried, I would suggest a Fulltone Bassdrive or maybe a Bad Monkey to get that tone.

Finally joining the 'covers/function' scene
nick replied to Musicman20's topic in General Discussion
Good for you Musicman20! Done exactly the same myself. Been doing it for a year or so. I'm a newcomer so can't give any tips, but I do love it & I'm learning all the time. Appreciating all the the hints & tips in this thread. Started with a couple of crap local outfits, but finally found a good band. It is a start-up, but the other members are seasoned semi-pros & it's moving along great. Got some bookings for later on this year & lately even managing to get a few dep jobs with other bands. Like a lot musicians who play in originals outfits I used to (naively) laugh at cover/function bands. Don't know what happened, think I finally had enough of the egos, playing to small unappreciative crowds for no money, unprofessionalism etc... It's bettered my playing immensely, given me the oppurtunity to meet other relatively sane musos, plus allows me to get away with playing other styles like slap etc... that I'd never do. I also like the irony of re-learning songs (albeit to a higher standard) that I did when starting on bass.. .Disco Inferno, Carwash, Born to be Wild etc... Would recommend it to anyone musically in a rut, who wants to improve their playing & technique. -
Without a doubt Zvex (IMO). What's the deal with those amateur looking child-like daubings on their effects? Don't like the look of those day-glo DHA ones either - sorry!

How about an octaver of some sort, or maybe an envelope/low pass filter?

Liking the new material a lot. Favourite is the Mark E. Smith collaboration 'Glitter Freeze'
whoops, yes I forgot to add...yes totally agree you can really slap those Ernie Ball flatties too, you get a very bright pop from the G string...I just sold my RBX-374 with the EB's onboard...so my BB614 slap monster is gonna get a set of those Group III's too.....
Love the slap tone from Chromes too.
I thought Maya's were pretty good. I actually preferred the Jazz one I tried to a Aria Pro II I had at the time (1988-ish). The Maya felt a bit more rugged.
I think like a lot of stuff from the Jap makers, they can vary. I've had a Maya P-Bass & a 4001S Rickenfaker. Both were good particularly the Ricky copy, but I've also seen other Maya basses & guitars that I wouldn't touch with a bargepole. -
Bass-novice here, as you're probably aware still. I've been playing around a bit with different techniques, and one of the things that's obvious is that mixing rounded finger style tones with slapping and popping is impossible because of the volume differences. In the guitar world I'd throw a compressor at it (I love compression on guitar anyway, especially clean guitar) but on a bass it just seems to muddy-up the tone. Would I be correct in thinking that what is really required here is limiting, to prevent the enormous peaks in signal breaking through? I quite like the sound of just the bass + amp, and don't want to spoil that. My instinct would be to put a volume pedal after the limiter in the signal chain, thus controlling both peaks and overall volume without sucking life from the tone.
Bit of a late convert to compression myself, so not an expert by any means. Was previously fairly anti-compressions for all the usual reasons; taking dynamics away..etc However, use one now. Settled on an EBS MultiComp, which doesn't muddy anything up & is pretty transparent. However, don't use one for everything I do, only really for covers/function band stuff. From what you say you want, I would suggest a limiter. Apart from the usual arguments regarding durability etc, would recommend the Behringer BLE 100, or possibly the GLX Bass Limiter which is in a more robust enclosure. Both are a pretty cheap way of finding out if that's what you need.

Hooky's side projects Monaco & Revenge

For the function band; nothing but a bit of occaisional compression. For originals band; anything I can get my hands on, except compressor!
Me, none except for a compressor. (pictured below) frankly speaking unless you are Doug Wimbish, or Stuart Hamm, if you play in a band doing covers or playing a particular style you'll find you'll hardly use effects. We are not guitarists after all we don't need any of that w@nking stuff I've gone through a lot of effects pedals and ended up selling them all back because to me they just add unwanted noise to the otherwise beautiful natural sound of a bass going through a decent amp. When you play in a band your singer and your drummer need to rely on your fundamental backbone, not your echo, chorus flairs, or wah wah sweeps, no Sir. This is all I take with me.
Hard words, but despite being an effects junkie myself, have to agree with you on all the above. *But, love fuzz!!
