Frank Aust (Bristol) 0117 960 3589 He keeps Hugh Cornwell & Gypie Mayo's (along with many others) stuff working, & makes a good cup of tea for while you wait - that's good enough for me.

Do the basslines/players on these tunes have flats on?
As far as I'm aware, Bernard Edwards rarely changed his strings on both his Precision and Stingrays but all of which were strung with roundwound strings, never flats. P-bass/old roundwounds = Good Times tone... not a Stingray as commonly believed!
I recall reading that he used a Tokai on a lot of recordings.
.....I think the first thing I am going to do is try some flats on my backup bass. The songs might not have been played on flats but I have never tried them before so as Beedster said I feel I owe it to myself to try some. If it does go some way to re-creating the sound then that is a bonus.
OldGit's post above mentions D'addario Chromes; I find they get a good tone for this type of music also. Not as thumpy & more pronounced mids (to my ears) than La Bellas - almost like an old set of round wounds with a bit of punch. Take ages to play in though! -
At the moment, dug out 'How to Operate with a Blown Mind' by Lo Fidelity Allstars....

My 80's Tokai Hardpuncher has got quite a slim fast neck. Though not jazz-like, it is totally opposite to my '62 RI, which makes me work a bit more, but I do like both. Another option could be an Ibanez Blazer; slimmer, faster & less chunky neck (IMO) than the usual P-Bass.

Can totally identify with this predicament, which is why I've managed to get my collection down from twelve to four basses over the last six months. The aim at the moment is to get eventually down to just two P-Basses ('62 RI & tokai) - one with flats & one with rounds. Keeping my Ibanez Roadstar for sentimental reasons. Must be an opposite to GAS(?) Realised that's all I need, & had enough of wasting time prior to gigs trying to decide which bass to take.... bit like my Mrs. spending ages deciding on what pair of shoes to wear on a night out.
The HR16 was ace! I had mine chipped which made it even better. The sounds were superb.
HR16 is a classic - wish I still had mine! I like my Zoom MRT-3, though think the SR-16 is equally good. -
To hell with it – I’ve really had enough

Please PM me if you're still interested. Cheers Nick

They're nice guitars & basses, I think comparable to good Fenders, but not cheap. Unless you're really set on having a JV, would recommend trying a few Tokais, Grecos, MIJ Fenders etc... too though.
Nick - did you see your Ibanez make an appearance on the last show?
Hi Mike, Yeah... in that Mondays clip at the beginning - sorted!

I like the best of both worlds, depends who I'm playing with. Always have my EQ fairly flat @ 12 o'clock. With one outfit I use flats strung P-Basses, tone rolled off a tad, with occaisional bit of compression. However with another set-up, I go for a Quarter Pounder loaded Franken-Jazz bass, fresh roundwounds, through a load of effects & quite often playing with a pick. Guess I've got the bass playing equivalent of dual personality disorder.
I believe the much vaunted original series Squier basses from the mid to late 80s had this. Really good basses.
A mate of mine has just got his '82 Fender Logo JV Squier strat back after 20 years. It's a lovely guitar & worth a bit.
......They were probably right to sack him or their whole future from Live Aid onwards would have been at risk.
And look like at what they became after he was gone! There are various differing rumours & reasons on why he was sacked on the internet....
If you want to be really annoyed, how about their poll for the "greatest bass player": http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio2/rocknrollband/bassists/ Shortlist: John Entwistle Flea Peter Hook Alex James John Paul Jones Lemmy Mani Paul McCartney Paul Simonon Tina Weymouth
Thought the programme was alright myself. Personally don't have a problem with that list either. All of them, bar two, have had some impact in one way or another on myself & I'm sure many other bassists, with regards to bass playing & approach to it. They have all, in their own way ; projected the bass to the forefront of their genre too. There are obvious ommissions like Jamerson,Jaco,Bootsy,Graham,Vicious etc... but this programme was aimed at the typical non-muso type person who probably never even thinks of what goes on in the lower register. If this programme goes in some way to make those people think about what we do & some recognition, then that's no bad thing surely? Myself, I'm looking forward to the release of this film, if/when the makers finish it. This is more like a proper bass documentary!
