I've just seen an Epiphone EA-260 go for £200 on eBay which seems a steal. What can you tell me about them? A 70s version of the Gibson hollow?
Wouldn't pay any more than that, but not bad considering it's vintage & with the Matsumoko connection, though would expect it to be in good nick. Not really a version of anything Gibson. They were a budget model at the time with bolt-on shortscale neck & totally hollow maple laminate body. Epiphone EA-260 catalogue It's similar in construction to my Commodore, no doubt same factory...which is easy to play, lightweight, good tone, fun to dig into. If you fancy a proper vintage hollowbody, relatively inexpensive & that's not deep bodied .... Have you considered an Epiphone EA-260 / 5120? Alternatively, you could try looking out for an Aria 5120 or Univox,Conrad models that are believed to have come from the same factory. I picked up this late 60's Commodore a while back dirt cheap. Has a bridge dampener (need to put it back on) & ridiculously powerful 15k single coil pickup . After a bit of a set-up & some frets dressed, plays lovely & a has great tone with flats; plenty of thump, but can nail that Gnarls Barkley sound too. The only bad thing about it, is the crap tuners which I intend to change one day. They crop up on Ebay fairly frequently, worth trying IMO if you find a good one.

Acid House 1990 Up until then was just playing the usual bog-standard indie style basslines, but like a lot of people found myself going to certain clubs of Manchester at the time. That type of music totally opened my hears (and mind) to how a simple well played bassline, can groove so much more, than something frantic or flashy. After that, next point was rediscovering Northern Soul & Motown, which I had liked at school (was a mod); another form of dance music with great examples of interplay between bass & drums.
Got an Animato for possible sale. I bought it when I went to Japan in summer 2007 and I think I've used it about 3 times. As much as I love owning something incredibly rare, I am also thinking about a new amp/bass/other effects, and I don't really use much fuzz in my band. So here's the feeler thread, does anyone want to buy I'd also consider full/part exchange with a number of things really: I'm thinking about dabbling in a low-end 6 string, considering a decent multi-fx unit and I could also do with a new amp of moderate power. I reckon the going rate for these things is somewhere in the region of £200 or so, tempt me with some offers! In addition I also have a Shin-Ei Companion FY-2 fuzz pedal. This is another rare fuzz, used by Colin Greenwood of Radiohead fame on Exit Music, Mixymatosis and others. Not quite sure of the market value of these, perhaps someone can help me out? I know they're incredibly rare though!
I sold an old Kimbara version of FY-2 sometime ago for £160 - not bad for a £2 carboot find! Though I'm no longer a fan of Ebay, think you might be best putting it on there. Obviously include the Radiohead, Jesus & the Marychain etc references in your listing, along with the usuals 'vintage' 'collectable' 'MIJ'.... You may get as much as I did. Good luck!
Hi all, Have a beautiful mexican 60's re-issue Jazz which I love. My only dissapointment is the pots. Could anyone advise me on the best replacement pots to get, seems like CTS is the standard and linear for volume and audio for tone. Any advice would be much appreciated, also, would changing the pots change the tone which I don't want to do. Cheers. Ossie
CTS are generally are considered by many to be the best. 250k Log or audio for volume, & linear for tone, though most cases audio will do for all. I do like the Sprague orange drop caps though.

I'm breaking my Jazz/Precision hybrid. Though it's a cracking bass, can't see there being that much demand for a Jazz with P neck.... [s]Brandoni alder Jazz body. Nice weight @ 2.4kg. Spray can nitro'd in CAR. Relic'd with plenty of dings - plenty of mojo . Good quality body made in Japan for Brandoni. £55 inc. P&P[/s] *SOLD* [s]WD Parts R/W Precision neck. Oil finished, nice feel & plays great, with a 'F*nder Precision' decal! £55 inc. P&P[/s] *SOLD* [s]Jazz Control Plate with knobs & pots wired with series/parallel push-pull switch (tone pot). This is a useful function IMO, almost gets a P-Bass tone. £10 inc. P&P[/s] *SOLD* [s]Schaller Tuners In good cond., as expected; rock solid at holding in tune. £25 inc. P&P [/s] *SOLD* W-B-W Jazz Pickguard £8 inc. P&P [s]Sturdy no-name High Mass Bridge with string through body option, inc. screws £10 inc. Posted this before, but any excuse to show it again.... My Ibanez belonged to Paul Ryder from Happy Mondays. He used it on their first two albums, videos, Top of the Pops etc... & it's probably been round the World a few times prior to me getting it. If a bass could talk; this one would no doubt, have some cracking tales to tell!

Dep for a 'pig roast' in Colerne village, somewhere in the wilds of Wiltshire, last night. Thankfully wasn't what I imagined it to be, after seeing 'Deliverance' Open air on the back of a lorry - was a bit cold & not easy humping a Trace rig up onto it - lightweight rigs are seeming more attractive these days. Band played a mix of R&B,ska & rock'n'roll... finale was a 15 minute version of 'Born to be Wild' with a slap solo! According to the organisers there 300 people were there, but didn't look like it me. Good gig though & I enjoyed it.

Just the one usually. P-Bass with flats for R&B,soul,disco,60's etc gigs & a P-Bass with rounds for 80's,indie,rock gigs. If it's a wedding might take a back-up, though I've never had to needed to. Manage to get get enough variations in tone for what I do from one bass & my fingers or a pick.

Latest stuff from Killing Joke

I like his playing. Don't think he's the greatest technical bass player & not a massive fan of the Beatles either, but played enough of his basslines now in various cover bands to appreciate what he came up with, was right for the song. Plenty of good memorable hooks too.
Fairly sure at this point that this guy is posting these threads and not reading them. Still not figured what he is hoping to achieve. They are quite bizarre.
Spotted this post as I've got a soapbar with tri-sound switch on my old Ibanez, was interested to hear some points of view etc... I think a forum can be sometimes be like a pub..... you do get all sorts, a wide variety of clientele I guess.

Played Portishead Working Mens Club last night with a 60's Beat music/Motown covers band I joined a week ago. sh*t hot jazz drummer held it down well, grooved everything along - joy to play with. Good gig, nice appreciative audience - enjoyed it.
Hi There, I'd look out for a Japanese bass. There are often lots of used models around the £300 mark. You can pick up an old Ibanez bass such as a "blazer" or "roadstar" or loads of other manufacturers did P-bass clones. Check out the JapCrap thread in the Ebay section on basschat. I bought an early 80's Japanese Tokai in (yellowed) olympic white, best £220 I've ever spent, is now my main bass. There is lots of Japanese stuff out there, search on here or "MIJ" ,"CIJ" or "Japanese bass" on ebay. You can't go far wrong, there are several JapCap resident experts on basschat, who can advise better than me. Do you really want a brand new bass? Don't think I'd ever buy a new instrument ever again (unless some treated me!) I have not experience of VM squires, though I do love the fiesta red one. Cheers Neil
+1 to the above. For £300 or less, you can pick-up a quality MIJ bass, if you look around. If you can find an old Tokai that's good & reasonably priced, bag it, same for an Ibanez Blazer. Will also at least keep it's value should you choose to move it on in the future. TBH think you'll get a better deal off here than off ebay. Once you find a bass with 'MIJ', 'Japan' etc... in the listing on ebay the bidding generally starts going up. Recently got a nice '91 MIJ Squier off here at a bargain price.

I modded a CS-3 as per the one on the Ovnilab site, which I also understand to be pretty much the 'Humphrey' mod. Transformed it into a cracking bass compressor!
-
Though Jamerson is synonymous with Motown bass; Bob Babbitt, Tony Newton, Wilton Felder etc... are also worth checking out.

Bought a lovely MIJ Squier P-Bass off Russ. Good communications & no messing about - straight forward deal. Thoroughly recommended. Cheers

Hi, Here's my old V-Type. Just replaced the JJ Tesla's I previously put in it, with a pair of Harma (cryo) Telefunken ECC803S clones - lovely warm tone, but still punchy. The matching 4x12 has a monster sound, fills the room, but weighs a ton! For smaller gigs I use a Kappalite loaded 1x15 '1153' cab.

I got round this problem on a 70's Maya Rickenfaker I once had, by just adding a couple of small but deep plastic washers on the screws.

Sold my EHX Octave Multiplexer to Rick. Good guy to deal with, fast payment, no messing around. Recommended.

Good work - thanks

Advice for taking care of my Hybrid amp
nick replied to DaveMuadDib's topic in Repairs and Technical
VERY reassuring. Is it worth keeping spares, or are they the kind of thing that start to age as soon as they leave the factory and I'd be better off buying them as-and-when?
Definitely good idea to have spares. I whipped out the crappy Chinese ones that came with my Trace V-Type & replaced them with something better. Keep them as spares in my gig bag, in case the nice Harma ones ever go. Worth treating yourself to a good preamp valve, it will make improve the tone. Many to choose from... all different flavours -
As the title. Free to anyone who'll cover postage, or pick up from Milton Keynes.
PM'd
