1. I'm going to be awaybefore the deadline so I've slapped this together. I'm really not happy, as this has evolved so far from my original idea - i was going to get all angsty, but i feel i've had the stuffing knocked out of me this week. Oh, and Dad3353, this time i really should sack the drummer (and everyone else on this session!) https://soundcloud.com/julian-moss-511168525/acceptance-of-the-doom
2. This is off my blue U.S. Masters bass, recently replaced with a top-loading Hipshot one to match my slightly newer Masters bass. Possibly U.S. made as all the adjusting screws are imperial hex. Weight less than the brass Hipshot one of similar form, so may be aluminium, bright chromed. Used, but barely a mark on it. It has 5 screw mounting holes on 11/16 inch centres. This may be standard, I don't own any "standard" basses to compare! Mounting screws not included, postage is. Can't think of any trades I'd want atm. Cheers MBA Now SOLD to Jim Bartlett
3.
If times are hard then any string cleaning is better than none but I find the results don't last that long whatever you do. Boiling them tends to weaken them and they snap easily. I used to do it a lot when younger though but mainly because coming in around the 80s it was a slap fest and new strings worked best.
I don't agree that boiling weakens strings, I think it is the 're-stringing that does for them. When I had my Hohner Jack bass as my only bass, I boiled the strings multiple times, but being double ball ends, there is no flexing of the string, and I never broke a string in about 15 years. I had a very aggressive style then too.
4. Just had a good hassle free transaction with Inspector 71 (Gary), for a Hipshot bridge, good comms and super prompt delivery. Well chuffed! MBA
5.
Dunno mate, they all look the same........
Made oi larf!
6. Probably because there are more of those in the world than all the rest put together
7. Just listened to a track I'd never heard before (Pud Wud) and suddenly found tears streaming down my face. Sometimes, music acts on very deep emotions in the ol' brainium. Came as quite a surprise to me, and even more so to my wife sitting next to me.
8. I first saw him on Old Grey Whistle Test when they played a film clip with Soft Machine, which absolutely blew my mind as a young guitar player. I've previously posted his solo from In the Dead of Night off UKs first album as a favourite. The phrasing and note choices are just sublime, and you know no one else could have come up with that. I've chatted with him at a tiny free form jazz gig at Sussex Uni (79?), nice chap with no airs and graces. I've asked for Hazard Profile from Soft Machine Bundles to be played at my funeral.
9. A friend offered me his Sonar Platinum. Any love for that?
10. Have you actually tried them? It does have a whiff of something about it. I had a quick look at the website, not quite sure about the speaker claims as there isn't much real info, but one that caught my eye was a speaker with claimed 10 degree vertical dispersion, 120 deg horizontal, seems a little far fetched.
11. Just as a point of note, I'd make sure that the screw threads on the tuners are well lubricated, I used a copper grease. If it's anything like the Steinberger licenced ones on the Hohner Jack bass, they can get stiff and wear out eventually failing. I've fixed a few now using 4mm Helicoil type inserts into the sliders. These are stainless and will last forever. I'd consider doing this as a preventative measure, unless your bridge is very high quality like ABM where the sliders are brass.
12. I've just popped a link up on the Eggle forum. Hope that helps! MBA
13. That sounds like a poor piece of design. And a good way to tie users in to buying their valves only
14. I don't agree Janek's vids are unwatchable, even in the mundane ones there's still often a lot of useful and inspirational content, even if it isn't just bass related, work ethic, nutrition and exercise comes across too.
15.
My in depth review. Kasabian: 6-string 4000 shaped guitars look really silly.
I think those guitars are about the coolest Ricks you can get
16.
I quite like Joni, but as soon as she starts shooting up a vocal octave in random places, as she is wont to do, I switch off.
Lucky for you she doesn't do it on that tune! Phew!
17. Do you not use your R24 as a control surface? If you have and don't rate it, I'd be interested to know, as I may be doing that soon.
18.
Cheers! And you're right... The mix sounds much wonkier on small speakers than it did on my monitors - and it's worst at the beginning.
I get this a lot too, the mix sounds decent on the studio monitors, then you play it on something "inferior" like my home cinema system, and suddenly you hear some right howlers! I need to put some rubbish speakers up in my studio for mix checking, keep meaning to get round to it. Monitors and headphones doesn't cover all bases.
19. What a great snare sound!Nice playing all round.
20.
Prince said this was one of the albums he liked all the way through. I love it too but it gives me the strangest feeling when I listen to it. I wonder if Joni put any subliminal stuff on it?
It could be that the imagery is so strong it affects your noggin deeply. The lyrics and music are so deeply integrated, the whole effect is more powerful than the individual elements, and that somewhat transports the listener into the narrative. Or something.
21.
I started off with 1 line - "Death From Above", and a slightly Phrygian bassline. Then the guitarist from my newly formed band came round, we had a fiddle and somehow it became our eponymous debut song. As we don't have a singer, and our drummer was on his hols, all those bits are down to me (I have to do everything, me!). So I spose it counts as an entry to the compocompo as that was the initial inspiration! And can I just apologise to those who think there's rude words in it, there isn't though it's a touch suggestive if you can hear it. It's just my diction is poor! And I'll apologise to everyone else because of the racket... http://soundcloud.co.../16-choke-start
Great stuff as usual Leonard, got more than a little Primus vibe to that. The mix sounds a little wonky though, the guitar and drums aren't quite integrated with the vocals, or something. Just rambling, a bottle of Cloudy Bay to the good... hic!
