1. This is a 70's Japanese-made acoustic with a nasty ouch in the back. I'm looking to do a cheapish, quickish tidy up. My forearm doesnt fit right in the soundhole, so very tricky to push from the inside. I asked the owner and he'd be happy with me just cutting the part out and tidying the edges. Any other quick n dirty suggestions? (keep it clean please!) It looks like this one: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ANTORIA-FOLK-628-DREADNOUGHT-ACOUSTIC-GUITAR-1970s-/302286809698?nma=true&si=Qtahkv2mWuR9bt3RGpvMa3gYfNw%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557 Here's the damage:
2. Lovely gig in Paignton at the Spinning Wheel (376 mile round trip!) stayed nearby so could have quite a few drinks afterwards. The atmosphere was really friendly (big coach load down from Oxford) plus a private 40th party from upstairs, and a hen do later. We were one of 6 acts and I played with a drummer and guitarist for a 3 or 4 tune jam (I had about an hour's notice beforehand - cheers for that!) I got some really nice comments though: the drummer for the jam was having trouble articulating but said something like "I like playing with you, you're a, um, er, proper, er, bass player, I like your note choices", and a girl said "if I was going to play the bass, I'd like to play just like you!" Aw, shucks! Nice to get some ego stroking, my bandmates never say anything much...
3. Hofner violin basses are pretty light, as are the Verithin. Comes in handy playing long sets in the Star Club apparently.
4. Are we going to be treated to your monthly review roundup?
5. Good turnout. I'll have to set some time aside to remind myself of ones I've already heard. SoundCloud is not allowed at work
6. I guess the sort of folks that read this forum would be a lot of fixer uppers, who, like me, never throw anything away. I'm looking for a single machine head for a Strat, the squareish cast ones (not Kluson vintage-style) These have 2 locating pips next to each other and removable button with straight slotted screw and non-split shaft. I realize a photo would have been more use than a description, ain't hindsight a wonderful thing? I thought ebay would be full of this sort of thing, but apparently not BTW, this isn't begging, happy to pay! Cheers MBA
7. If I get time tomorrow night I'll try to do something more interesting for the tune, but I doubt I'll feel like it after a late night tonight in Paignton (gig) then driving back to Oxfordshire. Thanks for the kind words, I think it's so useless I was going to take it down to stop wasting everyone's time. At least there won't be anything much like it this month. With good reason!
8. The old Zoom 1266 can record 6 channels simultaneously. You can get a good working one for about £120.
9. I'm going to be awaybefore the deadline so I've slapped this together. I'm really not happy, as this has evolved so far from my original idea - i was going to get all angsty, but i feel i've had the stuffing knocked out of me this week. Oh, and Dad3353, this time i really should sack the drummer (and everyone else on this session!) https://soundcloud.com/julian-moss-511168525/acceptance-of-the-doom
10. This is off my blue U.S. Masters bass, recently replaced with a top-loading Hipshot one to match my slightly newer Masters bass. Possibly U.S. made as all the adjusting screws are imperial hex. Weight less than the brass Hipshot one of similar form, so may be aluminium, bright chromed. Used, but barely a mark on it. It has 5 screw mounting holes on 11/16 inch centres. This may be standard, I don't own any "standard" basses to compare! Mounting screws not included, postage is. Can't think of any trades I'd want atm. Cheers MBA Now SOLD to Jim Bartlett
11.
If times are hard then any string cleaning is better than none but I find the results don't last that long whatever you do. Boiling them tends to weaken them and they snap easily. I used to do it a lot when younger though but mainly because coming in around the 80s it was a slap fest and new strings worked best.
I don't agree that boiling weakens strings, I think it is the 're-stringing that does for them. When I had my Hohner Jack bass as my only bass, I boiled the strings multiple times, but being double ball ends, there is no flexing of the string, and I never broke a string in about 15 years. I had a very aggressive style then too.
12. Just had a good hassle free transaction with Inspector 71 (Gary), for a Hipshot bridge, good comms and super prompt delivery. Well chuffed! MBA
13.
Dunno mate, they all look the same........
Made oi larf!
14. Probably because there are more of those in the world than all the rest put together
15. Just listened to a track I'd never heard before (Pud Wud) and suddenly found tears streaming down my face. Sometimes, music acts on very deep emotions in the ol' brainium. Came as quite a surprise to me, and even more so to my wife sitting next to me.
16. I first saw him on Old Grey Whistle Test when they played a film clip with Soft Machine, which absolutely blew my mind as a young guitar player. I've previously posted his solo from In the Dead of Night off UKs first album as a favourite. The phrasing and note choices are just sublime, and you know no one else could have come up with that. I've chatted with him at a tiny free form jazz gig at Sussex Uni (79?), nice chap with no airs and graces. I've asked for Hazard Profile from Soft Machine Bundles to be played at my funeral.
17. A friend offered me his Sonar Platinum. Any love for that?
18. Have you actually tried them? It does have a whiff of something about it. I had a quick look at the website, not quite sure about the speaker claims as there isn't much real info, but one that caught my eye was a speaker with claimed 10 degree vertical dispersion, 120 deg horizontal, seems a little far fetched.
19. Just as a point of note, I'd make sure that the screw threads on the tuners are well lubricated, I used a copper grease. If it's anything like the Steinberger licenced ones on the Hohner Jack bass, they can get stiff and wear out eventually failing. I've fixed a few now using 4mm Helicoil type inserts into the sliders. These are stainless and will last forever. I'd consider doing this as a preventative measure, unless your bridge is very high quality like ABM where the sliders are brass.
20. I've just popped a link up on the Eggle forum. Hope that helps! MBA
21. That sounds like a poor piece of design. And a good way to tie users in to buying their valves only
22. I don't agree Janek's vids are unwatchable, even in the mundane ones there's still often a lot of useful and inspirational content, even if it isn't just bass related, work ethic, nutrition and exercise comes across too.
